No, no effects, I promise lol so I've wondered the same thing. Why lightning that close still takes time to make a boom( Bc by the flash to bang ratio it should have happened way sooner) Trust me, it messes with your mind way more in person. But basically, to answer your question without making this reply more of a novel, then it already is. Basically, it takes time for the insane heat from lightning to heat the air and vaporize some stuff, thus like exploding it. So hypothetically, there is gonna be a delay no matter what and prob some ratio of heat to the mass of the air and stuff maybe could calculate how long a certain strike would take to register a sound then add the speed of sound relative to distance, but 99 percent of the time, when we are far enough, we don't notice bc we just assume it took time to reach. But when super close, our minds almost expect the bang sooner. Hope this helps!

@@MesoHunterYT haha this is one of the least expected replies, thanks. This puzzled me because I think it happened to me too, although indirectly, while in the kitchen. I knew the lightning storm was getting closer since the sound took less and less time to arrive after the flash. Eventually, I heard something like the cables on the electric just outside short circuited and saw a flash, then 500milliseconds after I heard thunder. I've always wondered if it was actually lightning striking something, but dismissed it for the same reason in my comment. I'd still like to see one in person to prove to myself once and for all, though 🤣 as dangerous as that is

Oh wow! Joplin to Mississippi is quite a jump, but I must admit both are epic in their own right. Some of my fav chasing is in Mississippi. I know the terrain is difficult, but I just love how lush it is. I'm originally from NY, so I'm used to trees 😆
