      Hopefully is the key word. Over the past 150 years, brook trout have experienced an extensive decline throughout their native range. The Industrial Revolution wasn’t kind to Salvelinus Fontinalis. Habitat degradation from clear cutting forests, mining and urbanization are major factors for this decline. I love native brookies and learning more on how they survived since the last ice age fascinates me. This experience was staggering. Long Live Native Brookies.

      Thank you Hutch!! Wild and Native trout are so amazingly beautiful. I have certainly lost my enthusiasm for stocked trout. They have their place in the marginal streams but I’m definitely against stocking Class A streams or any streams with a quality wild trout population. The wild trout experience is the best. We need to continue to enhance those waters and opportunities.

    15 years ago, I fished elk creek for steelhead. But the river runs low with no dam at the head. Also, many people there were such poor sports that more of the stream was getting posted with no trespassing signs. Then I decided to travel four more hours to the north to the Salmon river and never looked back.

    • @WildTroutMan

    I’m a total noob but my eye kept looking at that stream as “pocket water”, but I mostly heard you referencing feeding lanes/seems. Is there a reason not to fish a small stream like that as pocket water? Cool video. Beautiful day you had.

    • @WildTroutMan
      @WildTroutMan 15 дней назад

      There were several long runs with feeding lanes which generally are the bubble line. This is where food accumulates. There were also seams where the fast water met the slower water which are also very good areas to hit. The dry/dropper works great in these situations. Of course there was a lot of pocket water too. The stone fly nymph would be a good choice fishing those pockets. Different areas of the stream can require a different technique. I started dry/dropper, then changed the dropper fly, then went exclusively nymph. I was reluctant to change things sooner because of cold hands tying knots!!

    Always have loved brook trout..... a local stream literally dried up a number of years ago with no way for trout to migrate back upstream due to a waterfall that was too high for any upstream migration. The trout were there the next year somehow. My theory is that the surviving fry work their way into spring seeps in gravel and remain dormant until the fall rains come. This is in streams that don't have pools that can hold them. The adult trout might die out but these fry can survive just well enough to breed the next year. This video shows this so well. Awesome video!!

    • @WildTroutMan
      @WildTroutMan 20 дней назад

      @@Grouse2275 excellent comment, Craig. After witnessing these trout surviving in the tiniest of puddles and also trout somehow alive on the wet, leaf covered stream bed with no water, I believe your theory is more than possible. I’m sure these trout can survive in the gravel of a spring seep. The only question is for how long. They certainly have some kind of torpor mechanism to survive drought and I believe they have a similar mechanism to survive the deep winter freeze. Absolutely fascinating science that needs more research. Long live the native brookies!!

    Happy New Year Doc! I love and prefer to fish wets/nymphs without an indicator anytime the stream conditions allow. • @WildTroutMan
      @WildTroutMan 19 дней назад

    • @deanf8642
      @deanf8642 19 дней назад

      @@WildTroutMan I use Mucilin (green label). I watch a lot of U.K. based youtube guys and they never use indicators. I'm not sure if they are illegal in the U.K. but one guy did call them "damned unsporting". Most of them use Mucilin to float their leaders. I drilled a hole in the top of a trekking staff to attach a magnetic release. Once in the water It hangs from side my vest always fully extended ready to be plucked off for use. I like you often fish alone in difficult to reach places. A staff definitely reduces the chance of taking a really bad fall far from help. Besides I just turned 59 and even minor falls seem to hurt worse than they used to. I love your channel and always look forward to your next post!

      Where did you move from? Moving water is my specialty so the Delaware, Lackawaxen, Lehigh and Broadheads will certainly get you started. Blue lines require a map.

    Be careful out there alone. I found a muddy mountainside coming out of Penn's three years ago and broke an ankle when the hillside slid out from under me. So I'm in Mount Nittany Medical Center ER, and being a cheeky jokester I photograph my ID band and text it to my Real Nurse fly fishing bride in Florida. Phone rings instantly. First thing out of her mouth she asks, "what did you break.' My Ankle I replied. Her follow up? "Which one?" Left I say. Her medical professional response, "Good, so I don't have to fly up to drive you home." That there is true love! I spent the next two weeks fishing from the banks. Thanks for sharing. Stay hooked. Best, Bill

      Thanks for that humorous reality check, Bill. Blue lining solo certainly has its risks. I did break my right leg coaching basketball of all things. Finished off practice and drove home using my left leg. 😵‍💫 Couldn’t wait to get back on the water so I bought a kayak while my leg was healing. 🤠👊

    Be careful out there if you're alone. I fell in early October, broke my ankle bad along a riverbank, fortunately I had my cell phone to call 911. I could not move from the pain, three fractured bones. I was laying on rocks in the river and was getting hypo thermic before the first EMT reached me. Keep a whistle in your pocket so they can localize you too. The EMT knew approximately where I was from what I told the 911 operator, but still overshot my location by a couple hundred feet and had to backtrack, the whistle helped. I had a first aid kit in my backpack, but it ain't gonna help if you break a leg bone and can't stand or walk. I'm still not able to walk very well, and it will be months before I can fish again.

      That is one of the scariest situations, Jim. I’m happy to hear it ended well with your rescue. I’m too often alone in the middle of nowhere on a blue line stream. I really need to upgrade my iPhone to get satellite emergency coverage. I’m also looking at this product. The review is easy to use with no monthly subscription. hikingguy.com/hiking-gear/acr-resqlink-view-plb-review/ Garmin is the other option but it has a learning curve and also a monthly subscription. When I broke my leg several years ago I invested in a kayak to get back on the water. I absolutely love it. I do carry emergency provisions when out alone but there is a price to pay for that absolute solitude if an accident happens. All the best… do physical therapy to regain your muscle mass. My thigh was gone from 1 month of no weight bearing. It took 2 years to get it back.

    Wild man, you are a soldier. I turned 70 and feel the 'itch' intensely, but last year I had 3 falls and the routine for me is d-o-w-n-s-t-r-e-m in the wood hemlocks and cedars. My waders look like sour bread mold with so many patches, but the cold waters of winter hold the greatest secrets and open lairs of the 🦈🦈 I used to plow and trudge after. I have to wait for Spring or I'd end up like G. Washington: wet and dripping after checking on his duck traps and blinds...and then, matter of fact: a case of fatal pneumonia.

      Oh, Ege, I dread the thought of the day I’m not able to plow into the most remote stream whenever I want. It will happen at some point so I’m trying to enjoy every minute now while I can. These places are so special. There will be a time when I can’t get to them. I’ll only have the memories of what once was. I hope you can relive some of your adventures through my videos.

    You should use a minnow trap to catch them, it will catch more and be much easier and faster

      @@Sills71 The water is flowing now so the trout should be good unless we get a drought next summer. I am curious how they survive ice conditions in the winter. The stream is shallow so it must come close to freezing solid. Stay tuned…. I’m going to keep the cameras rolling through the winter.

    Great looking fish - Loch Vale is very fun to fish The one thing I don't understand from your video is at 2:45, when you mentioned Catch and Release with barbless hooks are mandatory for the RMNP system. If you read the regulations for RMNP, barbless hooks are only required in bodies of water that are catch and release, the other bodies of water that are catch and keep, barbless hooks are allowed.

      Thanks you and thanks for that update on barbless hooks in RMNP. It truly is a treasure; remarkably beautiful with stunning trout. I’m glad you have been able to experience it. 👊

    Thank you sharing, your efforts, passion and dedication in saving these precious Brook Trout! This really highlights the relationship between the effects of climate change and drought conditions.

    • @WildTroutMan
      @WildTroutMan Месяц назад

      Thank you for your words!! Yes, brookies have it tough but it certainly won’t get any easier if temperatures continue to increase. They need water but it has to be cold water. Cold, clean and pristine. Lots of water won’t matter if those water temps are above 70 degrees. 🐟

    Another excellent video. Thankfully the drought appears to be over here ... but now there's the issue of water freezing in the shallow tributaries.

      Hey Paul!! Yes, it goes from one extreme to the next for native brookies: floods in the spring, heat in the summer, drought in the fall and frozen solid in the winter. Yikes!! I do plan on filming through the winter to document how they survive. 🐟
