Northeast Outpost™ - come along on our adventures in building a rustic off-grid outpost in a corner of the Maine wilderness. All with the help of family, friends, and antique heavy equipment including Case and Oliver crawlers: Hot Potato, Ol’ Blue, and Skinny.
1962 Case 310 crawler dozer getting some love after sitting in the woods for 10 years. “Skinny” #1
Introducing Skinny the narrow gauge 1962 Case 310E crawler dozer and Boots the GMC Yukon 2500. I also give some updates on the blue 1960 Oliver and future plans for the channel.

Will it start? Oliver OC 46 track loader sitting for 10 years with seized injection pump
Просмотров 66 тыс.Год назад
Introducing the Oliver OC 46 tracked loader to the channel. I bought it as part of a package deal with Skinny, the Case 310 crawler dozer parts machine. Neither were running but this Oliver diesel engine was free and spinning. The previous owner told me it has been sitting for at least 10 years. Will it start without an injection pump? Will it run long enough to determine if the engine and hydr...
Fixing Case 310 crawler dozer thrown track “Hot Potato” #2
Просмотров 17 тыс.Год назад
One of the reasons Hot Potato got its nickname is that the left track seems to always want to come off on the front. In this episode I finally figure out the cause and fix it. I check the bearings on the front idler, replace the top roller, replace the bottom rollers, tighten up a bracket, and in the end there is a surprise.
Bulldozer Tree Felling with Case 310 and forestry winch - Northeast Outpost #5

Hot Potato the Case 310 Crawler Dozer and I continue clearing the cabin site, uprooting pine trees and peeling them. I pull these trees down with the forestry winch because I need the stumps out of my way.

Recovering “Hot Potato” the Case 310 bulldozer - Northeast Outpost #4

Pushing a stump into the woods turned into a fiasco. The ground dropped away unexpectedly. The stump went under the blade and the dozer became stuck on top of the stump. In my haste to wiggle the dozer off the stump I ended up throwing the track. (Smack my head). In this video I distill six hours of work to recover “Hot Potato” from the woods into five minutes of highlights. 1960 Case 310 crawl...
Kicking off the season with some logging and debarking - Northeast Outpost #3

This trip was focused on opening up the twitching routes for clearing the cabin site. Mission accomplished, but things ended on a sour note.
Installing Off-grid Gray Water System and Outhouse - Northeast Outpost #2
Просмотров 2923 года назад
Since we will be carrying our water in we don’t need much of a septic system. We installed a small gray water system rated for 25 gallons per day and an outhouse; a “primitive system”. Site clearing with Case 310 Crawler Dozer Septic pit dug with Kubota backhoe
Building an access road with a 1960 Case 310 Crawler Dozer - Northeast Outpost #1
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.3 года назад
Our first project on the 12 acre forest outpost is building a gravel access road using our 1960 Case 310 Crawler Dozer “Hot Potato”. She leaks everything and every fastener wants to vibrate loose. But as long as we keep filling the fluids, injecting grease and tightening bolts she keeps pushing dirt and pulling trees.
Really? You try and remove the master pin with what is essentially a jewellers tappy tap hammer and tiny little pin punch. Then you try and get it out with a jack hammer with a sharpened bit in it. All that would have done is bell out the end of the master pin and made it tighter in the links. The are two ways to get the master pin out. 1: Use a hydraulic press 2: Use a 15-20 lb sledge and a hot drift ( a punch with a handle ) and that requires two people. Of course you may be unlucky and actually get the pin out with that jewellers hammer. That would mean that the pin is worn out will in all probability not stay in. That would mean you have to fit a new pin and that will also mean you need to fit a new master link which will require the aforementioned hydraulic press. As for the bearing blocks. Even though you have managed to tighten the bolts they will, in all probability, come loose again. The bolts only force the plates together, it is the friction between the mating surfaces that actually holds everything together. You need to remove the bearing blocks and clean all rust off the mating faces. The faces also need to be flat, ideally machined flat, otherwise you are only clamping upto high spots, those highspots will give way under load and then you have loose bearing blocks again. With loose bolts. If they are nut and bolt then replace them. If they are threaded into a component then, as a minimum chase the threads with a tap to clean out any rust and loose material. If the threads are worn you need to either plug the holes with weld then redrill and tap them or use something like a helicoil to replace the threads. The problem with loose bolts in threaded components is that loose bolts wobble in the hole. That wobbling wears the threads out of spec. Out of spec threads will not stay tight. Wether or not you do any of the above depends on what sort of life you are expecting to out of the machine. If you are only expecting a few weeks of work out of it then just go for it.
Heat is the finest way to remove stubborn bolts or broken studs .🇬🇧🇮🇪
Sledge hamme,r mate and a drft..
Dang battery, just in the good part. Lol
I have three of these a 52 and 55 and a 57, the 52 and 57 have the loader, the 55 is a bulldozer just like yours. My 57 has the same problem left track always falls off the front idler, my front idler is so worn I'm having problems finding a replacement front
Call it blue bull
Front idler has too much wear on the wear pads. Moves too much left and right
ole blue i think would be a good name
look up zimmerman oliver cletrac for parts and you can get pump rebuilt if you look up hercules dd130 diesel pump. pricey but rare machine in diesel.
Thanks for the tips! The folks at Zimmerman Oliver Cletrac are indeed helpful!
nice
Thanks!

Welcome to the channel. The bucket is supported with a piece of C-channel. It’s not being held up by the pump or the valves.

😂
Skinny needs the love!
Yes, indeed! Quote of the day, "Skinny needs the love!" You can buy the T-shirt here - www.etsy.com/listing/1546851886
You might want to try Area Diesel Service for suggestions on the injector pump. Several RUclips folk use them and they have tons of older/odd stuff
Want more of the Oliver 😊
Welcome to the channel
Yes it do want to c more but it won't b doing if u use all that stuff in can lol
🙂
U want area diesel and have a word
Thank you
Send the injection pump to Area Diesel service and let them take a look.
Thanks for the referral. I’ve been hearing their name a lot!
Did the Oliver cost you same amount as the D2 Cat? I'd like to see your restoration progress on the Oliver track loader. Looks like Ford blue !
Hot Potato (the yellow machine at the beginning of the video) is a Case 310. I bought the Oliver OC 46 together with another Case 310 (a narrow gauge version I call Skinny). I’m currently trying to source an injection pump (or a drive shaft and rotor head) for the Oliver.
She's a runner!
Indeed. Now if we can get her running on her own that’d be swell
Yes
Indeed!
Little bucket
You know what they say, “Little loader, little bucket”. :)
Geezus buddy you were drowning it in ether....you wouldn't even let it come down to an idle...
I know, right? It took me a little bit to figure that out
“Babe the Blue Oliver”
Thanks for the suggestion
Get her running 👍
I will try!
Old Blue
Thanks for the suggestion
Area diesel service can fix thoes pumps google them i think there in iowa !Enough with the ether !
I’d call it green, because yellow and blue make green and it would be fun to see how many people caught the reference lol
😂

Thanks for sharing this! I just watched the whole video. Fantastic!
Starter seemed to work OK. If it starts skipping you might look at changing that shim between it and the bell housing to something thinner if the flywheel will allow more gear engagement.
Yeah, I wasn’t sure it was going to work well since the ring gear looked dinged up. But I’m really pleased with this starter. It was listed as a starter for a New Holland Skid Steer L783 with a Perkins 4-203. I got it for $99 on eBay.
call it blue max
Thanks for the suggestion
les talk more work
🙂 message received
I think the weld on the bracket is insufficient in size. Hope I'm wrong.
I actually ended up increasing the fillet.
Ox is a good name
Thanks for the suggestion
Do a compression test to see if it can run. Then check valve adj. Right?
Not a bad idea. A leak down would be even better
Love those old Oliver's let's see this thing work......
I’ll keep you posted!
Skinny potato
😂 nice!
Paul Bunyon blue ox (BABE)
Thank you for the suggestion
Worth fixing
I hope so!
You only give a diesel a sniff of starter fluid once in a while. You drowned that poor thing, and lucky you didn't lock it up. It takes a lot of cranking to get heat built up in the cylinders to ignite the fuel. Thats why older diesels have pony moters to warm them up before turning on the fuel for them to actually start. Put that either can down for awhile and crank that engine to build up some friction heat, then only like a 1/2 second sniff of either.
You’re right. Took me a little while to figure that out.
Baby Smirf
Nice! Thanks for the suggestion
Would love to see more of this machine getting repaired and back in service. Pacific Northwest hillbilly rebuilt a cat dozer that had a hydraulic pump on the front and squatch253 just rebuilt a d2 cat and did a full restoration of it , and I agree with to others Area diesel service is a good place to send the injector pump.
Thank you for the encouragement and the recommendation!
Babe The Blue OX, Paul Bunyan's ttrusty sidekick.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Old Blue is great name cheers
Thanks for the suggestion
next time use two cans of either and see how that works out for you
😂
Put a pump on it that motor solid 😊
May it be so!
Area Diesel Illinois for your pump
Thank you for lead!
Great video ! I have a camp in Sangerville Maine. I love watching how your improving the land and using great old iron to do it.
Welcome to the channel! Thanks for the encouragement
