I've tried to love my MAC2 3.5 but don't. I like the design of the Magnacut blade, but wish the handle was a hair longer. The motion required to deploy the blade is difficult for my old thumbs. And the thumbstuds suck. The XM-18 3.5 works much better for me.

The reality is if you are using your knife to axe through logs, get an axe. These steels are functionally, for most of us, identical.

A question to everyone!!??? What is arguably ZTs BEST knife they have ever done?? Like ever ever??? For me..and unfortunately i haven't handled every one they have ever made.. but i have handled a few. Own a few to...and from what I've experienced... the 0055 is probably their best model ever... i feel like it was a flex saying " look what we can do"!!!! And honestly haven't ever made anything as cool after... that's what makes me sad.....2013 -2020 ZT was something special.....i don't know what happened in the last 5.. .. but i miss em!!

It wasn't "recently" made known that they use Chinese manufacturing; they openly admit it right on their own website, and it's been there for quite some time.

This knife was purpose designed for mushroom foraging. Might be worth considering when you are assessing it for fidgeting / package opening. I think the reason for the lack of jimping is that the expectation that you will be at the handle when cutting as the mushroom cap will prevent from choking up and could damage the mushroom while cutting.

I field dressed an elk with a spyderco para 3 lw in magnacut and it didn’t dull. I lightly strobed it after and that’s all I’ve had to do and it’s my daily carry for the last year. It’s been amazing in my use

I had the opportunity to carry the PM MAC2 from a fellow YT reviewer of yours. Loved just about everything about it, but I did have difficulty with the deployment for the first time. Sometimes it would kick out no problem. Other times it felt as if I had my fingers on the lockbar. That appears to be just a "me" problem since most people don't seem to have an issue. Both great knives tho!! 👌

Toughness Edge Retention Corrosion Resistance All depends on what you need the knife for. If it just going to go in a display case you don't need much! If you just open letters and clean your finger nails then you don't need much, If you need to cut carboard, rope then D2 two starts to look good. But it all depends on how often you use the knife. My point is this should be another category with Toughness Edge Retention Corrosion Resistance.

I carried a first gen mcnees Mac2 3.5 for a couple of years straight. Had skiffs in it and Justin David made me a set of timascus thumb studs. It was a perfect user only had to be sharpened once the entire time. Only stropped every few days and it was back to like new ok bite with their 20cv.

I just bought one of these and I don’t have a glass breaker, I have a lanyard loop with a flat surface. Overall I like it, but found out I can’t carry it legally. I can carry a pistol, but not this tiny knife . Silly state laws.

Grail-level knives. Fun to see them up close and think about what that level of money can get. Whether it leads me to do so or not is an entirely different story but it is fun to dream.

How was it confirmed that CKF parts are made in China? All I know is that another reviewer said he has a hunch because CKF knives are too precise. That’s not exactly enough evidence to go around saying the parts are Chinese. If true, that would make CKF the Russian version of Cobratec, which isn’t a death knell but only fair for consumers to know. So … do you know on good authority or just speculating because another reviewer suspects it?

Mac 2 3.5" is my next purchase when taxes come in.

My ckf evo is one of my favorite looking knives That I own to be honest. But usually when I start spending that amount of money on knives, they're just for show 😂 that's definitely two good looking knives though.

I’ve decided to return mine unfortunately. I love the fit and finish; very premium build. The close action feels almost hydraulic; lots to love. My problem is the deployment. You can get an excellent deploy with a concentrated, powerful light switch but it fails easily if you don’t give it enough force. Also, I have size large hands and it’s not intuitive to keep my finger off the lock bar which increases the odds of failure. So overall, I have to concentrate a lot to deploy this knife and that is a deal breaker on a flipper only knife for me. Again, beautiful knife - will definitely buy North Mountain Blade knives again - this one just didn’t fit my hand or preferences.

Fwiw i measured my old Gerber Gator knife on a hardness tester at work and it was 63 on the C scale.

My sog terminus xr is cryo treated d2. My fox knives bushman is cryo d2. I love both and use them both daily.

What are machining dies made from to stamp out D2?

Saw a great video from CBRx testing HRC on different Magnacut blades. I was shocked to see the SpyderCo Manix 2 Salt was below 60 HRC. I know there have been SpyderCo Magnacut mules testing around 62 HRC, but I don't think their salt variants are treated that high. This is why I plan to avoid the Magnacut salt series and stick with the Hogue Deka which has tested at or above 62 HRC.

I believe 14c28n was originally developed for use in shaving razors. That explains why the heat treat is relatively simple so that it can be done in mass. As opposed to something like D2, which, as a tool steel, is more optimally done in small batches. 14c28n LOVES a high polished edge. A high polished edge will extend it's edge longevity if the edge angle is appropriate for intended use of the particular knife. I love 14c28n and prefer it to most other stainless steels out there due to it's versatility. Nitro V is very similar to 14c28n, but until recently knives using nitro v were typically in the $100+ category. Nitro V gained it's popularity in the custom and mid tech markets because it's heat treat wasn't as optimal for mass production. Given the rise in popularity of nitro v in the budget knife category recently, I would say that some of these companies have invested in finding a reliable way to heat treat Nitro v in mass. The average everyday knife consumer would never know the difference. As you stated, the biggest difference is it's toughness. That's why Scandinavian knife manufacturers love to use it in their bushcraft style knives.
