California native garden tour, March 2023
Welcome to the first tour of our California native garden based in sunny San Diego County. Most of the plants you'll see here have been in the ground for 8-9 months, while others were planted very recently and are beginning to establish themselves nicely in the soil thanks to our substantial winter rains.
Soon we’ll be celebrating 1 year since the transition of this small lot in San Diego county-previously full of mature, water-intensive, tropical plants and trees-to a quite different landscape re-introducing native species of California wildflowers, trees, ground covers, and shrubs.

V useful to see the plant names and to see all these in great shape! What is your soil like?
Hey Dan! Thanks for watching! At first, our soil was pretty rough. Not even sure we could call it soil. 😅 We had removed a lot of non-native tropical plants and there was a mix of heavy, hard clay soil, rocks, and roots, but we were impatient and wanted to get plants in as soon as possible. We amended a little bit here and there using soil from the nursery where we purchased our native plants. It took about a year for the soil to start looking and feeling really nice. Now it hardly resembles what was there when we started two years ago. We lost a few plants along the way, but for all sorts of reasons. It’s been a really fun learning experience. 😊
Hell ya
I love that ladybug surveying it's meal!
