You can do this experiment at home. Fill an empty aquarium tank with water. Carefully pour cane sugar into the tank from the top. Do not stir the water, and let it sit for at least a few hours. The sugar will slowly dissolve into the water, creating a gradient of sugar concentration-higher at the bottom and decreasing as you go up. This gradient also creates a gradient in the index of refraction, which causes a laser beam to bend.
