This is super informative. You're really helping me out on my project.
Didn't know about angle casting or shadow casting. Really helps justify diy. Thank you.
Good update. I totally agree about size of holds for hobby shapers, keep it small for value (and it's still fun).
I really like the intro! Very good advices for future home wallers too. I feel like 20-30 degree is the steepest you need and from there you can make it harder with smaller holds (unless you're training for climbing in a really steep terrain) . Also up to 30 degree I don't feel like kicker makes any difference. So basically everything that you covered :) Thanks for the video!
Nice update on the wall. Just curious, would you know if Rampf is still selling direct to consumers? A month or so ago I went to the web store and saw that there was nothing available for sale. Just went back now and the whole website is gone. Can't find any new links/info on the main Rampf site. Would be a damn shame. Thanks!
They are. I just purchased some in fact and pulled some out of a mold this morning. The current contact is Nathan.Jacobs@rampf-group.com and he can set you up. I'll also find out if they're putting it online somewhere. It's a little different with industrial level businesses that don't usually sell the small quantities like what we use.
Definetly gonna try this. Grat Idea. Thanks for share.
where are you getting your lonestars? Where I get holds they cost a dollar a piece.
actually I lied, they are like 100 for $75 .
Have you experimented much with the Wetfom? I like how forgiving and fine it is, but have not made any molds from it. I'm wondering if you've had any luck with it or if you think it's worth trying out, or if it is way too soft. Thanks!
38*, weight bearing on bottom, straight into studs, into joists up top
My husband and i got into a huge debate (argument) about this! this is something I was trying to do for some of our holds, especially in the cross sections/ seems of they plywood that were sections that intersected to a frame we built.... THANK YOU!! I knew it could be done. Thanks for this video!
It feels like destroying something you paid good money for Iol. Took me a minute to get over it on holds I had bought.
hello what is the filler in the video called?
What is the little 3d logo tags you use called for marking your logo on the holds? Thanks
Just a logo. I woodburned a small wooden square, made a mold of it, and then I cast it with leftover poly after a cast. I've got a dozen of them glue into the foam just before molding.
@@AuxArcClimbing perfect thanks for your reply! The holds look great btw 👍
Super sick series. Really appreciate you doing all of these videos.
Pretty valuable knowledge, thanks for sharing!
I want to add to that if the hold is very strange and the surface is difficult to find a central bolt spot... Then just using screws might be the best option.
is the 3/4 ply strong enough to just screw the holds directly into or do you need a backing?
Nah 3/4 ply is great.
Just came across you channel. Are you from AR?
Not originally but I've lived here now several years.
@@AuxArcClimbingcool, there is some good climbing around the state. I live here in NWA. You near by? I started building my daughter a wall and will definitely be making some holds.
@@josesoto-mg7de nah I'm on the other end
@@AuxArcClimbing oh okay. Well keep up the great content man!
How long did you wait between layers?
Dude, such a great idea! I built a long vertical crack on my home wall but I hate that they're a perfect 2" and 2 1/2". The ability to change the spread into a V and make it closer to the crack spread on projects is brilliant. Thanks for putting this video up man!
Great stuff! really great tip on watching out for the aggressive pulling holds as screw ons. I was wondering if you have a gear list for drill bits and anything else that you keep up your sleeve? Im excited to try out some angle pours and just distorting in general. awesome vid.
just went on your channel a minute after I typed this and saw the video you posted. gonna go check it out lol
@@isaiahosborn3717 Yeah the "Hardware for the Homewall" is the video you're looking for, I think. I've been shallow casting for awhile, it's an inevitable step because at some point, you'll underestimate poly or something. Angle casting is a bit different though. I've even done a few molds with the purpose of trying to move the bolt slightly so it's still useable. That's hard on silicone though.
Great video JD. I’m going to try that angle pour. I’ll send you some pics of the results.
I probably need to dedicate a full video to it at some point, but it falls under the screw-on umbrella for sure.
Definitely turn broken holds into screw ons
Grey review! You should do more of these.
I'm planning a few
Great review! I really love the product, likeyou said it is very easy to get a good consistent product out of it!
How thick does the silicon end up being? What would you say is the minimum thickness that you would want to see to prevent ripping? I imagine a thinner coat would have a short lifespan.
On most of the mold it was about a half inch thick. I wouldn't want to go below 3/8ths.
The more you say simple, the worse I feel about myself for messing up 😂
RUclips is really bad about comment notifications lol. Just seeing this. The secret is wood filler putty. These volumes aren't pretty and there's definitely some wood filler in there to make up the difference.
Very nicely done 🤙
just used your referral code. I was already going to order but I'll take the 10% and I hope you got a kickback!
Dude, that is genius!
Great, easy volumes! If you drill from the finished side to the underneath, it doesn’t matter if the wood splits. Just a trick!
Wow😲 i just met Eric on Instagram an absolute gentleman 🙏👌. He had some nice constructive things to say and more than willing to help me. Keep up the amazing work guys... from Oz 🦘🧗

man.... thanks so much... i´m from brazil... and i serching for this solution for a climb hold hollowbacked... for months. save my live hehehe
Hey thanks for the review of our polyurethane materials Jd! A quick update to mention that we rolled all of the upgrades (moisture scavenger, antimicrobial/antifungal) back into the original IE-3092 formula. So that is the best stuff we have for both home-wall and higher volume applications. We also now have 3 speeds in order to optimize throughput in a production scenario as well as very large castings. Thanks again!
How does one go about ordering this product?
@@bandyrand8772 Thanks for reaching out... Samples on the way!
@@billmolitor2060 Hi Bill I reach out to the parent company. I'm also wondering about specs and possible sample?
also, any info on dyes and other casting additives?
I was searching for something like your volume but I think I’ll start with the simple 2x on the side of the wall. Thanks for the video!
I've heard you mention Smooth-On 320 before. Would Smooth-On 300 work as well, or well enough to be worth it if it's my only option without paying stupid amounts of shipping?
I'd have to look at the specs. I don't know on that one. I'd compare the two and see how far they're off.
@@AuxArcClimbing hmm, sounds like its at least worth a shot trying then. This is going to be my first time trying to mould/cast myself. 🤞🤞🤞
@@FlipDripDry I used three comparison tool on the Smooth on website to check it out. They look close enough to at least try. One may be a little softer than the other, only slightly.
Thanks for the video and the motivation. Just made 2 small volumes, super easy and quick.
Hobby Lobby Sucks, over priced as hell.
At sticker price, probably. They run sales on everything though, plus their 40% off coupon. Hobby Lobby caters to a crowd who loves their sales, so sticker price is high, sale price is close to what they actually want. It's a silly game, but it is what it is. My female relatives absolutely love it.
@@AuxArcClimbing OF COURSE FEMALES LOVE IT - THEY'LL SEE A PAIR OF $50 SHOES FOR $300 THAT ''WAS'' 500 AND TELL YOU THEY JUST SAVED YOU $200
Hello JD Haigler, I love all your videos! They are really clear explained and your work is very skilled! I really appreciate how you explain the steps detailled and it helped me a lot lately! I have some questions if I may ask. 1) Do you use a specific sculping clay for making the negative for the hollow back? 2) How do you make a polished part for a dual texture hold? Do you add a layer on the foam (like paint) before putting silicone on it? Or do you add a layer in the mould on the surface that needs to be polished? Thanks in advance :)
why aren't you doing the same thing with the bolt hole?
oh nm, i can see in the one that you are
Another great review JD. I'm learning a ton through your videos. Thanks!
I’m looking into smooth-on per your recommendation, but any good cost effective resins you would suggest? Are the resins mostly generic or are the some brand specific types that are worthwhile?
Not really. Most stuff is just a flat $30/lb. You can get Alumilite High Strength 2 or 3 through their website and use my JDCLIMB10 code to get 10% off your first purchase, or you could pick up the High Strength 3 locally at a Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon. Those are the cheapest options. Smooth-On does have a cheaper silicone, it's called Oomoo25. It's a rapid setting, much less durable silicone that has a lot more quantity for the same price, it's just not as lasting. If you're not doing anything with undercuts, and it's relatively simple shapes, that's where I would start.
Great Video, motivates me to maybe create one at home. Maybe just hit the t-nuts in at the end or have screw ins.
Where can I get the rampf 3080? Can’t seem to find a place to buy it... preferably a place I can get the colored one!
Hop on the DIY climbing holds Facebook group and look for Bill Molitor. He's the rep. Or email him at bill.molitor@rampf-group.com
JD What was the cure time for the 2 different Polys?
Sorry also what was the working time?
7-9 minutes for the 3080 and 8-12 for the 3092
This was helpful, thank you. Did you just buy from Bill?
I'm sorry I missed this. Yes, i just went through him.
Is the diameter of the pex tube 3/8”? Or is it have inch as to make sure the 3/8” bolts all fit?
It's 3/8 but if 7/16 is a better option for a little more room if you can find something that diameter
@@AuxArcClimbing thank you so much. Also the pex doesnt have any issues pulling out of the poly hold after its set? Im assuming it gets a good spray of mold release?
@@travisb8102 It's got a lifespan. I just had to drill out some pex actually. It doesn't adhere to the PU, but the PU does expand slightly and applies a lot of pressure. However, the worst thing is when you get any nicks or scratches in the pex, and the PU sets in it. Makes it very difficult to get out. I'm trialing some long bolts that will hold up better and seeing it that will work. But that only works in molds that have enough silicone support to hold the bolt upright, thus the appeal of pex tubing.
@@AuxArcClimbing have you ever just drilled the 3/8” hole long enough to hold the washer on , then just drill out the rest of the 3/8”hole out each mold? Just wondering if that would add longevity to the hold.
Thanks JD! Your videos are always appreciated!
