My name is Nick and this is Mokuzai Design
Having retired I found that I missed working with wood. Strange (to non woodworkers) but true. So I have dusted off my apron, started to re purchase the tools that I sold when I finished work and have rented a small workshop unit.
I have decided to record my journey and share any woodworking skills that I may (or may not) have with you.
The aim of the channel will be to inspire, teach and be taught by my fellow (worldwide) woodworkers.
I will attempt to share woodworking tips, look at tools and review them together and offer a smattering of workshop banter.
If you are reading this you will already know that woodworking is not just a job or hobby, it's a vocation. Something all of us, at any level of experience share.
It's all in the name - Mokuzai Design. My partner came up with it. Mokuzai is Japanese for wood and is a nod to the superb wood craftspeople of Japan and Design because thats who I am.

Up cycling or flipping furniture can be rewarding and financially astute.
Here I paint a bureau secretary desk ready for sale. However, I end up keeping it. Restoring, up cycling and flipping furniture is essential to a woodworking business in my opinion because its easy to turn unwanted or cheap items into cash.
I use a paint sprayer to paint furniture but it can easily be done using a roller or paint brush.

The BEST Compressor and TOOLS for Woodworking

I've just purchased a Hyundai 50L air compressor and some tools for my woodworking workshop which raised the question... Do woodworkers need a compressor. Exciting Woodworking Workshop Update

setting up a new woodworking workshop is a bit of a passion project for many. After all it is a place we spend a lot of time and need it to be comfortable and pleasing as well as an efficient work space. The difficulty that I have found is two fold. The amount of workshop floor space and the amount of work coming in that needs to be completed. So with this in mind I have increased my workshop f...

Lie Nielson Block Plane - because I've always wanted one.

I've purchased a Lie Nielson block plane for no other reason than I've always wanted one. Is the plane worth the price tag. Only you can decide on that but I will tell you that I'm not disappointed with mine. I started with the block plane because it was at the cheaper end of the Lie Neilson range of planes. If I were going to make a mistake I didn't want to go all in. Now I'm considering other...

Nick, what paint are you using and what is the reason for using the Polyvine ? Please use a proper spray mask.
I realize there may be variances in filming techniques, but it appears to be blotching from the application process. If so, would you recommend a sanding sealer before applying the stains?
The lighting in the workshop doesn’t show it as well as in real life and I was being overly frugal with the dye. Having said that… I would use a sealer on soft woods. Using them on hard woods I have had much better results.
You look kinda like Michael Keaton
Is that good or bad?
@@MokuzaiDesign well Michael Keaton was batman, so good? Lol
Batman… I’ll take that 😂
Dark green?
Good shout .. I’ll mention it to my partner. Although I think she wants to go cream. I voted black but I don’t think I’ll win
I think Matt Black would look the part.
Me too.
Gold
I like Black but my partner likes gold or cream. The chances of getting my choice is slim
Black
That’s my vote… partner is now suggesting cream. This may take longer than the job 🤷🏻♂️
Nice work, Nick 👍
Thank you. That’s much appreciated
That looks very professional Nick! good job :)
Thank you
Oooh, new shiny fings , got to love new stuff. ... Happy Birthday as well matey !
Yes.. don’t you just love new stuff.
Yeh, everyone whinges about “Health and Safety gone mad” but I remember the changes on building sites and factories from the 70’s onwards. The number of lathe operators on piecework (my dads old mates) minus multiple fingers etc, and the number of roofers killed/crippled from falling off cat ladders ( hence everything needing scaffolding now) use your PPE1 😃👍
You're right Loz and most of the time I'm good at using the correct ppe mainly because I'm rather fond of my bits and bobs. Even if my bits and bobs aren't up to much.
@@MokuzaiDesign Have to say I'm impressed with the level of dust extraction the Festool tools have designed in...
Yes it’s pretty damn good. I can’t deny the quality of their tools but wish they were more affordable
As promised a little update on how the box was received. The lady who the box was made for cried. I’m hoping in a happy way. Apparently it was just as she remembered the original but was different enough to make it unique to her.
I love that you did this on pine. My first few pieces I built I had no idea about staining pine and just how BAD it looks with most stains. Those are excellent and be able to see ALL the colors was very helpful! Thank you for that!
I’ve since used them on oak and apple sapele projects and they are excellent.
Hi Nick, I'm here at the recommendation of Loz from Grumpa's Workshop. I've just watched several of your vids and I do like your content and style. Thanks to Loz for the tip and I have just subbed to your channel, regards, Fred
Thank you Fred. Great to have you here.
My own shop has grown incrementally and organically. My best advice would be to draw up an ideal shop with everything you could hope to have and then build one thing at a time, as needed, but in accordance with the overall plan. You'll still have to adjust things as you go but having the perfected image already drawn up will help guide the smaller decisions. Best of luck. I like your presentation.
You’re right, organically is the way to go. It will be a slow process though because I always seem to have a lot of projects on the go. I like the idea of drawing a plan to work towards

That’s great news Nick! I wish I was there to give you a hand. Next time I can help you with filming ❤ so you have more 🎥 angles
Thank you
Great video Nick, I really enjoyed it. I’ve not see a workshop in a storage place. Golf and woodworking…. Sounds a great retirement.
You’ve not seen my golf. I’d not seen it before either and was thrilled when I found it. I took the last unit, it was all full a week after opening. I wanted one of the bigger units but I’m not sure if one will come up soon.
Measure once, cut twice, then damage it in with a hammer!
That sounds right 😂 I just tell myself that if you don’t make mistakes you don’t make anything.
CORRECTION I said in the video that on the back of the tape measure it was marked in inches. This is not correct. It is in fact a scale that takes in Pi to calculate diameter. I’ve not used this function. I apologise to anyone hoping to have this measure inches.
I like the Hultafors tape measure (I have one), but the bottom of the tape is not inches. I don't know what it is, but it's most definitely not in inches.
I hadn’t noticed before but you are right. I’ll pin a comment to correct this. Thanks ever so much for pointing this out, I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.
I’m also old enough to have been brought up on imperial measurements and even remember when money wasn’t decimal! 😂 I’m a fan of those Talmeter tape measures too although my everyday go to is the Fastcap one which has a pencil sharpener built in. Good work on the video. Lots of good information 👍
Ahhh decimal money. I made a fortune for a while. My gran used to give me a shilling pocket money. When we swapped to decimal that would have technically been 5p. But she continued giving me 12p. This was ruined when my father explained the new system.
@@MokuzaiDesign 😂
NIck, @berrysmith1954 and @MokuzaDesigh are both spot-on! I heard about the metric system in Jr. High school the schools in the 1950s didn't teach it. My father was mechanical engineer, I grew up with the Imperial measuring system. Never thought I would need metrics until I became a Porches mechanic in the mid-80s. It's so much simpler so it required very little time to become "bi-lingual". Thanks for the video!
I think the hardest part of imperial for me now would be adding together multiple fractions. I didn’t find it hard as a kid… but now ???
Hi Nick, I enjoyed the video and it's good to hear someone talk about measurement the same way as I think: drive in miles measure in inches. Though I remember my dad combining the two "2 foot 5mm" was a measurement he gave me once. Just a suggestion, it would be good if you had a second camera/phone for close ups to give us a better view of what you are doing sometimes. I like your style so have subscribed.. Keep up the good work
It made me laugh about your dad combining the two form of measurement. You are right about the cameras and that is happening soon. I have been restricted by space a bit but that is changing next week so will have more room to play with. Thanks for the subscription. The filming will get better.
Nick you are spot on with your acessment of imperial verses millemeters. I was born in the US and the school system never mentioned metric measurements ( I was born in 1954). With all that being said my father was a watchmake and jewler, and later a gemlogist.... he was a fluent metric system user in his trade and I learned it from him. As you say it is a no brainer, much simpler! My work was in the space of Ophthalmology, Optometrist-Oculist and metric is all we used.
That’s strange, because very few people can say their father was a watchmaker. You and I can. My father’s main business was as a watchmaker. He was also a fine woodworker. I started watchmaking but my heart was with wood.
I loved the plot twist of this video Nick, you “nailed it” 😊
👍
Same block plane as I have. It's a wee beauty!
It really is. The more I use it, the more I love it.
Lovely bench Nick and a great series of videos on this build, the detail you go into with the little tricks here and there are great for a newbie woodworker like me. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of the content you put out.
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed it. Always good to connect with fellow woodworkers. I’ve been working with wood for years but find that I learn so much from RUclips, including your channel. Never too old (in my case) to learn.
I've been into woodworking all my working life. It never gets boring. Started my business redsworkshopuk in 2022 and have never looked back.
Good luck with everything. It’s wonderful to know that you’ve never looked back..
Bought one a couple years ago. It is one of my favorite tools
I’ve been using it since making the video and I’m very very happy with it.
I love mine. It's a beautiful little plane, and super handy.
Can’t agree more. I’ve been using it since making the video and I’m thrilled with it.
A carpenter I worked for in the French alps bought an expensive block plane similar to the lie neilsen, the difference between using his and my old record blocker (which I still use for work now) was night and day and really made me appreciate the quality of those tools, I will definitely invest now I have my own workshop, best wishes
I’ve been using it since making video and it is superb. But as I said.. I’m in my own workshop now so I know it will be looked after. So although expensive it’s a life time purchase.
This comment is mostly for the algorithm. I hope to someday be good enough with hand tools to warrant a set of nice chisels
Well thank you. It’s appreciated. Buy one good chisel and practice… it won’t be long before you’re adding to your hand tool collection. I know that I still take time out to work on technique because I like learning.
Do you feel it’s incorrect to go back and forth using the roller jig? Is that why you only go one direction? Thanks
@@ericerf6837 you only want to push the cutting edge into the grinding surface to cut from front to rear so that as the front gets thinner, it will form a burr that can be seen and felt on the back of the chisel. Once you have raised a burr, then you can go up in grit or move to a strop to finish the edge and remove the burr
@@ericerf6837 outdoor55 is the hands down best on RUclips for teaching sharpening. Check out his channel
Some people go back and forth when using a stone but on the scary system it is likely that you tear the paper as you push the cutting edge forward. For me, I always draw back (including on the stone)and leave the burr intact until the end. The reason for this is as you go through the grits the bit of the burr holding it onto the edge gets thinner and thinner, making it easier and cleaner to remove on the strop as the last part of the process.
A man should always treat themselves, regardless of what it is and especially in retirement ... a simple, nice video that i am sure many a bloke gets.
Luckily my partner agrees with you.
@@MokuzaiDesign I'm glad you whispered that, my Wife is lurking 🤣
Really nice bench! Do you have plans for sale? I would love to buy a copy.
Thank you. I’m afraid I don’t… I may do something about that in the future.
@@MokuzaiDesign no bother. Thanks
Have been looking at getting a honing guide for some time now,but what one to get? There are so many on the market. Then I just stumbled on to your video. Just the right information for me and narrowed things down a lot for me. Great video and you got a new subscriber.👍
Thank you. I had the same issue. Looked around for ages and wasted some money on cheap versions. I know this isn’t cheap but I console myself with the fact that it’s a lifetime purchase and it does exactly what it’s supposed to.
@@MokuzaiDesign then it's worth it's money? Here in Germany it costs €180
I just google exchange rate and I paid equivalent of 153 euros. I still think it’s worth 180
@@MokuzaiDesign ok thanks. That's it in my shopping basket now. Keep up the good work.
I bought a set Narex Richter, looking forward to dressing them before i use them.
I’ve been using them since making the video to see how they perform… I think you are going to be very happy with them… I am.
Remember that I'm not Elon Musk, these are just some thoughts on starting a woodworking business.
Good luck for the future
Thank you, it’s appreciated.
If you’re making joints that tenons are appropriate, the domino is a smart choice for a business where time is money/profit/overhead. As a hobbyist, I got the dowelmax system because it fits my needs.
I think you’re right.. if it fits your needs it’s perfect
at least with the kapex you can sell it for nearly what you paid for it, and upgrade. i got the 60 because its more portable than the 120, i agree its great but has its size limitations.
Yes it is more portable… I don’t have to move mine, so as you said, it would be just for the extra capacity
3:45 if you do get a second bandsaw that is larger, you can put a resale blade on the big one and put a thin detail blade on the smaller one. I only have an old cheap bandsaw that I bought secondhand, but that’s what I will likely do in the future.
The blade on mine is tiny so I would keep it… will get a bigger one later on when finances allow
@@MokuzaiDesign resaw is what that should have said
I got into woodworking when my better half died just over 3 years ago and needed something to keep me busy. Bought a 20' x 7' shed/workshop, some cheaper power tools/hand tools and started with chopping boards for the family. Always loved wood from my school days 55+years ago but ended up in mechanical engineering. Love it.
Chopping boards is a great way to get back into it. Sounds like a good size shed… bet you will have some good times in there.
Saw you comment on the other guys video and decided to follow you too. Good luck on your RUclips journey
Thank you… hope you enjoy it as I get better at the filming.
Domino is portable and much more flexible than traditional tabletop mortisemachine. Never regretted buying the domino if not only for the space saving
I’ve certainly not regretted buying mine. Accurate and easy to use.
Like you, I also regretted buying smaller, less expensive tools. I learned over time that better tools make woodworking so much more enjoyable. "Buy once, Cry once" - as they say. Thanks for making this video.
Its true, you get what you pay for. Had I planned ahead I would not have that drill press. We live and learn
That's why I've been buying Festool and Laguna. I've replaced too many inferior tools. I don't want to do it again. Yes, bigger is better but there is a sweet spot, too. I had a Bosch sliding compound miter saw and replaced it with a Kapex-120, mainly because the Bosch took way too much space. The Kapex is a great tool. I recently used it for some dados for cross supports. they came out perfectly.
I like the line “sweet spot” you are so right.
ur regrets are fascinating old man, i came here expecting some cheap stuff and u went I should've bought a bigger one
I mentioned it because of the work that I do.
I like the bit about Barbara
Not sure she would 😂
That Sapele looks stunning. The chamfer also came out beautifully. Nice work and great video. Appreciate the mention. And I could not agree more with your statement about negative and positive people.
