West Virginia Conservation Agency
Добавлен 12 янв 2012
The West Virginia State Conservation Committee and the West Virginia Conservation Agency work to conserve the state's soil and water resources through partnerships with the state's 14 Conservation Districts and others.
These partnerships date from the late-1930s and 1940s with the formation of West Virginia's first Conservation Districts, and continues today with programs to help farmers install best management practices to improve their lands, maintain and repair watershed flood-control and water supply structures, respond to flood events, reduce nonpoint source water pollution and protect and promote the health and safety of the state's 1.8 million residents.

Broilers ? Turkeys??? I see the Herefords and Black Baldies....
How big does this get?
Beautiful leaves on this chesnut tree. So glad these trees are coming back and I love the fact that this is being done!
Dunstan chestnut is almost all Chinese. At best they are 1/4 American chestnut. I would think TACF could set up a state agency with much better stock.
Great project where can i get some for my property
Anyone know about Nimrod stover from luneys creek 1803 1880?
been tying to find trees to plant
They do have good marketing, I'll give then that.
I’m surprised for an agency such as yourselves you didn’t do more research on dunstan trees. They will not perform the same as American chestnuts because they are 90% Chinese. They will grow short and wide because they are essentially orchard trees.
Almost no one wants to hear this, because it seems like it has taken on something of a religious nature, and questioning the label makes you somehow a heretic. It's almost like when we all "knew" that the Sun orbited the Earth. I have actually heard people say things like "it's 15/16's American" If you ask to see the data, they look at you like a heathen.
If you're growing for nuts rather than lumber though, the Chinese genetics are ideal. I don't think there's any proven chestnut lumber species in circulation presently.
If only it was that simple, except it's not real American Chestnut and I see no reason to invest time or effort in spreading that. Might as well plant Norway maple. 🤢 That's sarcasm. Eastern North America has tons of beautiful, wonderful tree and shrub species and some could use our help to regain their former glory. Growing non-native plants is my last choice.
How do they grow in zone 8 and swampy areas?
I live in zone 8b northwest florida and have three dunstan chestnuts and an unknown chinese variety. the dunstan I believe was developed in florida. I have them on a relatively well drained area and they are doing well. letting enough sunlight seems to be an issue. the squirrels are another issue. We average about 60 inches of rain. For 2020 nearby pensacola got 88.41 inches of rain. The chinese chestnut can tolerate some moisture, but I have seen standing water can do them in. I have not planted a dunstan that is chinese hybrid in a super wet place. The american chestnut will likely never come back in the south due to the number of chinese and dunstan chestnuts in the area. The pollen is wind borne, but still a well adpated hybrid sounds ok.
That is a well protected tree fence and a tree tube.
How is planting seedlings from trees selected for orchard growth going to restore a tree with timber growth?
Dunstan chestnut trees are only a few generations in, very little evolution happens until way farther down the line
@@altelephono3373 Unfortunately due to founders effect plus a couple of generations of artificial selection that isn't likely to happen. It is like trying to get wolves by raising litters of Yorkies with a starting population of 4 dogs total. Dunstans are mostly Chinese in genotype as well as phenotype: [(Chinese x American) x Chinese] = patented Dunstan cultivars, which you never see for sale. All three of the Chinese trees used in the crosses came from orchard lines, with one singular American tree as the same American tree on both sides of each Dunstan tree's family tree. Chinese trees, especially those from orchard lines, grow short and spreading rather than straight and tall. Then out of hundreds of seedlings, a handful of trees were selected to be patented Dunstan cultivars. They were selected for orchard characteristics rather than timber characteristics. Patented Dunstan x Patented Dunstan aka [(Chinese x American) x Chinese] X [(Chinese x American) x Chinese] = seedling Dunstan sold as "Dunstan" trees. So a narrow genetic bottleneck (4 original trees, 3 of which were Chinese) plus selection for Chinese characteristics rather than American characteristics hampers any evolutionary shift towards a timber type population. I have two Dunstan trees in my backyard. I'm not saying they are terrible trees, just that it is misguided to expect them to be anything other that what they were bred to be. Orchard type trees that attract deer by producing large amounts of commercial quality chestnuts.
@@danielsmith336 add to that, the 3 Chinese trees that they chose to do the breeding with, were subpar. A co op that buys chestnuts in Ill. pays lower prices for dunstans, because the taste is just not as good as what others are growing. I heard this from a guy who grows chestnuts in Pickneyville, Ill. I worked at the University of Missouri's nut tree farm and cultivar trial, and I had my choice of any in the study to take cuttings from when I went to improve my own plantings. They had a Dunstan tree there, and it's wasn't a bad tree, but there were many others that were better, so I went with them. I wouldn't have a problem with people who want to grow and sell a Ford, but calling it a Lamborghini kind of ruins it for me.
You’re not bringing back the American Chestnuts with Dunstans. They don’t even look nothing remotely close to an American Chestnut trees. They look just like Chinese Chestnuts. I’m telling you people you don’t want these in your yards or even close.
What needs to happen is for them to release the American chestnut GMO

keep up the good work!!
Mr. Tenny, Thank you for your efforts to bring chestnuts back to the WV outdoors. I learned about the American Chestnut a few years ago. I came across some information about the Dustan Chestnut tree, and began buying and planting a few each year. I was under the impression they were mostly American. I'm sorry to say they are not. (see youtube video: chestnut chat, historic importations and chestnut cultivars. at 1:16 into the video they speak on the Dunstan) This news was shocking to me. As it turns out the Dunstan is not even a true cultivar, not even 50% American chestnut. In the video mentioned there is tons of great information about the different types of chestnut trees. The video has a lot of information I was not aware of, I thought you may enjoy it. If you haven't already. Anyway Thanks again for your efforts.
Here's a real American chestnut. ruclips.net/video/oNxTvFtN7dE/видео.html
It's too bad that the Dunstan has been marketed as if it were somehow mostly American. The grafted tree, "Revival" was a good cultivar, but it is not even discussed anymore. I'm all for planting chestnut trees, but people should be clear eyed about what they are planting. There are many other chestnut varieties that are superior to Dunstan seedling trees, and they are not being planted because of the dominance of Dunstan with its marketing. If you have not already grafted your Dunstan seedlings to better varieties and would like any help with that, feel free to contact me. I'm not selling anything, so that's not what this is about, but depending on where your property is, you could be growing things easily twice as good. I like Eaton, Qing, Pandora, Black Satin, Jenny, Peach, AU Homestead, and others.
Great job ! And great job Donnie
