Can the DF64 do better than my Eureka Mignon single-doser?
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
I wanted to create an updated video of my Eureka Mignon single-dose set up in anticipation of my new DF64's arrival. This video serves as the baseline on which I'll compare the DF64. I know that there's more to measuring a grinder besides grind retention, but my Mignon with the single-dose hopper and bellows is really good at low-retention grinds and also produces good fluffy grinds. I can't wa...

Hey how is your elizabeth holding up? any defaults or issues? I want to buy it but scared after reading about recalls recently from quality issues
??? where is the actually announced comparison??? ;-((( I see a more or less advertising like reel for accessories
What's the point of this video? Can the new grinder do better than my current one? Oh, by the way...I don't have the new one so I can't compare them, sowwy
nice little video, why did you stop making these?
Was there ever a follow up video?
Nope... got lazy. I'm not really a youtuber :) However, I will say that I haven't used my Mignon since I got my DF64. It's just much more convenient for switching between espresso and pour over. Also, the 64mm SSP burrs are pretty amazing at producing really good pour overs with high clarity. Something I was never able to do with the mignon.
@@rmanalan interesting. I am indecisive about buying my next grinder and keep going back and forth. Thanks for the opinion
Hello. I just ordered your hopper and bellow for my Mignon Notte/Manuale. I’m new to single dosing and learning aside from retention there is a concern about popcorning causing grind inconsistencies. Any experiences with that or too negligible? Also, does this hopper mod help with popcorning?
In my experience, popcorning issues are overblown. Basically, don't worry about it.
Was the specialita much more quiet compared to the df64?
but pla isn't food safe as I know.
Your etsy page says the hopper and bellows combo is out of stock. But each is individually in stock. Is there a difference between ordering them together, individually as compared to the combo option?
Sorry, that's a mistake. I only have a few bellows left (waiting for shipment from my manufacturer) and I need to make more hoppers. Everything will be restocked by Thursday next week.
So--now that you have the DF64 (I assume), how do you feel about the differences in the cup?
I've actually stopped using my Mignon. The DF64 is just way more consistent. Not as noticeable on espresso, but definitely for regular coffee... which actually I never used my Mignon for. The fact that I can do both with one grinder is a no-brainer for sticking with the DF64.
@@rmanalan Interesting! I have a DF64 but for some reason I still have a crush on the Eurekas, so I would love to be able to try one. But none are local to me..
Hi I have your products. Have you seen any changes in the burrs using a water spray bottle?
Nope
The hopper and the bellows exist for the Eureka ATOM?
It's difficult to tell even with headphones on, but it sounds like a break rotor may be warped and is contacting the pads. It's a high pitched sound. The creaks coming from my 2014 Ripley are not what that sounds like. I happens only when I'm climbing, and could be several things.
Where did you get the beautiful wood dosing collar with the special cutout?
www.etsy.com/listing/784403131/58mm-espresso-dosing-ring-portafilter
@@rmanalan Thank you.
IMS/VST basket or Lelit original delivered with your machine?
Hey great Video! Where you get your water spray bottle from? Greetings from germany
Not too worried abt retention. Consistency is more important.
Atom better than XL for consistency?
So where's your DF64 video? you never actually got one did you? Clickbait?
Lol ... No actually I've replaced my mignon with it 😂. Just haven't had time to create a video yet. Love the df64.
@@rmanalan Will you be making a bellows for the DF64?
>Can the DF64 do better than my Eureka Mignon single-doser? "I don't know." What's the point of this video then?
Aaaayyyy, you used my photo! Great video dude. What have you noticed from the tilt base? How much difference does it really make? I am VERY much looking forward to the DF64 comparison by the way… Been looking at that grinder myself
Ahhh .. thx for the photo. I should have add attributions.... Sorry about that. I like the df64... But mostly because it allows me to grind for pour over too. For espresso, I don't notice that big of a difference. From a retention standpoint, the mignon with the bellows seems to do better. To be fair, I don't adjust the grind dial much on the mignon while I do switch the df64 from espresso to pour over quite a bit... That might have something to do with it.
@@rmanalan That makes total sense. How about going from 50mm burrs to 64mm? Do you get a more consistent grind? There’re no issues with credit by the way man. I wasn’t bothered in the least. Just excited to see “myself” in your video is all
@@samburchard1778 yes, it's very consistent. I got the SSP unimodal (aka multipurpose) burrs. For pour overs it's really nice. My v60s are way more pronounced. For espresso, I don't notice much since I'm usually making milk drinks.
@@rmanalan I gotcha. I use my espresso for milk drinks most of the time too, so it doesn’t matter that much for me either. I have managed to pull some fantastic drink-on-their-own shots with the notte though, so I really don’t have any huge reasons to upgrade at the moment
im using same mignon, then bought different kind of blow up system online (3d printing) for single dosing. when i measure before after grind, the difference is almost zero retention. but upon opening the the grinder for cleaning, i saw many leftovers ground inside. so the best way to measure how good is the bellow is to do the grinder cleaning inside before measuring the coffee weight before and after. although i still believe the 3d print bellow is a great to help achieve closer to retention for any standard espresso grinder. it does improve my single dosing for frequent change of origin beans. i also see you using base to lean the grinder, does it help to improve zero retention? i was think to get one after see the new mignon.
Just got mine today, this thing is the real deal, thank you so much! How do you like your Lelit? I may be returning the Bezzera New Hobby I just got and get that one instead.
Love it. It's not a head-turner, but it does it's job really well.
I just wish there is cheaper way of shopping. I really wanna get the whole set but shipping to AUS from Etsy cost me half the price of the product. 😭
Did u ever consider marax? If so how did you ddcide on Elizabeth? I have a silvia now but find it super hard to dial in right... It's very finicky
I did consider the Mara X for awhile, but the features of the Elizabeth sold me in the end. No regrets.
Also, I don't want a machine that takes 20 to 30m to heat up.
Just ordered mine! Have you noticed any corrosion on your burrs when spritzing your beans before grinding? This is the only reason I’ve not used this technique yet.
I have not.
Hey!, Looking to print this for my Mignon Crono. Would it be the same fit or would I need to make some changes? This looks great and thank you for sharing the print file!
Same
@@rmanalan Thank You! Printing this today
What is the approximate wall thickness on your bellow? What infill are you using? My first print of a similar design was too stiff to press. Used 95a TPU
I use .7mm using 95a (Priline TPU).
@@rmanalan when printing mine, I get a great looking bellow but it is not flexible. Any suggestions on getting the side walls to be flexible?
@@pootklopp I'm guessing it has to do with your filament. I've tried several 95a TPU filaments and not all of them have the same flexibility.
what portafilter is this?
ECM clivecoffee.com/products/ecm-angled-bottomless-portafilter?ref=espresso-essentials
Rich - I got one of these SD’s off of your Etsy page but I’m having some issues with retention. I have about 1-1.5g retained in the grinder and I have to apply a lot of pressure to the bellows to get the remaining grounds out. Any suggestions/tips?
Mike... Try RDT.
@@rmanalan a friend of mine got me this from your Etsy store. I have the same problem with retention, what do you mean by RDT ? Not sure how disribution has to do with retention?
@@riffmeisterkl how long have you been using your grinder? Maybe it needs to be cleaned out? RDT === Ross droplet technique... Basically adding a drop or two of water to your beans before grinding eliminates static and generally helps reduce retention.
@@rmanalan my grinder is less than a month old only
@@riffmeisterkl also, what type of beans are you grinding? Light, med, dark... Oily? There are a bunch of variables that go into it.
Great! Is there a version for older Mignon?
You mean the Original Mignon (the one with the knob on the left side)? If so, yes. There's a drop-down field on the product page where you can specify the version of the Mignon you own.
Thanks a lot for sharing the STLs!
Really nice :) is the blower made of Soft TPU or Medium ?
Medium 95a
Mine is on its way :) how is grind consistency for you with this? I’ve found shots from my new mignon have been channelling like crazy without a hopper half full of beans.
WDT really helps with channeling issues. My grind consistency is the same with or without the bellows.
@@rmanalan my hopper and bellows arrived a couple of days ago and my goodness, they’re absolutely perfect. Thank you so much :)
I was religious about WDT before getting my Specialita. Those fluffy grounds so nicely deposited in the PF lulled me into false security, and w/out WDT I will still get some channeling. WDT, Level, soft tamp--(usually) never fails.
@@chrismonroe4855 with wdt, I don't find that leveling is necessary.
Hey Rich - unfortunately my bellows have now split! Do you sell them standalone?
Is that the crono? Any issues you notice with repeatability of grinds?
It's the Manuale. The bellows helps with consistency.
Well damn, I wish I had come across this two weeks ago before I designed my own for about the same cost! It works great, but yours looks so much nicer. Well done!
Getting ready to purchase from your store! What dosing funnel are you using? it seems to fit perfectly between the portafilter fork and the strange protrusion above the manual button.
I got it from Amazon: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K9R5WP7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The nice thing about this funnel is it has magnets on its base to help hold it in.
@@rmanalan That sounds fantastic, thank you for the prompt response. Just purchased the SD attachment from your store. Thank you!
Thanks @@rcksk8gtr! I'll get it shipped out to you in the morning.
Great, are you going to sell more?
Yes, I'll have more in the next few days
Is retention so bad on this grinder that bellows are needed to clear all the grounds for a single dose?
It depends on what you classify as bad. Out of the box, the grinder retains 1-2g on its own. I single-dosed for a long time without using a bellows and it was fine, however knowing that there are likely older grinds stuck in burrs made me want to try using a bellows. Now, I get .1-.2g retention.
@@rmanalan thanks! I was worried that the retention would be a deal breaker on this grinder. But it sounds like its not a huge issue.
@@imakeartwork Not at all. It's a great grinder.
Hey will this work with the eureka mignon specialita? thanks
Yes

Can you share data on the portafilter holder as well? Is it 3D printed plastic?
That's the original portafilter holder that came with my Mignon (Manuale). It's injection molded nylon or polypropylene, I think.
Any chance you'll make some in white?🤤
I actually tried it in a "stone" white this weekend. It looks great, but I don't have any white TPU to make the bellows. The black bellows on a white hopper doesn't look like a good match.
Gonna make any more?
Yes, I'll post about a dozen more by the end of this week. Keep an eye out on Etsy.

Perfect shot. I have just ordered my first expresso machine and it is exactly Elisabeth v3. I can’t wait to receive it. Can you please advice me if I must do something for the first time after unboxing? (I have found on youtube only 1 video where I’ve seen that I should install the waterfilter on the longer tube, fill the tank with water and program the PID). I am waiting for your advice. Thanks
Sounds like you've got it. After you do all of that, pull a shot, then enjoy it.
Hello. Are you happy about Lelit Elizabeth V3? I'm from México, how much did you pay for it and where did you buy it? Is a weak machine or robust? Thanks for your time. Good shot!
I love it. I got it from Clive Coffee.
Time to buy a new bike
Hey brother I would like your wisdom here... I'm buying the blue version of this bike what would you say are the pros and cons and how do I know what year it is. Reason I ask is bc the guy who's selling me the bike said is a 2017 but is similar to the 2015 version this one is carbon
sounds like a disc brakes touching the pads
Exactly! That doesn’t sound like a creak. Rotor is bent and rubbing the pads.
