    They could have borrowed things from Spore! In Spore, although Space Age is already late-game, it still offers so many things to do! Like expanding your colony, collecting artifacts, establishing trade routes, making alliances, space encounters, and… Grox. I think what starbound could have done was, making races more diverse and engaging, instead of just having different appearances and armors.

    Yeah the no man's sky problem was prevalent The difference between starbound and no man's sky is that hello games made sure to live up to their promises after failing to do so and STILL support the game Starbound is all but abandoned and neglected by the developers Also the mods just aren't it, like fracken universe one of the most appealing mods is made up of a bunch of stolen code and mods. Terraria has some insane mods like Spirit Mod, Thorium Mod, Fargo's souls mod, and the tried and true Calamity Mod

I installed frankins universe to add more variety into the game but getting off the fist planet now takes 10x more effort and reaserching and it just felt like a full time job at that point. Well: -Lead developer scammed young programmers and artists to make assets without properly paying them -A revolving door of workers leaving and joining was created so no one actually knew what is the standard for doing things, or what's the over arching end goel of development -Sooooo many scrapped mechanics from alpha and beta -Reworked all bosses into missions wich restrict the way to fight them (always the same arena, no cheese, no farming, no custom challanges) -Removed the old lore wich was unfinished but had huge potential (each race had a different story reason to travel the cosmos) -Added new lore wich is just your typical boring "YoU ArE ThE ChOsEn OnE" nonsense -Procedurally generated monsters removed and replaced by the same exact list of mobs ON EVERY FUCKIN PLANET -Envivormental hazards now HARD LOCK YOU out of planets instead of letting you take a "quick look" while taking damage -Reworked planets into a very strict tier system where EVERY fuckin' planet of the same category is EXACTLY THE SAME -And a shit ton of removed dungeons making dungeon vareity very repetitive. -Never fixed the janky movement yet relies heavily on platforming for most dungeons -There are no hazards or events, or invasions on planets (exept for the meteor shover on moons) there is absolutely no point staying on any particular planet after you mined the next tier of materials. -Quests pay you shit and just make you pick up a singular item from fuck knows where most of the time. -Player built colonies are absolutely pointless and limited, they gift you junk items, they sell you junk items an they are mediocre in combat. -Also you are straight up just not allowed to have a base on moons because of said meteors. -NONE of the systems are tied together, you spend most of your progression by mining underground where biomes are basicly the same on every planet and on pre built missions where you fight the same 6 boring bosses on pre built arenas, there is ZERO reason for you to explore despite the game having millions of planets

    I never really felt like it "lost" it was always seen as a "terraria-like" not a competitor. I think they just ran into the issue that most space games run into, especially survival based ones. Players want to explore more, they want to feel like theyve uncovered secrets and had a genuine experience with a game, space games hardly ever give you a reason to develop a single world. Where in terraria youre forced to work with what you get and learn the mechanics and you get to see your world develop over time. In starbound you might build a nice house or discover a cool landmark, but ultimately youre going to leave that place behind, instead of encouraging dedication, it encourages indecisiveness, because no matter what you do "there must be something better out there." Then when their world generation wasnt on point, or the player started to notice too many similarites between planets, well then they became dissatisfied.

    Personally, even though Terraria is by far the better experience on its own, I love Starbound for the modding community. Terraria's modding feels a bit limited, while Starbound's feels closer to how players mod a Bethesda game. Far more customization. It's a fantastic modding platform more than a game on its own.

    What I find funny is that there's a more recent indie game that suffered almost exactly the same fate: Black Skylands. Game was extremely promising in early access, and was kneecapped by the addition of a basic, unwanted story that places you in a role you otherwise never would have asked for. The protagonist is as dull as a cardboard cutout and not many of the story beats actually hit in any meaningful way because it's all cookie cutter slop. They apparently also stripped away a lot of things in the final release, like ship customization. I couldn't say what deserved to be axed and what didn't since I never played the early access version but most people despise the devs for doing it.

    While most of this is true, i can't help but notice that more than half of the symptoms cited are the same for any addiction What you're going to tell me that the crackhead down the street or the alcoholic parents gambling their child's college tuition away don't : -Feel alone -Have a lack of self control -Have a low self esteem -Have a low emotional intelligence (tbf that one is debatable, depending on the addiction) -Have depression or over agressive tendencies -Fear other's people judgment (since it's mostly shameful stuff that people will judge you for when getting addicted to) -Suffer physical consequences from withdrawal I'm also pretty sure that the increase in violent tendencies might be due to the disassociation of RL and video games depending of how young you started playing. Might also be due to the involvement the media require you to have in order to enjoy it, but that's more specific to that media being included in situation : Tell a diehard football fan their fav team sucks and a Souls fan that DS1 kinda sucks balls to play in retrospect, and you'll have the exact same result :,D While the lack of physical effort required to play videogames is one of the symptoms that you could say it's indeed the media's fault, nearly all other symptoms are due to the addiction itself, not the media. You're gonna feel the quasi same thing if you stop playing and start gambling, then stop gambling and start doping, then stop doping and start forever bingeing. Just like everything in life, it's all about balance. A hard as shit balance to find, mind you, haven't found it myself but still, a balance nonetheless.

      ... what? You're not arguing against anyone? He stresses he does not exempt video game addiction from other addictions multiple times (at 8:32, for example). All this text and you add nothing lol. Strange topic to drop a whataboutism on, too.

    • @BluBone
      @BluBone 4 месяца назад

      @@TheRealFallingFist Must've missed it, that's my bad, i kinda went afk at the end vid so i didn't listen to all it had to say. To be fair to me tho, if the first example that came to your head was at the end of the video, he probably didn't articulate it enough. But since he did, i'm indeed arguing with no one :,) The only two symptoms related lines i've heard while listening to it again is a comparaison with alcoholism and a "addiction can be debilitating". The reason i've written all that is that i think it's important to know where certain symptoms comes from so we can act on it in our own way, because videogames aren't going anywhere and probably aren't going to change for the better, so we have to. For example, the football comparaison i did could be valid, many sports fan will act like degenerates and be way to involved into it, up to a point where they'll be defensive about it, the same way a game addict would.Yet you wouldn't call football an addiction as there isn't a match every day, so it's not like they could indulge in that addiction for most of their time. Most other symptoms were dictated into "...Study, after study after study, all conclude that video game addiction causes..." which made me interpret it as "oh yeah, because those drug addict studies didn't", as he's been repeating "video game addiction " for most of the video. That might be my cynical brain's fault, as i don't tend to see the best interest in peoples words, but it just proves how easily it someone can misinterpret anything ! :< Btw, not quite a strange topic to do so, it wasn't a "u bad cuz you didn't say that" situation , it wasn't whataboutism. I just commented on something i think should've been clearer in the video, it doesn't take anything from the main issue he's explaining (which i very much agree on) . Commenting in the comment section because that's what it's for, hell maybe start up a conversation on the topic :p It's a strange thing to reply on a 106 views video's comment starting with a "...what?" like you had some kind of live reaction even though it's written but till now you don't see me judging :D By the way, i don't know how you're gonna respond, but just in case if you tell me that i shouldn't post comments if i didn't quite hear everything, just know that fully knowing the entire content of a video isn't legally required to do so, and that i'm allowed to make mistakes. The arguments i gave weren't even sourced as it only came from my/friend's experience alone, so it's more of a piece of opinion based on, maybe/maybe not popular facts, it doesn't actively hurt the video / creator, it doesn't do any harm. It's not like im posting big misinformation that i scream loud and clear on every roof to "CaNcEl PrOgReSs". It's literally just a comment. Hope this explains it !

      @@BluBone Lots of words, lol I guess I understand the point you're making. There are definitely fundamental effects of addiction regardless of its source. But all kinds of addictions play out differently. I know many, many addicts, of many different things, and while there are similarities, I feel it's a bit reductive to generalize them as much as you're doing. Breaking your leg and breaking your arm are essentially the same thing, medically. They're treated in much the same way. But they will have different effects on the patient's life. And one would do well to understand those differences in an attempt to empathize with their experience. This video was about video game addiction. So I would argue the focus in the comments should be on video game addiction. This is why I thought it was weird, since it sounded like you tried to invalidate it as a serious issue. Sort of like "Yeah yeah yeah, video game addiction. Hey, we're all addicted to things, everything in moderation!" Onto unnecessary meta discussion: "... what?" Feels like nothing more than a literary tone indicator in my eyes. You read it and understand the attitude I approach your comment with (confused inquiry, sort of as if I didn't hear you correctly). Just as you would understand "What?!" or "What!" or "What...?". People rely too much on tonal indicators (/j, /s, etc.) and emojis as crutches these days. I don't have authority to say you're not allowed to comment, lol. I would never say anything like that. I'm a firm believer in the free expression of opinions. I only prefer those opinions to be as informed as possible. Personally I don't post anything when I feel I may not have all the facts yet, regardless of the context. But that's just me. And me criticizing your comment is also me expressing my opinion. So you'd do well not to take it as a personal attack. You do not need to get defensive about your right to comment because I felt it was a little pointless. If you're going to retort, please try to keep it a little more brief. I don't mind responding to an argument, but I don't like dedicating this much time to read and write a RUclips comment, lol.

    • @BluBone
      @BluBone 4 месяца назад

      @@TheRealFallingFist Yeah i tend to wander off way too much while writing, that's my bad. I guess i'm just always seeing the worst in everybody, thats most of the problem : I made that comment in the first place as it kind of had that demonizing tone we've heard so much on anything the youth is doing (including yet not limited to VG) which made it feel kind of disingenuous due to other forms of entertainment being as addicting and problematic , yet much less talked about, especially when the roots and many symptoms of those are the same. Maybe comparing it to crack was a bit far-fetched, but comparing it to things like gambling and Netflix for 18 hours a day is more in the same ballpark, and a pretty big problem too. Same reason i've preemptively defended myself that way : I've been "gatekept" from forums/comments section / fanbases ect... for less than that during my time , so i just went on the offensive about that kind of behaviour before anybody did to keep it away. So hard to get a read on people online nowadays that i start any conversation defensive... Welp, i have to apologize on my rudeness if percieved as such, the comment was indeed unwarranted, as you pointed out, he ain't gonna talk about all addictions all day long when the video is focused on Video games. It just didn't sit quite right with me. I also apologize if any mistakes hurts your eyeballs, you probably guessed it already but english is not my first language. Add that to the fact that i write novel-sized comments and you got all the ingredients for a migraine :,)

    Starbound was the first game to teach me about Early Access scams and to be wary of them. The lack of motivation killed SB as it painfully crawled through EA year by year with barely any significant changes. All while modders managed to fix and add tons of features into the game that were in fact promised after like 3 months in EA. They are scammy assholes and the fact they ran to become a publisher only makes it worse.

    "A good game just has to be good and word of mouth will do the rest" I'm not entirely sold that it's this simple. Balatro isn't ONLY a good game. It's also an extremely unique one. And with that comes many questions - how unique your game has to be? How marketable does your game's premise has to be? Could a creative platformer also get that popular from word of mouth? Or would it have to be just as out of left field as something like Balatro?

    • @Jan12700
      @Jan12700 6 месяцев назад

      I think it doesn't need to bee that unique on the surface, only so much that people get interested in it and want to see more. I spontaneously don't have any examples for games, but an Anime. Dungeon Meshi is just a simple story about a group exploring a dungeon, a story premise that there was a million other times, but it's also about cooking monsters. With this it has a very unique selling point where many people get interested and just started watching it and got absorbed into the Anime because it is very good. If the cooking wasn't in it many, like myself, wouldn't get interested in the Anime, because it would just be the next dungeon story thing.

    • @progress_games
      @progress_games 6 месяцев назад

      Hmm yeah I definitely agree that for natural word of mouth to occur a game does have to be unique in some way. Balatro’s success is certainly thanks to its uniqueness, but there are so so many ‘unique’ roguelikes that come out all the time, so within the roguelike sphere (Olexa, NL, Retro), I think it’s main draw is its quality, not uniqueness. It definitely plays a huge factor in growing popular outside of that though…

    Next time do NOT forget to talk about Frackin Universe! It was what revived the game in my eyes because instead of the 125 hours I had I now have 10 times that much. 10 TIMES! Starbound was boring after a while. Frackin universe gave me a builder that was unprecedented. Way better than Terraria and that's my absolute favorite game (20 times even starbound's amount of hours (yes really)). Not to mention it gives acces to free ship building, not set upgrades like the main game, actually able to destroy and place walls and make the ship truly yours, planets that never had accessibility (gas giants mostly) new ores, machines for automation, class settings, new storyline additions and a way better albeit slower progression system! Frackinm Universe is like a new game, it's starbound reenvisioned. And it's still actively being worked on. Though, because it's considered what I've read to be "feature-complete" it doesn't get massive updates like terraria's base game does. But it does still get updates and it gets them often! So main take away, do another video with Frackin in mind! Because thios one completely glossed over it and I know that was not the point anyway but still I want to see where you stand onm starbound as a whole with this specific mod in mind! And if you don't know it, seriously consider playing. It's a whole new experience and it will change how you see starbound. If not that, I plan on restarting my streams very soon. Watch along at Capt_silva on twitch! Or don't do not feel like you have to and don't feel like this is promotion I hate that shizz myself. But I do have to let you know where to find me if I want you to learn about starbound. Hell, when you're done with that, if you feel like leaving, by all means feel free to. God I hate to have to say this but that's what hap[pens when you stream I guess.... Anyway, I hope to see a new video on starbound sometime in the future from you with this in mind. I really do. I also didn't like starbound before I found this mod, this mod is something special man!
