Quill Hotspot Nymph - Jig Nymph - Fly Tying with John Murphy
The Quill Hotspot Nymph.
A fantastic year round nymph pattern to target both trout and grayling. You can add your own spin to this pattern too with different coloured hotspots or different quill bodies. This pattern is great used as either a point fly or dropper on a euro nymph leader, or fished as part of a dry dropper rig (Klink and dink)
I also tie this pattern on a traditional wet fly hook with normal copper beads making it a lighter nymph.
I hope you enjoy watching, and you’ll get a few tied up in your box. As ever please let me know how they work out for you.
Tight lines.

Pepping Caddis Nymph - Jig Nymph - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Просмотров 307Месяц назад
The Peeping Caddis is a nymph pattern that has been around for some time now, and with good reason. This is an extremely effective pattern that can be used to target both trout and grayling. This is a pattern that I’ve been using for a number of years now. It’s changed slightly from the original over time, with the removal of the partridge hackle to be replaced with natural CDC. I also original...
Infected Shrimp (Hotspot Shrimp) - Czech Nymph - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Просмотров 3612 месяца назад
So it’s been a while since I last uploaded a fly tying tutorial. However, I’m back, and will be uploading videos on a weekly basis. I thought I would start things with a pattern I’ve been using for a number of years now, and has accounted for a number of Grayling so far this season for myself. This pattern is tied to represent an infected fresh water shrimp. The shrimp become infected with a pa...
Montana Pheasant Tail Nymph - Stillwater and Reservoir Nymphs - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Просмотров 425Год назад
Here we have a great pattern to be used on Stillwater and Reservoirs. Black and Green has always been a fantastic colour combination to use, and many great patterns over the years have been tied around this. The Montana Nymph is one of those, so this Pheasant Tail Nymph has been loosely based on that pattern. A great nymph to be fished as part of a washing line, or straight lined. I hope you en...
Scruffy Olive Nymph (The ultimate Olive nymph) - Jig Nymph - Fly Tying with John Murphy

The Scuffy Olive Nymph. The ultimate Olive nymph to have in your box. This super simple pattern to tie will catch both trout and grayling year round. A fantastic pattern to use in conjunction with the foam post Klinkhammer. Get a few in the box and let me know how they perform for you. Foam Post Duo Klinkhammer - Dry Flies - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Просмотров 3 тыс.Год назад
My take on a Klinkhammer pattern developed more for to use in the Duo method. With a hi-viz foam post, sighting the fly on the river is made much more easy. It also helps aid the fly in floating when fishing faster sections of the river. Finally a mono tag is tied at the rear of the fly to easily attach a length of tippet to fish a nymph bellow. I tie these in a range of colours including; blac...
Black and Peacock Spider - Soft Hackle Wet Fly - Fly Tying with John Murphy

My variation on the classic Black and Peacock Spider. As the original, but with the added bonus of a UTC Opal rib. A great pattern to get tied up and will catch fish both on the River and Stillwater/Reservoirs. Euro Jig Streamer - Streamer and Lure - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Просмотров 486Год назад
My take on a Euro Jig Streamer. This pattern has all the keys components to make it super effective when out on the water. This can also be tied on a size 10 or 8 and used for Stillwater and Reservoir fishing. When used as a Euro Jig Streamer you can drop it into likely looking drifts and holes to tempt any resident trout. Takes can be savage and they are a great pattern to carry year round, be...
Pink Tag Frenchie Pheasant Tail Nymph - Jig Nymph - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Просмотров 355Год назад
We’re back! So it may have been a while since my last upload, but here we are, back behind the vice making a tutorial for a Pink Tag Frenchie. This pattern is an absolute magnet for targeting Grayling during the Autumn and Winter months. Tied in a 12 with a 4mm tungsten bead make it a great point fly, or smaller options for a dropper fly. Don’t forget to experiment with the tail options and the...
Small Stream Tributary Wild Brown Trout - Fishing With John Murphy
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
Welcome to the first of my fly fishing videos. After being inspired by a number of good friends to get this done, here it is! Filmed on my IPhone 14 Pro and DJI Mini 2. I still have plenty to learn, but I had good fun creating this. Hopefully you enjoy watching. Small stream fishing for small wild brown trout is something I find highly addictive. The ability to outwit a small wild fish doesn’t ...

Hi-Viz Griffiths’s Gnat - Dry Flies - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
Here is my little spin on the famous Griffith’s Gnat Dry Fly. A must for any angler, this pattern produces fish time and time again. When fish are feeding on small Gnats they can’t resist these. The Hi-Viz post helps track the fly on the water, whist the thread rib offers a little more durability. I find having a hackle a little longer allows the fly to skate on the surface with a more natural ...
Orange Tag CDC Nymph (Hare & Squirrel) - Jig Nymph - Fly Tying With John Murphy
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
The perfect jig nymph to bring a trout or two into the net. This fairly simple patterns has all that’s needed to attract trout. A bright tag, movement from the CDC and a natural blend of dubbing with a little flash thanks to the UV blend. Personally I fish these in 14’s and 16’s the majority of the time. However a 12 with 4mm Tungsten can help in a high river. Give them a tie, get a few in your...

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes 8lb would be fine. I used 10lb as it’s just slightly stiffer when adding and removing your section of tippet for the nymph.

Crickey, a lot of materials and a complicated tie, but a great idea and it gives me some really good options for other flies such as a suspended FAB

Sorry for the delay in responding. Typically I use lighter nymphs under the due method. So around the 3 - 3.5mm is comfortable. If I need to go any heavier then I will use an indicator. 👍🏻

Great fly, really good quality video which isn’t always present in these videos. One suggestion would be to try to suppress the tool noise after each step. Perhaps use a padded mat or towel. It makes listening much easier especially if you’re wearing a headset!! 👍
