Smittybilt 2781 - MUST DO MODS!
You will spend $70-100 for these mods. I opted for quality parts so I spent right at $100. This kinda sucks after spending $170 on the compressor itself, but now it operates SO much more efficiently! It should have came this way from Smittybilt! Honestly, if I could do it again, I may have sold the Smittybilt to get the NAPA Maxitrac air compressor because it's roughly DOUBLE the CFM of the Smitty 2781, but I'm overall happy with this current set up.

TUNDRA run @ Hurricane Creek Trail, NC (2/1/22)

Completed in early February with my 2018 Tundra (2.5" lift, 33" M/Ts, no lockers). I would definitely say 4x4 is required. I ran in 4-Lo the whole time with tires at 18 psi going about 5-10 mph. Seemingly small mud holes are deeper than expected, so enter and exit with caution. Lots of scrapes on my skids and sliders. Scraped rear diff at least once. VERY ROCKY. Lots of deep ruts. How to fit a 35" spare tire (2007-2021 Toyota Tundra)
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.2 года назад
This video demonstrates what you need to do to fit a 35" spare tire under your bed in the factory location. This procedure should be the same for years 07-21. (possibly 1st gen Tundras as well, but I am unsure, someone please correct me in comments if so) Some people claim to be able to fit a 35x12.50 without cutting these tabs, but I bet their spare doesn't fully seat in the assembly, also the...
Just wanted to thank you for putting this video out. I'd never even heard of a slide valve until now. I like this solution much better than hacking up the compressor itself to install a pressure switch. Does the slide valve also act as a one-way check valve? Also, I'm still going to install a 125psi pressure relief on my connector hose just for peace of mind.
Glad this video could help you. I suppose it is a form of a check valve, but you are controlling the slide valve manually. There is already a pressure relief valve built into the side of the compressor near the handle. Its a brass valve with a pull ring on it.
@@oversizedoverlanding2365 That's a good point, I've heard mine pop and it's quite loud. I just don't know what the factory pressure valve is rated at so I might go down to 100 PSI valve on my fitting just so I don't strain the pump. Thanks again!
@@johnlyle1545 you’re welcome. enjoy.
Why a 3/8 slide valve and not a 1/4? The lines are all 1/4.. wondering before I went ahead and did this myself
I think the 1/4" valve was backordered indefinitely at the time of this video, so I just went with the 3/8"
Ummmm. Ummmm. Ummmm. You should take a Speech Class, and stop using ignorant speech fillers. Ummm. Ummm….You sound uneducated.
Any updates on the cv boots?
Perhaps a dumb question, but why cant you just chill in the truck while airing up and look at the tpms sensor on the dash?
TPMS only updates after the wheel has been rolling.
Made all the adjustments and it works great. Thank you for the tips.
How have the cv boots held up.? Did you install a differential drop
Why do all this when you can just bend the bracket out of the way?
I've watched a Handful of videos on missing the Smittubilt compressor. You are the only one that mentioned a concern about the open system! Thanks for bringing that up
Any idea what the thread size is coming out of compressor?
nice job, (links are in description) -> Question though, after watching all these mods, Not just yours) and you want to easily check in on the PSI of the tire on your gauge, since you must remove the incoming air from compressor do you use a pressure switch as well as the Slide valve ? Is this correct, 1. check tire PSI by opening the slide valve or also using a pressure switch. thank you for all the links to the parts. and the opinion of the napa compressor. nice write up/video. after 7months my 2780 stopped and customer support was awful. so I troubleshoot, took it apart and replaced the $13. Relay. Wanting a better compressor, its either the Maxitrac air compressor or this 2781 .
As the video shows, all you have to do in order to read the tire’s current psi is slide the valve to the vent position, air will then vent out of the valve and not continue going into the tire, the inline gauge will then give you a PSI reading. No pressure switch was/is necessary. If I could do it again, I may have sold this Smittybilt and gotten a Maxitrac instead of dumping $100 into this Smittybilt to make it work the way it should. The Maxitrac is also double the CFM of the Smitty… Would be interested to see which compressor is more reliable though over time
@@oversizedoverlanding2365 got it , great job .
would have loved to see you attempt to fit the tire before and after bracket removal. nice informative video tho. omw to HD to grab the necessary tools
You can probably make it fit with the brackets but the tire will be canted and not sit flush up against the cross member. Also might not be able to get the tire tight enough either to keep it from moving down the road. Also, those brackets would be smushed against the tire and probably leave indentations on the sidewall. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING AN AIR HAMMER/CHISEL IF POSSIBLE, instead of drill bits. It would require much less effort, time and you wont have to deal with the metal shavings and breaking drill bits.
Truck looks great! Considering the ARB bumper for my 18 Tundra. Is there any sheetmetal cutting to install the bumper. Thanks
Thanks! No metal cutting required however you will have to cut the plastic panels under the headlights as well as the grill surround trim in order to fit winch
Nice Rig! How did you fit your spare tire? 35’s right? Thanks in advance
Thanks! See my other video! But you will need to shave or remove the factory guide brackets
Are you able to remove the grill and corner facia (to change headlights) while keeping the ARB bumper on?
Unsure. Pretty sure the bumper needs to be unbolted/manipulated in order to replace head lamps
How much of a pain in the ass do you think this would be? I’m on the fence about buying one. Looks sick, just don’t want to uninstall bumper for replacing a cracked grill or old lightbulb
@@jaredspink6250 the bumper will not interfere with bulb replacement. it could interfere with replacing the head lamps all together. i would call ARB and ask them if it does.
Called ARB this morning. They said “our engineers would not have designed a bumper that interfered with headlight replacement”. Well… maybe. In order to replace bulbs you gotta pull out the whole headlight assembly, grill, and filler panel below the headlight. Would like to know if this can be done with the bumper on or not.
where is the link that shows the parts used
Look in video description
Thanks for this!
You're welcome, hope it helped!
Did you ever mount the 35 ?
Yup. 35x12.50. Fits fine. About a 1/4” of room between tire and shackles, but I have aftermarket shackles that are thicker than stock.
Can you post a video Did you have to remove the exhaust also ? Thanks in advance
@@onenation7784 i’ll try to post one soon, but there’s lots of tundra forum threads on this with pics. No, no need to remove exhaust
@@onenation7784 I ended up cutting my exhaust pipe afterwards at the last hanger. just preference. I like the look also
I worked in fleet service and we put similar unit on our busses. It looked like a big air hose quick coupler came with a cap in case of leakage.
Can’t beat it!
Oh wow there was snow!!!
Oh yeah! It was beautiful. That one rutted spot gave me trouble. A rear locker would have been really nice, but the traction boards got me thru. I was also on 33s then, so maybe won’t be an issue w 35s now.
@@oversizedoverlanding2365 yea 35s and you are golden! Do you live in that area?
Love the build!!!
Thanks man!! I’ve made a few changes since then but nothing major. Still would like to do rear bumper, snorkel, gears, lockers, and a 12v system. In time…. ;)
@@oversizedoverlanding2365 I’m looking at lockers and gears soon
@@overlandtundras nitro 5.29s for me. I was between arb air lockers and eaton e lockers for a while, but I think the air lockers are the way to go.
@@oversizedoverlanding2365 air lockers and 529s nitro is what I’m going with
@@overlandtundras Gears should be a total game changer for you since you're on 37s.

Great video!
Great video!
Looks like your truck might have the front collision sensor in the Toyota emblem on the grill. If so, any issues with the sensor after the bumper install?
I do have the FCW sensor. No issues after the bumper install
What was your total lift in front?
approx 2.5” lift achieved with the 613 coils in front. Recently added the coachbuilder 0.5 shim to driver side front shock. to fix lean. Fixed lean in rear as well. Driver side is still 1/8” lower than passenger but better than 1/2” lower. Highly recommended doing this. Cheers
Nice job buddy👍🏻
Thanks man! Hope it helped you!
Love what you have done with the truck. Looks great. I have a 2019 Tundra Double Cab with the same ARB bumper, full RCI skids and rock sliders.
Thanks man!! I’m very pleased with it so far!! Did you go with steel or aluminum on the skids?
Quality content here can’t wait for the walk around bro
