Working around the Waves Update plan - waves central overview
If you've ever noticed the fact that waves have some form of sale on for 365 days of the year you'll also probably know that whenever you buy a cheap plugin, you get support and updates to that plugin for a year after purchase. After that point waves want you to update your plugin and thye have a tendency of updating their Waves Central software annually to ensure that if you don't take steps you could end up forking out an additional couple of hundred quid for the pleasure of re-installing the software.
When making this video, to bring all my outdated plugins up to the most current version, it would cost me $240 for another year of updates. IN this video I talk about how I install offlin...

      I’ll do a video on it but I’m undecided as there are a tonne of things I’m missing that I took for granted in pro tools. In pro tools, I like the implementation of audio suite, it’s a great tool for auto tune simple slow downs, reverse reverbs and also the implementation of ARA is strong and another thing I’d miss. What surprised me the most is that there were times I’d like to reach for the stock plugins (channel strip, heat, pro comp, space, pro limiter and maxim) and whilst the plugs in Luna are excellent they haven’t really got a set of utility plugins. Luna is a new daw in comparison and I have no doubt a tonne of the features will get there. I want to do another few videos on Luna. Just waiting on the m4 to come out

    Great information! Quick question: If I have a bundle (V9) and "upgrade" to the same bundle (V15), does it upgrade the whole bundle to the latest version or only the plugins that were added to the bundle after V9? If this works, it seems it's a cheaper solution than using the Waves Update Plan.

    • @JonConStudio
      @JonConStudio 2 месяца назад

      In theory it should upgrade the entire bundle as you’d likely be authorised for the V15s of that bundle. After that make sure you download an offline installer.

    For anyone watching, this stream was really a trial for me to try luna, there are a few instances where I forgot to unmute my mic after playback. I was looking for something to duck this for me. Let me know your thoughts. Personally as a first proper run through for mixing I was pretty impressed. I like having the A800 as an extension but I'm not really using any of the other extensions in Luna. I could see myself using this more often in the future

      In the top right above the scoll wheel indication, you need to enable the “AZ” box. If its grey’d out click it and it should turn yellow, thats how you know its enabled. This will change your overall work flow and will remove the need for you to press command before using shortcuts.

    Sorry Jon, I forgot to mention ... I'm trying to use the sigma writing all the automation on 1 track in Pro Tools. I just don't know how to edit any level/volume changes while using only 1 track? Is it possible to use the sigma control 16 plugin with 16 tracks in Pro Tools? Ugh.., haha :) THANK YOU for your time Jon! Be safe... a

      Hey sorry for missing, you can definitely automate all channels on the Delta 16 in pro tools if you're using the lanes. You need to make sure the volume setting allow for the read and write of automation settings in the plugin. As far as HUI goes control Delta plugins seem to have a issue communicating with SSL360 in this sense

    Hi Jon, I hope I'm not disturbing you. I've watched this clip over and over trying to get as much insight as possible. You do a GREAT job!! I'm just wondering Jon, is it possible to do 'offline' volume changes in the sigma? In normal mix automation mode one can normally attenuate the level of certain section/tracks up/down incrementally in decibels… i've tried to research it, but haven't been able to find an answer? For instance… If I wanted to boost a vocal after hardware compression for three words, is there a way to move the sigma fader post processing for those few words without risking, ruining the automation on that track before and after the off-line edit by having to do it on the fly? It would be great to punch in the start and end point of where you want the vocal attenuated. Thank you for your help.! Keep up the great work! I know you're probably busy… But I'd love to see more ... haha :) Bye for now ... a

    • @JonConStudio
      @JonConStudio 4 месяца назад

      For sigma what would usually happen is that this box would usually go AFTER any hardware compression so any volume changes wouldn't impact the compressor anyway. Because of the nature of hardware workflows, hybrid mixing and what have you, you can't really do offline mixing as the audio needs to pass though the hardware to have an effect. If you ran the audio through at 5x/10x the speed it would have an impact on any hardware compressors or time based effects you had on your system. The other issue would also be the difficulty with conversion as you'd have to have an insane varispeed setup to be able to capture the sample rate and the new speed. When I need to make changes to mixes I've done previously, what I'll normally do is have the channel I'm recording the mix set to punch, duplicate the playlist of the previous mix just record the section I'm changing. I'll then do a cross fade of the specific area I'm changing. Yeah I'd love to do more, been in flux for the last few years, have planned to do more videos but not been in a position to shoot more videos, hoping for that to change over the next few months.

    • @JonConStudio

      Hey, it’s an interesting point, Probably because adding sends would likely increase/double the cost. How do you control the sends? Are they additional MDACS ? If so you’re going to be doubling the amounts needed. In this case you might be better incorporating sigma into something like the origin, an asp8024 or a Neve (should the budget allow for it)

    Hi Jon! I love the content. I've just added a Sigma to my setup, replacing my 2-BUS+ (sounded great, but no direct outs and made printing stems a pain). I've got the whole UF8, UC1, and UF1 setup going and after watching your video I can see that you're controlling the Delta Control plugin from the Plugin menu with the faders flipped. I'm doing the same, however, I can't access Sigma's 9-16 channels. I'm only seeing 8 "pages" and they're controlling everything from 1-8. But it stops short of 9-16. However, I'm seeing that you're able to control 9-16. What am I doing wrong?

    • @JonConStudio
      @JonConStudio 7 месяцев назад

      Hey Michael, sorry for the delay, I’ve got a video shot for this however other work has taken priority. Trust me you’re not doing anything wrong there’s a huge thread on gearspace where more intelligent people than me showed me the way. Basically there’s a third layer with reaper controlling the sigma and I’ve set the sigma up in OSC mode which meant you could control everything and bank around as you’d like in. The difficulty is it’s not easy and the video I shot was crap and there are caveats Since then ssl came out with 360 and it may be better setting up a template with 16 single channel Plugins loaded into 360 link and Saving that as a template. Then you have your sigma on the 360 layer and on your uf8. It’s so easy I could explain it quicker in the comments

      @@AlchemyMusicCO the software works best when a hardware router is connected between the sigma and the system. I had a few connections quirks when connecting directly but less issues now. Once or twice the sigma app didn't connect to the sigma which was up and running, just closing and re-opening the window seemed to work. I don't know if a firmware update resolved this. The main concern I have going forward is the support SSL may or may not offer with the Sigma now it's been discontinued. Apple and Microsoft continue to update their OS's that the old software may become obsolete.

    • @JonConStudio
      @JonConStudio Год назад

      Yeah unfortunately, it's not install this plugin or program and everything works. I'm not clever enough for that. SSL included an OSC (open stage control) layer within Sigma which was originally designed for live mixers and allows control with an ipad app. To get a control layer that can bank, I needed something that could recognise the sigma, mackie control for the UF8 and translate the messages between the MCU and OSC protocol. Within reaper and on Gearspace we've had users explain they've been able to setup a plugin within reaper (realearn ii) that lets any specific part of the DAW be controlled by this protocol so I've made a basic layer that contains no audio within Reaper. Reaper can also rewire into Protools and follow or trigger playback so I can incorporate automation from the dedicated control surface. It's taken me 2 years on and off through trial and error to figure this out so will do a long video at some point walking through the entire progress. Now, given the choice I'd still prefer to be using the delta plugins and not have to rewire in this manner, setting this up and assigning the channels and commands was boring and tedious but I only have to do this once and had a starting template that just works that I can then filesave as into the relevant project.

    Not gonna lie, I am extremely grateful for the new model. It makes Waves less prohibitively expensive on buy in. I have to sit on "outdated" plugins, but so long as you know how to work around the updates, you end up with what was once considered a world class plugin at a price that doesn't require selling an organ to afford. I wouldn't own any of them if it wasn't for their new business model.

    Setup Guide I decided to set up a separate mixing/mastering station in my studio using SSL equipment. I purchased a UC1, UF8, Fusion, Bus+ and Big Six. I have been using Reaper for about ten years but am not a power user. I have relied a lot on Kenny Gioia's video tutorials. My goal was to get all of the SSL pieces working together with Reaper. Unfortunately SSL does not fully support Reaper in setting up the UC1 and UF8. So I had to wade in (over my head) into getting Reaper and the SSL equipment, the Big Six, UC1 and UF8 configured so that they would function together. SSL's technical support was responsive but they did not have knowledge of Reaper. I could not find any RUclips videos or other information on how to configure all the this equipment together. So I decided I would offer a few comments on what eventually worked for me. The SSL User Manuals are very good in explaining the functions of the equipment. The Fusion and Bus+ provide no particular connection or configuration issues. They are easy to set up and operate. The SSL User manuals and RUclips videos for the Big Six, UC1 and UF8 explain how to physically connect each piece to a computer (in my case a Windows 11 pc). They also do a good job of explaining how to download the software - 360 plug in mixer, Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Bus Compressor 2. The only difficulties I encountered in this were due to my total inexperience with using iLok software manager. But the process worked fine. So I suggest that one follow the SSL videos and User Guides. Just one comment. The Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Compressor 2 are VST's and it is best to allow the SSL downloader to put these in the default folder - which is the Steinberg VST Plugins folder. Pay attention to Reaper's warning that VST plugins should not be placed in the Reaper plugin/FX folder along with the standard Reaper plugins. With regard to the USB connections, I offer the following advice. Use either the USB cables that SSL provides or very high quality cables. Do no use any USB cables longer than 1 ½ meters. Do not use a hub for any connection. Connect the UC1 USB cable from the UC1 to the UF8 “thru” USB input (which is a USB type A input). Run a USB cable from the UF8 USB output (which is a USB type C connector) to your computer. Connect the Big Six USB output to a separate USB connection on your computer. After all the SSL software is installed, go to Options > Preferences > Audio > Midi Devices. A table will pop up. There will be a table listing twelve SSL V MIDI Ports for Input and under that there is a table listing twelve SSL V MIDI Ports for Output. Under the Mode column of each table, enable all twelve ports. Do this by right clicking each port under Mode column. A window will pop up. Click enable. Do this for all input and outputs. Twelve MIDI Inputs and twelve MIDI Outputs are therefore enabled. I do not know if it is necessary to enable all twelve outputs and inputs but that is what I did and it works for me. Right click again on the SSL V-MIDI Port 1 line in the input table. The small window will again pop up. Click on “Enable input for control messages.” You do not have to do this (and cannot do it) for the SSL V-MIDI Port 1 line in the output table. Go to Preferences > Options > Control/OSC/web. Under the blank window, click Add. Another blank window will pop up. There will be a line titled “Control surface mode.” Click on the small down arrow to open up another window with a list of options. Select Mackie Control Universal. (If you are using more than one UF8, I think you also need to select Mackie Control Extender, but since I only have one UF8 I do not know for sure). Click OK at the bottom of the window. I suggest at this point that you restart your computer. Then turn off everything - the computer, the Big Six, UF8, UC1, Bus+ and Fusion. Then I do the following: The order is important. Turn on the UF8 and UC1. Turn on your computer. Start Reaper. Open the SSL 360. Check that the Options setting described above are sill there. Open a new track and ensure that you can find and open the Bus Compressor 2, Channel Strip 2 and Channel Strip 4k b. Turn on the Big Six. Ensure that the USB connection light in the upper right of the Big Six is on. (If you turn on the Big Six before turning on Reaper, the UC8 will not be happy and will pout. It will essentially refuse to talk with you or do anything at all except sit there with a blank stare on its face). In the SSL 360 software, choose Logic Pro for Layer 1. There is no option to choose Reaper. Reaper is not fully supported in this manner - er, not supported at all. (I have seen that someone chose to use Studio One instead of Logic Pro, and this might work. However, SSL technical support recommends using Logic Pro. Most of the soft keys in SSL 360 are already programmed with commands that correspond to Logic Pro commands. Some of these work with Reaper and some do not. I chose to reprogram all of the SSL 360 soft keys. It is very easy to do. Moreover, I did not really like most of the commands that were per-programmed anyway. The SSL 360 video and the SSL User Guide for the 360 are very good at showing how to program the soft keys. I found it actually fun. So, for me everything is happy working together. I find it remarkable that the 360 mixer, UC1, UF8, Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Bus Compressor 2 plugins all correspond to each. When a control is moved in one, it immediately shows in all the others. Pretty cool I think. I also like that the transport controls in SSL 360 work. I duplicate these controls in the first group of soft keys on the UF8. I have also programmed the soft keys to do such things as save, open new project, metronome, undo and redo, snap and unsnap, etc. I like using these instead of resorting to my mouse. But everyone will have a different approach to all of this. The outside plugin controls on the UF8 do not work with Reaper but SSL has been very clear about this, and to me it is not a big deal.

    Nice video - well done indeed I decided to set up a separate mixing/mastering station in my studio using SSL equipment. The Channel Strip 2, Channel Strip 4k b and Compressor 2 are VST's and it is best to allow the SSL downloader to put these in the default folder - which is the SteinbergVST Plug ins folder. I think the Waves update plan is Greedy I wish I had known about their update scam before because I never would have bought anything to begin with, It'll cost me 300 dollars to update all my Waves plugins to get them to function now, and that's not ever going to happen. I'd rather buy something else in the future, then to keep paying for something I've already bought. Greed.

      This is the issue, I’m happy that they’ve reinstated perpetual licences as I don’t think they realised the reaction they’d get from scrapping everything and moving to subscription only. I’ll have to update to the latest version soon when I move systems to an M1/M2 mac in the near future but was getting ready to say goodbye to all the plugs I’d previously purchased in the last few years when they announced subscription only last week

    You said near the end that you recommend putting plugins on the flashdrive, did you just mean the licences or were you saying something else? Also does the offline installer on the flashdrive mean you no longer need to bother with any versions of Waves Central? And is offline installation easy? Is it possible to ensure that Windows 11 NEVER gets installed on my computer and will Windows 10 operate forever or will it eventually fail (sorry not very au fait with computing) Thanks

      Firstly apologies for missing this. What you'd need to do is the following steps. 1 - uninstall all waves plugins 2 - download the offline installer for version ten.(it'll be amassive file) 3 - take your computer offline, disable ALL the internet 4- run the installer and reinstall the plugins you need. At the same time, save the installer files to a stick to avoid this happening again 5 - shake your hand in the air, look to the sky and rue waves.

      They will still work after a year. Any updates waves do after the year you won’t be able to download. I’ve got v9 CLA plugs, v11 others and v14 on other ones. If you’re happy there’s not really a huge rush to upgrade. Keep installers of your older plugs on a usb drive when you activate them if you can

    • @JonConStudio
      @JonConStudio 2 года назад

      @@Machetebeats the main reason i do it is because I move around different studios from time to time so having the installers on the same stick as the licences means I can just instal them and don’t have to worry about upgrading or getting caught out there with older installers. Same thing if your system crashes and end up having to reinstall everything. I wouldn’t be able to do this with outdated plugins on waves central, I’ll just be met with a message saying I need to update to install this plugin and pay the update fee. Imm going to get hit with that soon when I transition over to an m1. Other users are reporting the same for windows 11. For plugins that may be on older versions and not been let up to date on the latest plugin. You can still download the legacy offline installers and then add the plugin installers from there. The thing is it can be complicated to do this for multiple versions of different plugins that you’d have to download a separate offline installer for each version v9, v10, v11 etc and select the plugin you want from each. These offline installers aren’t small files as waves provide the data for every single plugin they made for v9,10 etc. it’s cumbersome because I’d wager waves would rather you pay for the update fee
