Detroit 6-71 Startup

The start up of a late '70s Detroit. The signature sound of a 2 stroke Diesel.

After alot of work and clean up we were finally ready to start this baby
This was fantastic education and priceless.. thank you so much..😊
Amazing video. Thank you
Awesome startup!
How many megawatts?
I generally use contactor for those rated for continuous duty. I use starter relay for intermittent duty devices.
Why do most systems have a starter solenoid in the ignition circuit and on the starter itself? Shared load?
The solenoid on the starter motor physically thrusts the Bendix gear outward to mesh with the flywheel as long as the ignition switch is in the start position and retracts quickly once the engine starts.
Which would be best for battery isolation?
Probably why we have a tug that has to solenoid one for the starter the other for the engine and accessories and the one for the accessories gets hot to touch and run for few hours and turns off no start u put a new one it will get hot and stop working
👍👍
Very very helpful ! Thank you sir.
I have the same engine setup at work. I always start her up and let her idle at 750 or so for a minute or two then crank her wild. I know these engines can take the abuse but I try not to have it max rpm’s when I start.
Dude mixed the stater with continous 😅
Outstanding !!!!!!
Excellent! Great job!
Does it really matter if the battery power goes to the left side of the solenoid and not the right?
Had NO IDEA the ones that looked the same were different, this is WHY after I fried one of my mowers wiring I WON'T work on my other one, & I'm screwed because I'm 30 miles away from a shop in rural Florida and even the shops I contact WON'T even hand sketch me a basic starter / charge circuit diagram SMH
LOL , understand about 7 minutes into this, BET this is HOW I screwed my lawnmower wiring
I’ve always heard you NEVER Rev a cold diesel….
It's a generator, so it's probably set to go right to full RPM upon startup. Also it's a detroit so... oil schmoil 😁
it doent harm these 2 strokes, even the 850 rotax etec in skidoos need to warm up a bit.
So no warm up necessary on a cold start ????
Yes some 2 strokes can do that, even my 74 john deere JDX8 snowmobile i had as a kid with a CCW 440 wouldn't go worth a hoot until she warmed up a for 5 minuets. It would bog until she got warm! The Rotax 850 Etec likes to warm up a bit too!
Great video. You’d make a great Santa
❤❤❤❤
get to the point
0:15 having watched enough KT3406E I thought that thing was going to runaway lol
Me too lol
I’ve got a 12v version of the last solenoid… three terminals…the two main posts are each connected to two positive (one wire to one positive post. And the other to the other battery) battery posts (bass boat, with dual batteries)… the small terminal in front is connected to a single red wire, that I have not traced…. Can anyone tell me what I’m looking at? It’s old (1995 vintage) help! Thanks for any ideas…Kevin
One of the best methods of turning diesel fuel into noise. 😂
And your transvestite 4 stroke joke series 60 will do the same to
@@jlo13800 Awwh, little baby with his Scania came to make a joke.
Nothing like revving a cold engine to maximum RPM.
Silly
@@AmandaVanDenBergh-m2s Yeah my snowmobile wouldn't run right until warm.
Warm up , Nah !
Excellent video!
Why are you revving it up so high from a cold start?
That's a normal RPM for a 2-stroke Detroit diesel
I agree, worked on them for 8 years, that is not idle!
To answer your question correctly it's a generator. That's why it immediately went to full throttle.
As it's a 2-stroke there's twice the power impulses per revolution, so it sounds like it's going at double rpm
@@paulhorton5612 Yeah but it's not a low idle - it's running at rated rpm which, depending on the generator, could be 1500 or 1800 rpm or something similar. I'd say it sounds like 1800. In a vehicle application, a 71's usual range is 500 to 2100, same as four stroke engines like N series and 3406B

Hi Steve very interesting. I’m working on a 50’s vintage water cooled Kohler L650 generator. do you have any experience with these ?
Maaa eso es todo ni la gastada de diesel
The 71 series engines were 2 stroke. I had them in generator service. The regulation was superior.
Yep they respond fast.
First time here, and solenoids are above my pay grade. I thought they were things that rode on starter motors like a little space shuttle on top of a 747. Turns out that on my Econoline E150 van the solenoid is tucked in to the very front corner of the van, even farther out than the battery. Like they were trying to hide it or something. Nowhere near the starter motor, anyway. And now this video's got solenoids looking like other solenoids. Like they're trying to fool even the mechanics. Sheesh. I hope my mechanic knows what he's doing.
They are really easy. Just an electronic switch that can handle way more amps than a simple toggle switch.
Onan? Seriously? I'm not gonna say on line what the Bible says about the sin of Onan. I could make one joke too many. Okay, on to the next topic--is that a Boston accent I hear?
By the way is there a way to use a Ford solenoid on a Oldsmobile 1978 403 there is no room for the solenoid on top of the starter getting it in and out around the pipes is next to Impossible as one person. + my wires where cooked that guard and is useless the car has 46k then parked.
My friend had a well drilling rig. Great place for kids to play when no one was there to shoo them away ! Battery always dead ! I put a 12 volt constant duty "relay" that switched all control voltage in the truck . Iginition switch operated the "relay" so the entire electrical system was dead unless ignition switch was on .
hello there, I am in the right place. I have an old tractor that uses a 24 volt starter, the altenator/generatior is 12 volt. A series-parallel switch(solenoid) temporarily gives 24 volts for starter. That switch is burnt out. Can I use a 24063 spst to replace that switch?
This was very helpful. Thanks.
Working with these since the 70's, Luckily I never had to Deal with one that used the I for Ground that I Remember. Great info and Clear Explaning, Seems I had run across one in the Past where Mounting Plate was Isolated, and had a small push on Terminal for the Ground, Have you seen those? Or am I thinking something Else? Thanks
I love these old engines, they just sound so good and this engine also looks pretty cool.
hilary clintons 2300hp 433 CID 4 cylinder 2 stroke crankcase scavenged hydrogen engine
@@jlo13800 Interesting...
Its amazing how 2 strokes detroit come up so fast and run on so little oil. the cranks in there are ultra hardened and hardend than snowmobile cranks!
@@jlo13800 I actually didn't know those old Detroits ran on small amounts of oil.
Im 51 years old and thought I knew a little about this topic but you just schooled me and i will no longer listen to my fellow mechanics. Thank you for posting.
We're the same age and i thought i knew solenoids too..NOT!!..Lol
Wow! Incredible! They look exactly the same. That's the difference between a Technician and a parts replacer. Thank you Sir for passing us your awesome knowledge. Will you do a video on using a multi meter?
I have an RV that has a solenoid that isolates a charging circuit; Chassis battery & House batteries. These are known to go bad so I would like to have one on hand; what would be the best type to purchase that would last the longest? Thanks
Thank you!!
I thank you for your time and ease explaining the difference between the
I have been having electrical problems and this was one of the first things that I replaced; then diodes, more recently starter. I remember when I bought the solenoid the clerk "matched it up" but didn't use a multimeter. I still have the old one and will compare it. Excellent video, Thanks.
Thank you for posting this. Just what I needed to see!
Thanks you for doing this very informative!!
I watched this 5 times:)
NICE COMMENT !!! EXCELLENT VIDEO !!! I am not at 5 yet , but I am CERTAIN I will surpass that !!!
