\+/ Night City Stories \+/ Chapter 69, Part 1 - Chrome and Punishment The eerie atmosphere the night brings in Night City is in full effect. Cold and quiet, the various members of the crew sit in silence as the wind calmly blows. The only thing going through most of their minds is violence. This is an all in situation with everything at stake and they know it. Their chrome, their eds… what they’re owed is finally for the taking. BugBear and Carter at their point of attack sit crouched down behind cover as they assess the security situation at this 4 story warehouse. Carter, in full focus takes a deep breath and quickly slams the spacing between each of his fingers against each other ensuring his leather gloves are tightly secured on. He hears BugBear’s whisper which grabs his attention. “Usually get nervous like this before ops?” She asks playfully while being calm herself. “Adrenaline doll. Heh… Definitely the type of question I’d expect from a runner. Not much in the business of getting your hands dirty…; No no, These are the nerves of a solo about to get to work.” He says with a smirk looking over at her. She returns the smirk. In that moment they hear heavy footsteps on pavement past the cover they’re hiding behind. Carter motions BugBear to wait and hold her position. 3 Mercs passing by and chatting hear the sound of quick footsteps approaching behind them causing them to react quickly by turning around. Carter shoots 2 of the mercs in the head with a silenced pistol dropping them instantly. The third merc shoves the barrel of Carters pistol upwards causing him to misfire as the merc grabs his wrist. The merc then pulls a knife with his free hand and attempts to stab carter directly in the chest. Carter catches the mercs knife hand as the two quickly glance down at each other’s tied up hands in a dead lock. Carter quickly shifts his footing in an attempt to toss the merc to the ground causing the two of them to go tumbling down to the pavement. As the merc begins to overwhelm Carter with his strength he notices how chromed out the bastard is. He frees his knife hand and raises it to stab Carter in the face but is quickly snatched by the neck from behind by BugBear’s neon pink monowire. The force of the yank puts him on his back causing BugBear to stumble slightly from the weight. She then places her foot on his shoulder for leverage and yanks even harder, piercing his chromed out neck and severing his head causing blood to spray out of his neck onto the pavement. She offers her hand to help Carter up… assisting him back up to his feet. “Dirty hands means sloppy work.” She says with a smile on her face, looking him in the eyes. Carter smiles back completely turned on. “Thanks for the save doll.” He says as they finally let each other’s hands go. The pair then make their way into the warehouse through a side entrance. “Place is fuckin’ huge.” Brian whispers to Audrey as they both scan the area. “Looks pretty dead too… weird… think they’re out somewhere?” Audrey asks “Not sure… guessin’ we must’ve did a bigger number on em than we thought.” Brian glances at Audrey. “Hang back here.” “What!? No!” Audrey whispers loudly “I don’t need you gettin’ hurt out here.” He insists “I’m NOT just going to sit here Brian!” Brian pauses for a bit and turns his full attention over to her. “Fine… If you’re gonna run with me on this then you’re gonna tell me what happened back at the Pistis Sophia choom.” Audrey pauses with a serious look on her face frustrated while Brian returns the look. She eventually breaks growing upset. “What. You want to hear that they stripped me..? Tied me up..? Cut me..? Put a rope around my neck and drug me around like a fucking dog on a leash? They… they were gonna-“ Audrey stops as she gets choked up. Brian gently places a hand on her shoulder causing her to look him in the eyes. “Stay close.” He says in a deep tone. The pair of them slip their way into a cracked window on the bottom floor of the warehouse. As they enter, they notice 2 mercs working on a Chevilon Emporer searching its interior and stripping it for parts. Brian grabs the bigger Merc from behind slowly choking him to death. This shocks the merc next to him causing her to gasp and reach for her iron before being quickly grabbed from behind and stabbed in the neck by Audrey; Causing blood to spray out onto Audrey’s chest and jaw. As Audrey struggles to maintain her grip on the falling and dying merc, the pair of them slowly begin to lose balance. Audrey shoves her lifeless body to the floor with force as it slams down with a heavy thud with a splatter of blood. Brian and Audrey then look at each other and nod before drawing their iron and slowly moving forward deeper into the warehouse. “I’m going to need you to wait here.” Zaunya says to Netty as the pair of them look on at a group of 8 mercs standing in a group chatting away deep in the warehouse compound. The group is clearly not just some civilians loitering around, it’s a well built, well equipped group of soldiers ready for anything to pop off. Netty looks at Zaunya with his digital black mask on, altering his voice. The yellow pixels being used to illuminate various facial expressions he wants shift to a yellow pixelated expression of disbelief. “What…? Are you crazy? One sec, lemme-“ Before Netty is able to begin quickhacking, Zaunya flashes toward the group. With expert efficiency, you see Zaunya use her mother’s combat knife to either stab or slice the throats of each of the 8 mercs one by one before any of them can even react. Netty looks at the 8 of them standing there before they each begin to drop in a blink as blood comes spraying out of each of their necks. As Zaunya looks back over her shoulder at each of them dropping, she hears the working mechanics and air compression of a Militech Centaur turning around behind her. Before she knows it shes face to face with a chromed out merc powering up the centaur exo-skeleton and pointing the thermal cannon right at her alongside the sounds of thermal energy being built up. “Shit!” She says to herself with her eyes wide open as she instinctually reaches for her iron completely out of position and out in the open face to face with this thing. Before he’s able to fire the cannon, the exo-suit begins to short circ as the merc tenses up and screams loudly in pain.. echoing throughout the warehouse and causing various mercs throughout it to raise their already high strung attention. Zaunya glances back and sees Netty’s eyes glowing red as he quickhacks the exo-suit sending sparks flying throughout it and the merc’s chromed up body. The merc fights through the quickhack and raises the thermal cannon toward Netty as it fully charges, causing Netty’s eyes to open wide in fear. Zaunya raises her Nue firing a single shot and sending a bullet through the merc’s skull sponge killing him instantly. The single loud booming shot echoes throughout the entire warehouse blowing the entire crew’s cover. Every merc within the compound grabs or loads their iron as they begin to quickly scramble in confusion. = We’re made! = Zaunya shouts into the comms of the entire crew. =NOW!= Brian shouts into the comms as you see the entire crew simultaneously stop in their tracks, close their eyes, and take a deep breath. They hold it in for several seconds before letting it out extremely slowly and opening their eyes back up while raising their weapons. The entire crew executes the break on Brian’s command perfectly. They each then continue at an extremely slowed pace making each step they take calculated and allowing them to hear the frantic stumbling, vibrations and poundings of footsteps from the scav mercs rumbling throughout the compound. The lights abruptly cut off due to BugBear jacking in to a terminal. This causes the emergency lights to unexpectedly engage giving the warehouse extremely dim, sparse lighting. One by one, as the crew slowly positions themselves, various mercs come flying out of various doorways in a frantic panic pointing iron. Brian drops a merc racing out of a doorway with a shot to the chest from his Nue causing him to slam up against a wall due to his momentum and leaving a splattering of blood behind on it. He steps toward him and places another shot in his head before slowly continuing forward. Carter, exiting out of another room right behind Brian headed in the opposite direction shoots another Merc dead with a clean headshot right before he can raise his gun to shoot Brian in the back. Carter continues to clear the floor as he steps over the dead merc he shot and continues heading in the opposite direction away from Brian. BugBear then comes around a corner and walks past Carter in a different direction down a hallway. A merc pops out from behind a wall at the end of the hallway and shoots at BugBear causing her to flinch and duck down slightly before firing 3 shots at him dropping him in a thick cloud of debris and gunsmoke. The crew continues to flow like this through the warehouse… continuing to cover each other from various unorthodox angles with slow confident efficiency… dropping various well armed mercs as you hear them squealing in fear and pain or panic spraying their various guns before being silenced by single shots and double taps… The crew... is locked in.

\+/ Night City Stories \+/ Chapter 68 - Ride With Me As night falls upon the neon glow of Night City, the crew is seen flying by a busy Jacked and Coke headed back toward Pacifica. The engine of the Galena G240 roars with all the might it can as BugBear’s Nazare racer quickly follows behind with Audrey’s car following closely behind her in a caravan style fashion. Netty holds onto BugBear tight as the speed of the caravan increases and the traffic becomes less busy. Being this close to her without any communication is fucking with his head. Having not had the opportunity to talk to her about their past experiences causes it to be the only thing on his mind. As she rides through the dense streets, she does her best to keep the same thoughts at bay… knowing the likelihood of him bringing it up, she tries to remain focused and doesn’t say anything. He can’t help himself as the words pull themselves out of him. He speaks through their comms = Bear.. = = Not now… please..= She quickly responds in a flat tone. = We need to talk- = He says growing frustrated. = You need to be focused Netty, alright? = She says aggressively = This isn’t the time. = He bites his tongue as he feels another fleeting opportunity slip away as the two continue through the streets of NC. Audrey with both hands on the wheel glances over at Zaunya frequently as Zaunya stares out the window. “You ok?” Audrey can’t help but ask in a soft tone while looking over at her… sensing her energy. “I’m fine… just. a lot on my mind.” Zaunya says in a tired tone. After a clear pause of silence in the car. Zaunya speaks. “I know you were always close with my mom.” Zaunya says causing Audrey to quickly look over at her very unexpected. She continues. “I mean.. you once said you guys spent a lot of time together but… you never really talked about why and… honestly I never really had the nerve to ask.” Audrey looks back at the road anxious without saying anything. Zaunya continues. “I um… I always just assumed that you did her chrome work. Right..? Was… there anything else?” Audrey’s mouth opens as the words fail to come out. These questions are the last thing she expected to be asked right now. She finally responds. “I… we…” Audrey struggles to speak causing Zaunya to look over at her curious. “We did combat contracts together… counter offensives mostly. Whether it was gang goons or corporate rivals like Sovoil made no difference… Dark times. A lot of violence… A lot of killing. Wasn’t just in Night City either. All over the world… Anywhere PetroChem had a stubborn leak that needed fixing.” Zaunya says nothing and listens on as Audrey gets choked up. “I... I was her trauma medic.” Audrey finally says in a tired tone of confession and relief. Zaunya says nothing while taking the information in. Her mind begins to race. “Heywood. Born n’ Bread choom.” Carter responds as Brian continues to skillfully pick at his brain while they roll in the Galena G240 together. “Mm.. Rough times I’ve heard back then.” Brian claims “Yeah, well, nothin’s free nothin’s fair in this town choom. Gotta get it where ya live.. either that or you catch a bullet first.” “Preem guillotine ya got there.” Brian says causing Carter to look down at it. “Heard its known for havin’ uneasy stability with that high fire rate. Crazy considering how quickly I’ve seen you drop gonks with it.” Carter responds with half a smile, “Yeah, it was a gift.” He says before catching himself. His facial expression abruptly changes as he disengages and continues to look out the window. Brian notices this and says nothing. Allowing a long pause to take over in the cab. Two men coming from similar backgrounds having faced similar traumas in the past connect in silence through the unspoken word as the tires rolling on the pavement takes over for a while. “Be sure to put it to work… for them huh.” Brian says as he hands over a tracker shard breaking the silence and looking over at Carter. Carter returns the look and grabs the shard without saying anything... caught off guard by Brian’s level of already understanding him. A level of understanding that could only be obtained through relatable experience. The crew now finds themselves back in Pacifica. A place they were unsure they’d ever leave not too long ago. They stop the caravan about a mile away from their target location.. parking in a secluded alley far away for any nosy light. Much like people, Night City becomes different once the sun goes down. Being shrouded in darkness has the potential to do certain things to people. The lack of being seen reveals parts of people they’d rather leave kept in the dark. Brian stands before the crew looking on at them in silence as they look at him. He turns around to walk up the alley to begin as they all follow behind him. They slowly break off in various planned directions about a half mile from the location. Using the sparse street lighting to their advantage. Carter and BugBear break off first to their position which fucks with Netty to no end as he watches them slowly leave sight. Brian and Audrey then break off next to their position as Brian helps lift Audrey over a chainlink fence before making his own way over. This leaves Zaunya and Netty together as they continue to their position. As Zaunya does a final look over of her gear and iron she glances over to see Netty staring in the direction that Carter and BugBear left in. She picks up on this but doesn’t mention it. “Ready?” Zaunya asks in a soft tone grabbing his attention and causing him to look over. He silently nods.

\+/ Night City Stories \+/ Chapter 67 - Gear Up As the sun calls it quits for the day, you see the baron back alley area behind Audrey’s hideout. The breeze begins to pickup as random trash and debris floats around the quiet, empty alley. The crew is seen slowly and methodically gearing up in various places of the hideout. The energy in the room is both tense and serious. Much like the feeling of inevitability Zaunya and Brian faced together when dealing with 6th street, this is no different at all. Everyone in this room clearly understands the risks as well as what they’re marching into. As far as they’re all concerned, They are preparing for war… Carter checks his spare magazines for his SMG as the high-polish finish on it reflects the light of the hideout cleanly. He takes deep breaths while trying to remain focused in a new place amongst new people.. Fearing a repeat of some of his past experiences. Although his outward appearance reflects comfort and confidence… inward hes feeling a bit uneasy… leaning heavily on his experience to keep himself squared away. He does his best to bury the thoughts of his past history with this organization of scavs. This opportunity to exact vengeance is one he never imagined he’d have… and he has every intention to exploit it to its full capacity. BugBear, wearing her crimson red netrunner jumpsuit steps passed Audrey while taking a drag of her smoke. She glances and sees Netty with his digital black mask resting on his lap while staring at the DR5 nova she gave him in his hands. He looks up to see her walking past him as the two exchange a brief neutral look. It feels as though every interaction they have, regardless of how subtle, pokes and prods at the two of them like pins and needles. Audrey is finishing prepping her combat medic gear with her black PetroChem standard issue Liberty resting on the carpeted floor by her side. The iron had no identifiable markings except for a big “Z” carved deep into the handle. A gift from Zaunya’s mother, Zayta…It would appear that Audrey is taking her mind back to a place she has tried so hard to escape… More than likely triggered by the intensity and brutality of the collective recent events shes experienced. As various thoughts of her and Zayta’s time together race through her mind, so do the memories of brutality and violence they faced together. Her singular purpose and goal at the forefront of her mind is clear… Keep. Zaunya. Safe. At all costs. This unwavering, strong desire to tend to Zaunya’s well being is a subtle maternal mystery continuing to linger… Although filling in the blanks yourself shouldn’t be much of a challenge. Zaunya, with her black leather facemask on has already finished gearing up in her all black operator fit. She slowly approaches Brian from behind.. helping him put on his heavy jacket as he looks down at the carpeted floor. She prolongs the contact by squeezing his shoulders firmly and letting her hands slowly cascade down his arms before letting go. He takes a deep breath while racking the slide of his blood red, crimson Nue. He promised himself once upon a time after everything he’s lost that he would never find himself in this life again.. He hears Marilyn’s and Graves’ joyful giggles in his head as his mind begins to race. ‘Evelyn…’ He thinks to himself accompanied by a wave of guilt that washes over him. He remembers his inability to face her and look her in the eyes which hits him hard. Various random memories of time’s past are abruptly halted by Zaunya approaching him from the front and looking deep into his eyes. Brian looks up at her into her emerald green eyes before glancing around the room and noticing the rest of the crew standing before him geared up. Its clear that they are all tense.. but ready… looking to him to make the call. This visual hits Brian hard as it brings back uncomfortable memories of his past successes and failures. He hears the voice of his father, Enrique Varga enter his mind. A deep, raspy and serious voice he hasn’t heard in quite some time nearly having forgot what it sounded like… it grabs his attention. “Mijo… As a soldier… your loyalty is to those you fight alongside. As a leader… their very lives are in your hands. At that point.. your ability to take care of yourself no longer matters… only your ability to take care of your pack. In this life… when violence and chaos falls with the odds against you. The lone wolf dies…. But the pack survives.” “Lets delta.” Brian says looking on at the crew before turning around and walking toward the exit. Audrey holds the door open for him as he slowly steps out with the crew following behind him one by one.
