Baritone string comparison: D'Addario Chromes vs XL roundwounds
Merry Christmas! I've had D'Addario Chromes on my baritone for a while now, but wasn't sure I still liked them as much as I did at first. I don't think there is much information or direct comparisons between flatwounds and roundwounds on a baritone specifically, hence this video. I'm aware that the spoken audio and video quality are far from ideal, sorry about that!

This flanger is a bit different from the rest (Mr Black Shepard's End)
Просмотров 184Месяц назад
I will not apologize for the pun. I showed off this pedal in my recent pedalboard rundown, but it deserves a video of its own. In my search for a flanger, throughout a dozen or more Reddit threads, and while trying to decide between all the usual suspects (BF-3, Electric Mistress, E-Lady, Polychrome,...), this one never come up once and I frankly don't understand why. Granted, it's pretty old b...
This pedalboard is about as good as it gets for me

What's up, I was feeling self-indulgent so I made my own rig/board rundown, just to show off some (or most) of the sounds I tend to coax out of it. Turned out a bit longer than expected, but hopefully you'll still find it helpful or interesting in any way. I've done separate demos of a few of these pedals, and I'd be happy to do more of them if there is interest. Same goes for guitars and basse...

Welcome to the channel! (original song)
Guy, this good (=
Thanks!
It seems some weird artifacts got into the audio, most noticeably in the more distorted/fuzzy parts. This happened in the past as well but I thought I'd managed to fix it. Sorry about that, it's really annoying but I'm doing my best to find a way to avoid it in future videos!
🤘👍🏿
Have been gigging with the dream for two years ... no amps... sound men love it , I love it , always lots of compliments on sound from audience
In the dream 65, is its trem pre or post spring emulation?
post
Sorry man, for some reason I totally missed your comment. But yes, it's very closely based on a Deluxe Reverb which has tremolo after reverb.
I think the SFT can easily fit in as a great bass overdrive pedal. The Stoner setting is pretty much unusable if you ask me but I do like the Stones setting.
It's been a while but yeah, it sounds pretty farty which is a cool sound in a mix, not really my thing on its own.
Now I can play Tommy Bolin!
What makes you say that? I'm not familiar with him.

Love the time knob twiddling in the Quadrant 4 solo with the feedback oscillation.
Thank you for this lesson!.....been struggling with this effect. The tutorial is on point!
You're welcome!
this review is so awesome!!!! I own it and love it. I really liked watching your video because you are very creative and showed really cool ways to play it.
Thanks, that's really nice! Definitely does everything I'd need an analog delay to do and more.

Ok, now u made me wanna buy a subspace
I real like the subspace
Me too!
I like the way u compare the pedals
Thanks! I did my best to make it a fair comparison. Not as fair as having them both in a loop switcher, but still.
Great demo, Wow what an awesome pedal! Thanks for sharing
El mejor pedal de delay analógico. Buen vídeo
awesome tips! thank you
Very impressive
Just ordered the Odyssey (seems quite similar to the Subspace)! I was looking for videos of the SFT and your video made me change my mind and get a Hamstead instead ;-)
@@the_red_channel Nice, I think you'll like it! I was conflicted between both Hamsteads but I play 50/50 bass and guitar, I figured I'd miss the parallel clean circuit on bass if I got the Odyssey. Might take minute to get familiar with how the controls work and react with each other, but once you do, it's ridiculously versatile.
Realistically, these are meant to be used together to achieve a surf drip sound, as the Surfybear is an exact copy of the Fender 6G15 outboard reverb unit. It had a lot more drip and reverb on tap than the amps did, so you're comparing an amp reverb and tremolo with an external reverb unit and amp tremolo. To me, both units sound excellent for what they are emulating. Nice video
As a builder, I like the high mass style bridges especially on fretless for no other reason than they have more adjustability than the old barrel bridges.
Used the True Spring since it's release. The Surfybear Compact remains the only unit I would replace it with. The TS can be further customized to any sound you desire, even if it lacks the vibe and attack of the real thing, a quality that is felt more than heard, and typically lost in live mixes. Much is lost in UTube demos, including those properly recorded.
I've thought about selling the metal and getting a compact instead, purely for space reasons, but I'm glad I didn't. I don't know enough about the technical side of things but I figured the compact is a compromise I'm not willing to make (yet). I'm still curious to try one and compare them though. If money weren't an issue, the true spring does seem like the best option, but it's just too expensive for me, and without trying one, I find myself getting hung up on the fact that, even with all it can do, it's not the real deal and it may not have the magic of my surfybear.
@@donderjong The Compact has a different spring pan, with 3 short instead of 2 long springs. The result is literally a tighter and less flubby response, which isn't really capable of the extremes that the 2 spring is. I personally would keep the one you have, as besides the size, - it's the bomb. When I bought the TS , Surfybear wasn't a thing, yet; now I have a local dealer that carries their full line. I might keep the TS, but I plan on getting a Compact or a Metal soon.
Excellent demo!!! Thanks
Awesome video ty
what happened with your Odd Mush channel ?
It still exists but I'm currently not making videos.
Super late but still: in case you missed it, the Odd Mush channel has been back for a while now! 🙂
How about another go with the stoner switch engaged?
Maybe I should while I still have it. Just couldn't get a sound out of it that I liked with it engaged.
They both sound great, I think the BDDI gets it because of the versatility but I’d be happy to have either on my board!
Thanks for the comment! Maybe I used it wrong but the SFT was a bit too farty. Much prefer it on guitar.
@@donderjongI’ve been listening to a lot of live Queen recordings and Deacon’s P bass is surprisingly farty when it is heard alone, but then it’s perfect when the others are playing too. I think the SFT at low drive levels nails that.
Nice demo. I have Dream 65 and I love it. I have the Surfybear Metal in my sights.
Thanks, and excellent choice!
Yes, but not weight. Like aluminum Les Paul tailpieces. For bass check out Albridge. They also use bell bronze saddles.
Thanks for the tip, for now I'm leaving the vintage bridge on. Sounds better overall compared to the himass, maybe if it really needs replacing I'll look at alternatives.
@@donderjong Yeah, weight acts as a mute. Mass couples the bridge to the body resonances, lighter "mass" behaves like your bent steel vintage and with more harmonics in the resonance but more "wood" in the tone from your body. Zinc saddles generally mute, brass open up the resonance. The bell bronze saddles on the Albridge open up resonant harmonics even more than brass. The Wilkinson bent steel bridge is super affordable and has brass saddles. You may have chromed brass saddles now, don't know, but most Chender saddles are zinc. Another fiddly tip is to make sure the string winding is on the saddle point, not the flossy end winding of the string. Hard grommets from the hardware between the outside edge of the bridge slipped on the string to hold the string end off is an old school trick. Might seem fussy but shit rolls downhill...
@@oldasrocks9121 I highly doubt they're brass indeed. Vintage style with brass saddles seems ideal if I ever need a replacement. I never have the silk bit on the saddles, but it's a good tip with the grommets.
As a luthier I have often made tonal adjustments and I try to reduce variables where possible. When making changes to evaluate sound, I think it is important to start out by loosening the strings. Or start with a fresh set of strings. If all you do is loosen the strings, not even take them off, then tune them back up, they are going to sound different, new sounding for awhile at least. I work with violin family instruments and there are more variables than a solid body bass, but the basics are the same. Some violins sound better with a heavy, high mass tailpiece, some do better with a light, flexible tailpiece. There is even a system for double bass that has no body to the tailpiece, just a system of cables. Some basses sound great with it, some it does not make any difference, and some people may think it has a detrimental effect on their instrument. I wish I possessed the insight to know what idea will work on any given instrument, I don’t, so if becomes trial and error. Any change, the player should live with it for awhile to get a fair assessment. Interesting video.
Great demo, thank you !
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!
That Surfybear sounds amazing
Definitely a keeper. Even if I don't use it much, it's too good to get rid of.
@@donderjong yea for sure. After hearing it in your video, i had to look it up, and its way cheaper than i thought it would be. Definitely on my list now.
@@orryfishburne5326 If you can afford it, I'd say go for it! Unless the size is an issue (in which case I'd recommend the Compact model), I doubt you'll find a more authentic spring reverb. Their Classic is arguably the most authentic, but that's not really a pedal anymore.
Really nice sound!! The lick is yours?
Thank you! Yes, I came up with it during recording, but it's always possible I heard it somewhere before and it stuck with me.

I just noticed your screen name. That is great! Let me ask you... I hear the kind of power punk or pop punk elements in your song, but are influenced by Rush at all? Because I can a hear a little of that too here and there. Do you know 'Black Grease' by the Black Angels?? It's a whole different thing, but you might like the guitar tones they get. Anyways... rock on man!
I wouldn't say I'm a big Rush fan, I only know 2-3 songs, but I do like them. Recently it's been mostly QOTSA and some Ramones, so the punk thing makes sense :) I'll check out Black Angels, thanks for the tip!
Good Jam! You get surprisingly decent tone out of that Squier bass. Love it!
Much appreciated! I'm a sucker for Squiers, they do what I need them to do and I kinda like that they're still a bit of an underdog. But an (old) Fender will always be the dream.
@@donderjong I feel you 100% I have a Squier bass and a Strat. I've actually had the Strat for like two years (Someone gave it to me) and have never played it yet. If it's as good as the Squier bass then I'll be happy. I was surprised how decent the bass is to be honest. A guitar that really shocked me I got at a garage sale for $3. It's some Walmart BS First Act telecaster'ish copy, but it honesty plays really good, and has it's own unique twangy beater electric guitar sound that is fun and useful at times for something different.
