Stardust Memories (1980) - Armchair Cinema (Movie of the Week)

It is seen as the movie that slammed the brakes on Woody Allen's successful run in the late 70s. It was seen as mean-spirited, self-indulgent, self-serving and a bore. Were the critics right? Judge for yourself.

The Best Picture Winners, Part 6 | Cavalcade (1932-33)
Просмотров 5823 месяца назад
It was the last year that the Oscar were seasonal, and the last year before Hollywood bent to the all-consuming production code. In that came a banner year for progressive films of all shapes and sizes. However, the Academy backed a dull-as-dirt adaptation of a Noel Coward play that was loaded with grace and civility and would become one of the least seen and forgotten Best Picture winners in O...

I too am a completist but believe it or not, Stardust Memories was my FIRST Woody movie, when I was a teen in 1987. I fell in love with it and have seen it at least 40 times. Even bought the one-sheet and had it framed! Different strokes. I will say after a lifetime of seeing 1000s more films since, it doesn't seem as groundbreaking to me (certainly seeing 8 1/2 invoked obvious comparisons) but for what he was trying to do I think it's one of his most fully realized films.

I've seen it twice and both times my perception of it was different. I can't imagine what I would draw from it seeing it 40 times.

What a horrible review. How unfortunate for you to be so trapped in your own time that you are blind to the historical importance of a film like this. This movie crossed the line on numerous human rights issues. Perhaps Marvel is more your speed.

Another year in which there were better films than the winner. Hollywood has always been too enthralled by the British upper classes.

I'm amazed that so many people had a hard time following the plot. It really wasn't so dense to say that. It was full of interesting story arcs happening that coalesce in the end. I only wish they turned up the Juice a little more, let him say FUCK without bleeping it, and let him say more raunchy jokes like the first one and it would have been perfect. Because everyone is either a little softer in their old age, or afraid to offend (most likely the latter) or both, this was the only flaw for me that holds it down a little.

One note, Tim Burton didn't write this (nor did he write the original). I agree with your points on the issues with the story but just wanted to clarify that although Burton has a hand in how the story is portrayed on screen, the actual plot wasn't his.

It was an entertaining movie. I just watched it yesterday and I enjoyed it. I think people get off on themselves by being overly critical these days. I saw another review which was more accurate in my account. It said that this was a harken back to movies in the 90's: it's not trying to be too deep or create a new cinematic universe, if you like the trailer you'll like the movie and it's worth watching. I agree with that take.

Very moving take on the subject of war. I have seen all three versions of the film in my life and I enjoy each of them for different reasons. The original film is my favorite. Maybe it is the black and white that make it seem like a horror film, maybe it is because I was amazed at the brutality portrayed in a film made in 1929/1930 that captivated me. I grew up watching all the WWII films made in the 40's and 50's that sanitized the violence. Then I saw the original All Quiet on the Western Front when I was around 20 and was amazed by the brutality on film, the message, and the heart and soul put into the production. I was pretty anti-war for the next four years and then 9/11 occurred and I was swept up in the bullshit. All the killing and dying that occurred during the GWOT and I do not think that the world is safer or more free by any stretch of the imagination. I am pretty convinced that we will never learn the lessons of war and, unfortunately today we are facing the possibility of another world war that nobody wants...and yet I feel that it is inevitable. Thank you for for your thought-provoking take on the subject as well as these films in particular. You have earned a new subscriber today. Godspeed.
