He was killed during the Crimean Offensive at Sevastopol, less than a month before the city was liberated. Hi Humble. That is an interesting place of death and the only other example I can think of with an Archaeological place name is also in the Crimea area. In October 1941 the 22. Infanterie Division were fighting for access to the Crimea, specifically in the Isthmus of Perekop. One notable place where they were fighting was called the Hünengrab Assis or in English, the Megalithic tomb of Assis.
Hi Will, really interesting, thanks for the info! That's surprising that the only other archeological reference you've seen is also in Crimea. I'm hopeful someone will be able to chime in with the exact site, it would be interested to see what these particular Roman ruins would have looked like.
Hey man, I recently picked up some death cards would love to know more about them. Any way you can help?
Sure thing! I have a video on researching them here: ruclips.net/video/3jRxX0sTZAw/видео.htmlsi=3Ct2Hkiv0f7GXv3P You can also shoot me an email at ahumblecollector@gmail.com.

When I fist saw the flight suit, I was wondering if this was A Luftwaffe pilot who lost hi like defending Germany against American and British bombers. It still amazes me the staggering number of lives that were consumed in the Eastern Front fighting.
This german soldier has been killed in the small village of Lamotte-Buleux or at the Mont de Caubert, possibly during the last day of the Battle of Abbeville.
Enjoy your video, I have looked at ebay for those death cards, boy they are expensive like $60 a pop, I can't afford them so I appreciate your information of each individual veteran and history. Thank you very much for giving humanity to the fallen 🙏
Were you looking at US Ebay or German ebay? American ebay has gotten ridiculously expensive over the past few years but on german ebay (ebay.de) cards can still be found for very cheap. The average death card should be around the $10 mark or cheaper.
@@AHumbleCollector I was looking at the US, I will check the German one, thanks 😊
@@jamesfarmer6431try German eBay American eBay half of the time is sellers buying from German eBay then Jacking up the prices.
Seems like a reasonable assumption
Muellerlehrling may translate as "baker's apprentice" or "miller's apprentice"
I think that miller's apprentice is it, thank you!
These are so sad.
Hi Humble. It is quite possibly that he was indeed fighting with the 17. Panzer Division and his transfer was somehow not recorded. Really interesting video, thanks for the upload.
Thank you for all your videos! It’s always nice to see new notification on your new videos.💜
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them.
I was just wondering where do get these wonderful cards. Thank you for bringing humanity to the fallen , such a wonderful history of the soldiers who die, RIP 🙏
I get most of mine from German ebay!
Hi Humble, thanks for the upload. On Ancestry there are civil death registers and there is an entry for Paul. He did indeed die in Semlin Hospital and interestingly it says this was due to Unfall, Flugzeugabsturz (Accident, plane crash). So I guess this opens up more questions, like under what circumstances did this happen and was he the only casualty.
Very interesting, thanks Will! I haven't looked much at the civilian records, I'll need to remember to check them more in the future. This definitely raises a lot of questions though, I'll have to do some more digging.
Humble Collector - interesting death card. I have a question; in your collecting, have you ran across any death cards for members of the Kriegsmarine?
He definitely has they are quite available on eBay
I have a few, admittedly when I was starting out they didn't come up very often on American ebay, and when they did they always sold at a premium. Since I've started buying from German ebay I see them much more often and have bought a fair number. I think I only have a video on two currently though.
Cool... I look forward to new releases on your channel. Keep up the good work!
Man he looks like he is 10 in his photo...
Are we sure this kid didn't lie about his age or that pic was taken when he was in the Heer Scouts or something? He looks like he's 12 years old.
Looking at the photo again, i think this may be a case where the family didn't have a current photo and had a painted uniform added to an old photo. If he had lied about his age, I'd expect his family to have noted the correct one on the card itself, which would have varied from the military record.
My God, Johann looks so young!
Looks 13
Hi Humble, thanks for the upload. I totally agree with you about the same place names coming up due to the current war in the Ukraine.
It always catches me a bit off guard whenever I find the wiki for a particular village, and there's a new section from the last few years. It's a really eerie feeling.
looks 12
I came here to say this!
Agreed, he looks far younger than his age.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing.
I cant believe people in japan are not allowed to own them,
Do you research the individual for his casualty record before purchasing the card?
Occasionally, but most of the time I buy blind. The only exceptions are when a card is really bizarre, or in the cases where the seller has research they put in the listing. A big part of the fun for me is discovering the story as I'm doing the research.
Thank you for sharing.
Hi Humble. Curious; approx how many cards total in your collection and how long has this been a hobby?? (Idea- Future episode?) Do a video, (or 2), counting down + reintroducing your "Top 10" cards, and info why they are your favorites? And maybe a video of your top 5 rarest finds? Just thinking outloud. See u on the next 1.
Answering how many cards I have is a bit of a difficult question. If I had to ball park it, I'd say I'm over 1,000 cards now, but I'm not sure how far over. I've probably purchased at least 400 in the past 12 months, though, so that gives you an idea of how much material I still have to share with you guys. The cards that are going up this month I believe I purchased near the end of 2022, and only got around to researching earlier this year. Those are some great ideas! I do another month of posting daily videos in March, I'll definitely consider doing a top finds video for sure. I've gotten some pretty unusual stuff that I showed in unboxings and haven't taken the time to do videos on since. Collecting militaria became a hobby back in 2017 during my Freshman year of college, which is when I started this channel. I purchased my first death card that spring and over the next few years as I learned how to research them they became my favorite thing to collect.
Hi Humble, great research and thanks for the upload.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the upload Humble. It is crazy to think that Sterbebild September is here again. Time seems to be going by so fast.
It really is! I feel like this year flew by.
I have a death card of someone wearing a DD Heer M35 helmet. Could I share this with you to see if you can find any information?

Hi Humble, great haul with some really interesting death cards. I must admit, the trench art scapula is an amazing piece and I had never seen anything like it, so thank you for sharing with us.
Military 🪖 🎖 things are interesting 🤔
Hi Humble, thanks for the upload. There is something really poignant about death cards to religious men and I often wonder if their faith stayed with them till the end.
Thank you for sharing.
You wouldn’t have to work hard at all to have a killer Sam Kinnison impression.
Lol I'll have to give it a try.
Hi Humble, thanks for the upload. When a casualty card can't be found especially for such an early date it is so frustrating. I would agree he was likely a member of 4. Gebirgs Division and interestingly there were elements of the 1 Gebirgs Division who died in or near Berislawl too.
Thank you for sharing.
I just happen to stumble across your WW2 German Death Card videos and find them fastening being that I have ancestors from Germany and at least 2 were killed in the war. Were these cards given to the families of the fallen by the military? I was wondering if my ancestors family would have gotten one of these cards. I have the casualty records for them but they are somewhat difficult to translate. Thanks for the great videos.
Glad you're enjoying the videos! These cards would have been printed by the families, not the military. Usually a few dozen or a few hundred would have been printed at once, and the family usually would have kept several copies or even ordered more for the anniversary of a soldiers death. If you need help translating their casualty records I'd be happy to take a look at them. You can send me an email at ahumblecollector@gmail.com.
I take it the Whermact didn't have Chaplin's or "C. O." status. Never really thought about that.
Surprisingly, both the Heer and the Kriegsmarine had chaplains. However, the hoops they were made to jump through ensured their numbers remained small. Chaplains were not allowed in the Luftwaffe or SS though. In many cases, priests who were serving with frontline units would often get unofficial approval to act in a spiritual role for the men they served with outside of the official chaplaincy, but this depended entirely on the attitude of their commander.
Great job! Very interesting
