    This is WONDERFUL for me, as a teacher of this new Spec. Thank you! Is it always the case for this Spec that introductions are unnecessary/superfluous? If so, I will one hundred per cent teach your method of attacking the question immediately in a sort of thesis statement/topic sentence for the whole essay so it has clear direction and drive that remains focused.

      Hello! For spec B, section A extract-based questions are where students need intros as this allows them space to write an overview which the exam board favours. For section B and C answers, intros can become time wasters as students either don't answer the question or just list stuff they know about the text(s). Far better to start discussing the task asap. Remember that students can wholly agree, wholly disagree or partly agree/disagree with the statement in the question (if it's a 'what extent do you agree') - the questions are deliberately written to prompt debate. I'm sure I'll upload many more videos in the next academic year!

    Hello sir, can I ask a doubt? Is Baba just a symbol of hypocrisy and failure? Isn't he also I don't know proud and virtuous (especially while saving the woman on the truck, building orphanages, giving alms etc)

    • @englishwithmatt1735
      @englishwithmatt1735 Месяц назад

      I don't think he is just that - I think he could also be seen as having courage and pride, such in his rejection of American welfare (General Taheri the opposite) or refusal to have chemotherapy. Baba could also be seen as a victim that, despite being a wealthy Pashtun, he only left his homeland with a suitcase (ironically all that Ali and Hassan left with too).

    • @englishwithmatt1735
      @englishwithmatt1735 4 месяца назад

      The mark scheme doesn't mention the amount of references students should make because what's more important is how students interpret and get meaning from their references. E.g. after you have quoted something, say "this suggests / foregrounds / emphasises / reinforces..." to analyse your reference.

    The reason students learn frameworks at GCSE is to give them the notion of structure. It's like having stableisers on a bicycle. it gives the students of all abilities a level of confidence. Of course there are students that will quickly move beyond the restriction of a formula and feel able to ride off into the distance, but the notion that scaffolding is always restrictive seems ill advised. What kind of students do you teach?!

    • @englishwithmatt1735
      @englishwithmatt1735 4 месяца назад

      Hello. Formulas may work better for GCSE and practice, I agree. However, to use your analogy, there is no reason students need to use stabilisers if they know how to ride the bike, in which case, formulas begin to restrict students. As an examiner, I see students who use frameworks at A-level are usually less successful. This video is aimed at students who want to achieve the higher marks and, in my experience, who often enjoy being able to have their own voice in their essays rather than fulfilling a 'tick box' approach. I am currently working on a video about this which I will upload later today. Different things work for different students/teachers and staff have to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of the students before them. If I had a student come to me and say they needed an A*, A,, B or C, I would not ask them to use a formula in their work. If I had a student at risk of failing, a formula may work to get them some marks in order to get an E or D.
