RIP Alan Raph😢
Such a great teacher. RIP, Alan. He will be missed.
That lead trumpet YIKES !
I can't think of one comment to make.
Very cool to see someone who I consider a classical trombone have such a developed doodle tongue and basic concept of how to develop all of the various multiple tonguing techniques. I guess many musicians of this generation often were able to play both classical and jazz/commercial styles at a high level.
Wonderful!!! 😎
Saw this man sit in a brass ensemble rehearsal and play a 2nd trumpet part...NO LIE!!! 🙁
Man that’s awesome..I will practice
Why can’t composers just avoid a low B natural on trombones? Give it to another instrument.
The music should come first. Then the instrument improvements.
Is that a conn 88hcl with a king counterweight? Because damn, it looks cool.
It is ... it plays pretty good also.
@@alanraph9433 nice! If it’s plays good, should I give it a try? I also have a conn 88hcl and a Yamaha counterweight on my beater trombone.
Recawded....U da best Raph!
Alan, are you still alive? -sincerely, me
my uncle played in dance bands in the 50s , became my teacher and later senior high band director and taught me to this in the late 60s as he did all of his trombone students. but he taught me a bit different.... as you put a tiny bit of cold cream on your finger tips ... work it in your fingers tips like a woman would do before applying make up . then work it up and down the slide ... it is an art,,. you have to work at it some to get it work . but when applying water you can use just tap water but put it in a spray bottle that sprays a wide area ... this works the best from what I have learned... i just finished up doing this tonight .... got back into trombone .. just my thoughts on this
Thank you.
Hi Alan - When you say, "playing staccato on the trombone requires USING the word "top". I'm assuming that you mean to THINK the word "top" when executing staccato tonguing. As it isn't really possible to tongue/make the "p" sound in the word "top" while playing notes. The lips would have to be apart to create the "p" sound, which isn't possible when you're playing the horn.
You need to close the note with a consonant (top or tot) rather than simply giving it a burst of air (ta)
Hi Alan - I understand and like your "tot" approach to playing staccato. However, I'm still not convinced how one can possibly use the TONGUE to create the "p" in the word "top" while playing. One can THINK the word "top" when playing staccato but, and I repeat again, it is not physically possible to create the "p" sound without separating one's lips.
0:57 so that’s the word for the thing I’ve been doing
When playing high notes, is it bad to do the opposite? (Moving your upper lip down?)
That's not the 'opposite' but no matter. Whatever works.
Alan Raph, your interviews are fascinating!🎶 Your Dad, Ted Raph and my Grandpa Bob Effros composed “Get Away Jitterbug” and “Parade of The Clams”. Will contact you. My email is EffrosMusic@gmail.com
Do you shift in the very low register?
Yes … from pedal F downward.
That is a Getzen o a bach bass trumpet
To get a bigger pedal sound about f# and lower, I do the opposite and lower the mouthpiece, wich is what Ive found comfortable. Is this ok, or should I do it the other way?
Go for it … if it works for you.
So would the legato be the tenuto accent
It would generally be a slur
@@alanraph9433 thanks for answering I have some trouble with my lips quivering while I play which ruins the whole tone quality and I don't know how to prevent it and how would I play a accent like the less than symbol
Your low notes have a nice pillowy brightness. And i like your vibrato.
Uh . . . Lemme go get a pencil.
noice job
Good, fat, bass trombone sound; very sonorous!
Sir, when you put water on it wouldn't make the slide oxidate?
The difference between a trombonist and a contortionist? A contortionist knows more than seven positions.
Pedal tones just sound like farts. Leave those notes to the tuba
I'm watching 10 years later
I play tenor trombone and I can get down to 2nd F under staff
Single rotor trombones: cannot play a low B
We got pedal b
Fake it. Use bottom of the staff B position and drop it an octave like you’re pedaling
YEAH JED! =) GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!!! <3
Fabulous. My kind of trombone playing and band arrangement.
You do realize that tenor trombones with f attachments can get all these notes as well?
Svensk Gamer DUDE, do you know who this is?😂 Of course he knows.
Coleton Solari But he acts like he doesn't. Just saying. I even have his book.
You do realize that tenor trombones with f attachments can get all these notes as well?
how? I'm a bass and tenor trombone player and I can't play C unless my tuning slide and trigger slide are pulled almost all the way out and I'm still in 7th and B for me is impossible unless played as a pedal tone
Hmm. I'm able to play all the notes just fine. Fellow bass and tenor player.
I think if everyone could play those notes just fine then there'd be no point to a double trigger bass
as with some others here,.. all this time I thought I was just cheating by doing what You suggested for volume on those lower notes!! thanx muchly!
Very helpful and lucid explanation. Thank you!
This is a bit random, but you do love King horns, don't you? Because you have a King tenor and a King bass that I've seen in videos. Which one is this? I didn't know King had an open wrap tenor that they made....
Its a Conn 88H with a King counter weight
Oh that makes sense. Is your Bass Trombone a King then? Or a Bach or something else?
King Duo Gravis
Thank you. I have your melodious etudes for trombone book and it has helped me tremendously!
Thanks..I've heard some of your RUclips solos. You play well.
thanks for this
what model trombone is that
King Duo Gravis Silversonic
you should make more RUclips videos
So I have to play a sforzando pedal Bb as loud as I can for this piece and hold it, but I cannot seem to get a good attack. How does one position their tongue when heavily articulating pedal notes? Thank you
Drop the jaw, open the mouth and if the tongue wants to attack between the lips let it. You also might want to try the low tone exercise on the pedal Bb.
Jason Raph thanks man that helped a lot! Now I just gotta practice consistency and put like 200 more gallons of air...
I get the whole concept of focus, but sometimes I find I'm paralyzed by too much analysis. In this situation, would it be better to maybe watch some RUclips while doing this exercise to try to get it to feel more second nature?
How to tongue so fast? I would like to know...
You need to double tounge or triple tounge. There are many videos out there that teach you to do so
Lol, Just flutter
@@charleyhibschweiler4555 yeah obviously
Colin Joseph you realize that comment was made a year ago right?
Did anyone else get spooked when he hit the camera with his slide at 0:42??? 😂😂
0:14 he's trying to hypnotize me!
I play triangle
the highest I can play is high g :(
work on it with your teacher or ask other players how they do it.
erm... the second part you dint show...
