The Neal, Chris, John, Brad iteration of the Cardinals was absolutely bonkers good. I doubt I’ll see and hear anything more magical on stage in my life. It’s honestly challenging to put into words. Hearing these stories and thinking how incredible “Two” sounds on record, and to think we’re listening to the first full take… wow. I wish I could listen to Brad and John tell more stories, even though they both sound a bit burnt by the way they were treated at times.
My first Ryan Adams show was at the Forum London in 2003 and his band were called the Killers. I saw the Cardinals every time they came to the UK and man, those shows were truly awesome, the best I've ever seen. Still my favourite band of all time. I met Neal briefly after a solo show in Nottingham UK 2013. He was so friendly and approachable, just a real pleasure to meet. An amazing musician and a lovely guy. We love you Neal.
Man, this brought up so many memories. I went to a Ryan & the Cards show in Wheeling when Ryan’s arm was broken, and that was the first night I ever met Neal. I would have appreciated his playing more if I hadn’t been so star struck at sweet Nealio. 😊 Miss my boy so much. ❤️
Maybe adding to the Neal lore: the first time I ever met Neal face to face was this Wheeling concert, and we formed a deep friendship that lasted until he passed away. Miss my dear friend so much. Life feels weird without him. 💔
I met him in Austin. He was walking around with his Leica prior to a CRB show. I was floored. One of those experiences where I wish I would’ve said 1,000 things but I just kinda said starstruck small talk “play it cool” shit. Anyway, Neal will absolutely be missed. I imagine the better part of us never knew how good we had it.
