I was messing around with Xrd's hitbox viewer when I discovered that Ky's hurtbox during the recovery frames of Charged Stun Edge lifts up above the floor for a few frames. Normally this doesn't make any kind of difference, but Potemkin's Slide Head is low enough to the ground and only active for a couple frames, so if you time the two moves properly then Ky will simply ignore the shockwave and...

    Update: the game released in August and I played through it. It took me about 9.5 hours but if you were more dedicated to finding stuff and progressing then you could probably do it in 8. While the game still had really good music and a few environments that stood out from the usual indie game fare (like the abandoned theme park Demon's Point, or a flooded cavern full of slime and bugs that is technically just one woman's basement), the majority of the game felt like filler simply because the combat wasn't interesting. I thought that fighting the bosses in boss rush mode and going for perfect ranks would be fun, but the bosses have a lot of RNG elements that you can't account for. It's also hard to position your character since you magnetize towards anything you happen to be attacking, so there were cases where I wanted to stand at a very specific distance and hit the boss, but every attack would force me closer and into danger. You can warp to any save point from anywhere, and visiting a save point is the only way to heal (and it also restores your magic meter, even though dying and returning to the save point doesn't?). This ability to teleport across the map combined with every single environment being square islands + narrow bridges meant that it's totally impossible to keep a mental map of anything. It's like Dark Souls 2 on graph paper. The snowy, frozen area was probably my favorite simply because it wasn't too sprawling and because its gameplay hook was an iteration on the bouncing ghosts I described in this video. This was literally the only place in the game where I had to use my brain in order to progress, and where I felt a sense of accomplishment from doing so. I really would have liked more places designed around these types of mechanics instead of the repetitive combat slog the game mostly consists of. When I die, I don't think that it's the next step in a fun challenge, I just get annoyed. The art and characters were the star of the show (one of the bosses is literally a horror movie that comes alive fights you) but I can't truly recommend the game unless you want to support the developer or you thinkt he art style is just that good.

Here's a short version I'll copy and paste: I greatly underestimated the amount and duration of work I was taking on. I am beginning to crawl out of the hole I dug for myself now and I hope to have a more regular content schedule established this year.

    This is entirely unrelated to this video - other than being about Guilty Gear - but I feel like it's been due to mention that I picked up Xrd as a longtime Strive player because of your videos (particularly that set analysis video with Nage and T5M7, and then also the overview of Raven's history in Xrd), and from there I gained momentum and started playing +R as well. Learning how to play I-No in those games has given me a lot of perspective, and I feel like all those comments you've made in your other videos about what "real" Guilty Gear is have become much clearer to me now - as someone who used to mentally roll my eyes upon hearing such things. I still love Strive for what it is and play it often, but I thank you for being my introduction to something entirely different - in a good way. To provide a more productive comment, though, I agree with everyone else that you should probably keep everything to one channel. As a personal request, I wouldn't mind seeing SF6 content.

      It took me a solid few months of intermittent practice to get I-No's IAD combos down (not a joke), so I'm still nowhere near the point where I can nail HCL 6FRC6, haha. Even simple things like Note FRC are eluding me right now. The character is just bad ass in the older games though, so I'm sticking with her through it all.

IADs are tough (sometimes) and I think I-No players kind of wank themselves off about all the crazy inputs they do, but the only thing you need to succeed with I-No is hoverdash j.H and a dimebag. Despite that, she embodies a lot of the free spirit old Gear had. Keep rocking out, man.

    Seeing the pinned comment gave me a bit of inspiration to give my own two cents on the topic, seeing as this video and the discourse are since now long forgotten. The entire point and design philosophy are that you aren't supposed to know who these characters are, as everyone is trying to conceal themselves in some sort of way. If you had to fight them in real life you probably wouldn't even assume that they are fighters (which is pretty bad in the context of a fighting game but i go over that sentiment a bit later) Trying to redesign the characters in a way that makes it more apparent to what they represent would be a bit disingenuous to the base VN. Doing that in a way that doesn't conflict with the source material would probably turn the game into something new entirely. I view melty blood as an aditional piece to the main VN, i think a majority of the fgc community (during that time anyway) viewed melty blood to tsukihime like they viewed persona 4 arena to persona 4 itself. A spinoff of sorts. Its almost like melty blood is a visual novel trying to put on a mask and market itself as a fighting game, compared to taking the P4AU route and just create its own story, whether itc follows the canon or not. Like you said visual novels naturally have much more time to market their characters to you, as opposed to said fighting game. Although i do feel like melty blood is almost a bit of an outlier in this regard, as all your points are valid and in any other situation would make sense. I took a look a Shiki's fandom page and it says there was a year timeskip between the VN and the first Melty Blood game. Nowhere would you know that without going to the games story. (Also P.S, Wouldn't hunching forward be a personality trait though? For example take a look at something like Granblue's belial and his walking animations. He struts forward chest up, stretching out his hands in the air and waves them around. The average person would be able to infer that he's a bit of a snarky asshole flamboyant without needing to know that he's a fallen angel who respects no one. When you look at Satsuki hunching forward and holding her chest i'd expect the average person to think that theres at least something wrong with her. You of course could just say that they could only have guessed that because his regular outfit has his chest out, following the argument of your entire video. And i just wrote an entire paragraph explaining why melty should be exempt from that type of criticism sooooo....)

    Yea no, I want to play as the character I bonded with. I bonded with Akiha in Tsukihime, she's best girl - Id be upset if she looked so different in Melty Blood. Maybe you should just READ THE VN? Wanting stupid complicated designs out of fear of being bland is how you end up with ugly ass typical vtuber designs that are made fun of for a reason, or vomit-inducing Fire Emblem Engage designs (Ivy is hot though (Akiha is hotter though, like literally) ).     After owning both Strive and Xrd, I still prefer it over Strive, I know that Strive improves the character designs (minus a few exceptions) but I still find pulling off combos more satisfying in Xrd. Also the artstyle and animation is amazing even if it is capped at 720p!

      Yeah, 5D6 > 5H 5H > 214K is a burst safe alternative to the 5H 5H > AA grab route. Less damage and excitement gain but the vast majority of people burst on the AA grab so it's nice to use occasionally.

    Over the course of my time playing Xrd and SF6 I have saved hundreds of clips such as these. What do you think the best way to share them is? - Upload them here in larger compilations, like 3-5 minutes long. - Make a separate clips channel and fire them off one at a time. I'm leaning towards the former since managing two channels seems like a pain but a lot of other FGC youtubers do it and it seems to work well for keeping the higher-effort content and the EPIC FUNNY MOMENTS montages separate.

      @@not_cruz3306 It has Denuvo DRM, but the RE Engine is a known factor at this point so there are lots of ways to mod it. The stuff you can't mod is unlocking new costumes/characters without paying for them, but you can recolor or replace existing characters and costumes.

    Great first video on a new topic. I used to try to follow every new indie release but it became too much. For every FTL or Outer Wilds, there's a lot of safe stuff like this. Now instead of asking "So what" for each game, I ask "What's new?"

      That's a good way of thinking about it, and from the new trailer this game just released it seems like the novelty will come from the characters and charm - which is fine by me since that's what I liked the most.

    I've changed my channel name since the "_FGC" branding was making me hesitant about the types of content I produce and how I present the channel. I will definitely continue to talk about fighting games, but I didn't want to prevent myself from making videos that wouldn't align with the FGC. (Also, the FGC is mostly scumbags and degenerates, and not the fun kind. So I don't really want to be associated with them anymore.)

    Scratch wallbounces on counter hit, it has nothing to do with excitement If I recall correctly, the raven cosplayer was Arin, Pidas protege and a threatening upper intermediate Raven player from also from Czechia. He's a really cool dude.

      Ground scratch needs level 2 or 3 excitement to wallbounce (or tumble, if there's no wall) on counter hit, whereas air scratch's wallbounce increases with excitement. I must have been conflating the two or I misspoke. Neat to hear about the cosplayer. Thanks for informing me.

    CHANNEL UPDATE My plans for the future: I have kind of been living in limbo for the last two years but I have finally begun to shake off the dust. I want to focus on shorter, 5-10 minutes videos that are direct responses to direct questions from my viewers. Longer videos have their place, but I just don't have the same undying passion for Xrd that I used to and I want to avoid burnout. I may also branch out into other games. I've been loving SF6 since I started playing it last year and one of my non-FG friends has gotten into the game with me. Splatoon 1, a very important game to me, recently had its official servers shut down, and I have wanted to chronicle the journey of that game's meta and balance as someone who was there from week 1. There are also a lot of cool indie games coming out these days, and I want to highlight some of the better ones I've played. As for why I got burnt out in the first place, read on. Short version: I got the chance to do a really cool collaborative project with That Blasted Salami about Guilty Gear Xrd, and I greatly underestimated the amount and duration of work I was taking on. I am beginning to crawl out of the hole I dug for myself now and I hope to have a more regular content schedule established this year. I think have abused your collective patience for far too long. Long version: In 2021 That Blasted Salami put out a call for video editors, and while I'm not much of an editor I figured it couldn't hurt to reach out. We talked a bit and he invited me to the TBS Discord server where all the channel's work is collaborated across a wide variety of fighting games. It was super cool to be invited into this club and talk shop with a lot of people who have the same passions I do. In 2022 I started work on a series of videos for Guilty Gear Xrd that would go up on the TBS channel: character overviews and an archetypes video. I would do the writing and footage recording, with editing handled by other people. If you are a creative person, you know that this violates the first rule of being successful - never revisit your old work. Things started well enough, but the total script writing and recording time was probably about 6 hours for each character, or upwards of 200 hours. It takes a long time and multiple revisions for good ideas to be sorted from bad ones. There were other factors as well: - I got hired at a real full-time office job in 2022, which took up most of my time. Sadly I was laid off in 2023. - The skills I developed at that job have basically zero transferability, so I have been taking some personal courses to try shifting careers in the meantime. - In 2023 I was jumped and attacked by some violent teenagers, which resulted in a pretty serious injury and several months of talking to police and asking around my neighborhood. I have healed physically and mentally now, but it was very destabilizing to every part of my life. By the end of 2023, I had basically stopped all progress on writing and recording, and the project is now on soft hiatus until I can commit to it for a meaningful length of time (also, SF6 and Teken 8 are dominating the collective attention span of most FG players). More broadly, Strive has killed Guilty Gear and it's never coming back. If I had a penny for every opinion about Guilty Gear I've heard from people who have never played Guilty Gear before the year 2021, I'd be rich. It grinds down at you over time, y'know? I have found it almost impossible to make the same kind of connection I could make playing Xrd offline with people pre-pandemic. At the time, it seemed everyone I met was a maniac who did character-specific okizeme, knew all the different combo variations for every character, and really enjoyed the way the game was. Even if a matchup was stupid, it was still fun. Now, Strive players who win tournaments instantly start moaning about system mechanics and demand patches. Dustloop admins ban you for improving wiki pages because some idiot declared himself King of Frame Data and you aren't allowed to contradict his ESL screed. Time moves on. Scenes change. People move around. I understand that. But it still hurts.

      Really sorry to hear what you have to go through, but im glad you get everything sorted¡, I love your Xrd videos even tho English isnt my first launguage , really has helped me improve on the game , even tho all my friends moved to STRIVE and i cant bring myself to like it, ill be sure to check out your other videos in the future even tho they arent from fighting games at all, ive just started playing blazblue so im exited to see what you bring in the future, stay safe¡

    I disagree, the whole reason I gravitated towards Melty Blood in the first place was because of the plain characters. Plain characters doing flashy magical fighting was an unforgettable contrast that was really cool to me. Also, compared to other fighting games like blaze blue or guilty gear, the plain character designs were a breath of fresh air to the extravagant over the top fighting game designs, Which I consider bland.
