AMOY Quick Stupid Review: Squier Affinity Strat HH - decent for the money. I'm going to destroy it!
Просмотров 34521 день назад
I was looking for a modifiable guitar to be the starting point for an Alex Lifeson Hentor Sportscaster-style super strat. And this thing popped up! It will do. Before I get to making life-altering modifications to it, figured I'd give it a good workout and a review. As with almost all of the Squiers that I've reviewed, this one is good. At least good. Maybe a little better than good? I've reall...
AMOY Quick Stupid Review: Jackson Dinky DS22 7 Review - this guitar made me BLEED!!!
Просмотров 60Месяц назад
Another review that absolutely no one asked for! The Jackson Dinky DS22-7; a cheap ($180-200) 7-string. This guitar was kind of an experiment for me. I just wanted to see if I would enjoy a 7-string after years of only using 6-string guitars. For the money, it's a good guitar... with one huge drawback. Seriously, I don't recall a guitar ever making me bleed prior to this one. The fret sprout wa...
AMOY Quick Stupid Review: Squier Paranormal Jazzmaster XII Review - it's good; depends on your needs
Просмотров 898Месяц назад
I wanted to get a 12-string electric guitar to work on new original songs for the band I'm in (EMP). After some deliberation, I settled on the Squier Paranormal Jazzmaster XII. It's a decent guitar with lots of goodies and very few not-so goodies. For the price, it's hard to beat, but you might want to look at something a bit more pricey if you plan on a 12-string being your main guitar. Please...
AMOY Quick Stupid Review: Harley Benton SC 500 WH Guitar - good guitar, but how cheap is too cheap?
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.3 месяца назад
I've seen a number of reviews of Harley Benton guitars, but I've never had one myself. Now I have one. I bought this guitar specifically because it looks like one of the guitars that was used by Randy Rhoads; namely his white Les Paul Custom. Unlike a Gibson or even an Epiphone, this Harley Benton is unbelievably cheap. I really can't figure out how they can make a guitar this good (it's good, ...

    I got one of these for a GREAT deal.. I got it home and I realized it may not be my cup of tea. I think the sound is very limited- I think only the neck pickup sounds good and it just doesn’t sound all that good with what I do. It’s NOT like an acoustic 12 string, and it will not give you a Byrds type sound like a Ric 12 string. You can’t really dig in and play like Melissa Etheridge. It will sound like mush. I find that you gotta pick lightly.. use light picks. The light strings can easily be drowned out if your are rocking out.. Thought the music I have written on 12 string could transfer to a band format easily, but it kind of is not working out like I thought. Might be selling mine.

      @keithavarney170 День назад

      I agree that it sounds nothing like an acoustic and that it lacks that "jangly" sparkle you'd get from something like a Ric. It has a unique sound. And I'm using the neck pickup almost exclusively, particularly for live stuff. Wonder if changing out the bridge pickup would make much of a difference? I see it as a niche guitar and I've found it to be a good tool for writing and recording. For the price I still think it's good; of course it's $100 off now at Fender - I paid full price 🤣. I'd be curious to know what you end up getting if you sell yours. Thanks for the comment!

      Yeah - like so many other things, it's really subjective. I remember seeing Jonathan Cain from Journey playing one of these live - even then I noticed that the headstock was quite different. Good news is that I like this guitar the more I play it, headstock and all. Thanks so much for the comment!

    Firstly, I'd just like to say that you play beautifully and your Lynch like tone is divine! I'm still shocked by how awesome this so called cheap lil "beginner's guitar" is. I bought the SSS HT version in Torino Red for a joke. Didn't need any fret work and the nut was slotted perfectly. It has quite a chunky C neck too. I tweaked the truss rod, lowered the action and got it playing with .60./40 action with no fret buzz or dead notes anywhere. The hardware works perfectly and I still can't find a single thing to complain about. It's actually so much fun to play and it's tonally perfect for what I do, it's left me wondering why I'd spent thousands on higher end guitars. I can fly around on this Squier model effortlessly. It really does live up to the hype

      Thanks so much! Yeah, I have this one and the Sonic P-Bass; just really impressed with the quality coming from overseas these days. I'm sure that the computerization and automation of the production process has improved quality considerably, but I'm also convinced that guitar companies (Fender/Squier in particular) are also investing in training their employees and providing higher quality control. It's as if they've discovered that they can create quality products at very reasonable prices. Who knew?!?! 🤣🤘🎸

    I bought one just like yours and have been very happy with it. I traded in my Squier HSS Bullet Strat because I couldn't use the SS pickups on our church platform without them picking up a lot of noise. I loved that Bullet, but now the Squier Affinity HH Strat is totally playable without the electronic noise interference. Sounds good and plays well. Slide playing works well too. :-)

      @@peadookie Okay… been searching around the web and I can’t find anything that says that necks (Fender in particular) were tinted in the 70s. I found lots of info about different types of finishes causing the natural wood finish to age faster. Experienced this myself with a 1994 P-Bass that has aged… gracefully. If the necks were “in fact” tinted in the 70s, I’m going to need some reference to back that up with. I’ll be the first to raise my hand up and say “that’s the way it was” if I see some evidence. Unfortunately, everything I see is on forums, where people pretty much say whatever they want. Fender also has nothing to say on historical tinting in this article: www.fender.com/articles/behind-the-scenes/the-science-and-style-of-finishes Here are a few other links I found on the subject. Absolutely nothing definitive in there 😁 www.tdpri.com/threads/old-fender-necks-were-they-tinted-to-begin-with.69955/ www.strat-talk.com/threads/natural-finish-on-neck-and-bodies-yellowing-coloring-with-age.565324/ Please do let me know if you find any information about Fender tinting necks in the 70s 👍

    For those looking for a quality 12 string without the prohibitive price tag, I suggest investigating the Reverend Airwave 12. It's a semi hollow Korina body design, engineered from the "blueprint" to be a 12 string. it's more of a mid priced model but it needs NOTHING. Individual intonation and locking tuners - STANDARD.

    can I oil the fretboard like a rosewood? or is it shellacked over

    • @keithavarney170
      @keithavarney170 Месяц назад

      That is a very good question and I don't have a solid answer for you. Consensus on forums is mixed (surprise!). The specs on Charvel's site simply list the fretboard as "Carmelized Maple" and it does not feel like it has any finish - the back of the neck does have a light urethane rub. I have not oiled mine at this point; I generally don't oil maple fretboards but this is my first carmelized/roasted neck. I would check directly with Charvel/Fender on this one - might do that myself! Sorry I didn't have a confident answer for you. I will let you know if I hear back from them. Thanks!

    FYI those are not P90's they are Jazzmaster pickups ( but the stock bridge being much hotter than a traditional JM pup). P90's and JM pickups are very different in sound and design. You can get JM sized P90's though if that is what you are after and it would be a much rounder aggressive tone than the stock JM pups. It is a common misconception by the way.

    • @keithavarney170

      Interesting! I just assumed because of the look they were P90s. Live and learn! Fender simply has them listed as Fender Designed Alnico Single-Coil pickups. Good news is now I need another guitar so I can have some P90s. 👍

    • @Klorpus
      @Klorpus День назад

      @@keithavarney170 These guitars have kind of hybrid pickups. The coils are Jazzmaster sized (very wide across, but very thin top-to-bottom). They have magnets underneath the coils rather than the original magnetic polepieces the Fender single coil designs use. They're rather hot. Additionally, the pickups have foam underneath to raise them rather than springs like the original Fender units use. To give better clarity and balance with the bridge pickup, pull it out and trim the foam down so you can lower it further, or remove the foam entirely and put Jazzmaster pickup springs in. Some of the serious gear tweakers are swapping in aftermarket 1960s-spec Jazzmaster replacement pickups.

      Yes... but I would recommend, for a beginner, to go to a local music store and try out some guitars before buying. The problem with Harley Bentons, in the US at least, is that they have to be ordered from Europe and the shipping cost is a fair percent of the total cost of the instrument. You can find a $200 Squier at most music stores in the US and they are GREAT instruments for beginners. If you are in Europe, then this would definitely be a good guitar for a beginner.

I´ve seen your unboxing and review video and decided to buy me this one pink HT single humbucker one. And also im living in Germany, i got the same condition. Guitar was ready to play from unboxing, just tune the strings and go. Great fretwork, no optical mistakes or bumps, neck is pretty good, actually amazing for this price (i got this guitar from thomann for 169 € , ca. 180 $) if i read comments on "cheap" guitar reviews, it seems that people expect way more from cheap guitar as from fender or gibson, and yet some guitars are truly overprized , you can get a really bad Fender Player for almost 1000 bucks, and nobody is talking about that. but same people are screaming when they get untuned Squier...

    Either Squier have improved their quality control or you got a bad example. I picked up an Affinity PJ bass recently because I was impressed by how well made it was and how playable. Sure, I can see where money has been saved, but I have no problem at all with build quality or the sound - the pickups are ceramic but remarkably aggressive and responsive - which has been much improved by a good set of flats. Perhaps you should revisit this review with a different example ?

      Yeah - I just un-lucked into a bad one. I should have returned it. It's the only Squier I've ever gotten that disappointed. There are some other Squier reviews I've done that are much more positive, including one for the Sonic P-Bass - I've even used that one recently for band practice!

      @@keithavarney170 I must admit that I'd only buy a bass that I've actually had in my hands and played, if only to be sure I'm not getting a "Friday afternoon special" like you got. But here's the thing - both of my Squiers (CV jazz bass and Affinity PJ bass) are much better made instruments than my rather valuable 60's classic bass, even though Squier/Fender market them as "beginners" basses. Modern manufacturing techniques have really improved what you can buy for a modest amount of money these days.

    Great video, Keith! After watching it i decided to buy one. So, i was watching your channel lately and I´ve noticed that Sonic is hanging behind you at the wall, have you already put new humbucker or did some modding work? (sorry for my english, i´m from Germany). I waiting for exact same guitar it will arrive next week, i plan to mod this baby, so i got new bridge, locking tuners, EMG81 humbucker set, locking tree, knobs, jack plate, strap buttons etc.

      I did finally change the pickup. I put a Seymour Duncan 59 Custom Hybrid in place of the original ceramic pickup. Seems to have tamed it a bit - it's clearer and noticeably less harsh now. I love what you are talking about doing to yours! Sounds like it will be a real rocket. I've enjoyed mine very much.

      Yeah, honestly was taking a shot in the dark based on what they listed. Which made no sense anyway LOL. I like whatever it is, I just wish they would take the few seconds to list it in the specs. Just did a quick google search for "Chinese mahogany wood" and Toona sinensis came up, which is used in "musical instruments such as guitars". I'm just unnecessarily obsessed with them getting the specs right 🤣🤘

    I have two of these. Bought new from my local shop. Still bone stock. They made them perfect so I kept them that way. I just don't get people modding these, it kills me. It's like buying something that's already perfect and then fucking it up by changing shit. As far as the price i I think it's good for what you get. I've never had any issues with mine,never had to have work done or anything.

      First one to admit that I’m an idiot. I have terminal mod disease (TMD). Completely agree that these are plenty fine right out of the box. Charvel is really nailing it these days!

      These guitars don't need any mods for sure, and have everything you need. Used mine on a fair amount of gigs with no problems so far. Since our gigs are occasionally 1 to 2 hours away, I just take a real cool Fender USA SSH Strat as a back-up, but haven't had to break it out so far.

      @@keithavarney170 I cure my TMD with GAS, ha. I got way too many gee-tars, but I pretty much have just about everything covered other than Filtertron Rockabilly or Rickenbacker jangley tones. I do have those close enough in several other guitars. I'm looking for those when I'm out and about, but every Gretsch or other Filtertron equipped guitar I play seems to fall short in some area, thus so far I haven't thrown down on one yet. The Rickenbackers are in short supply and usually overpriced. I'd like a fireglo 330 one of these days, just love the body shape. I did have a 360 12 string in mapleglo back in the day, but my first wife messed up our finances bad at the time, so sold it to keep the family afloat. Strolling down memory lane, ha.

    • @keithavarney170
      @keithavarney170 4 месяца назад

      I really don't know - seriously. I think... if you're starting from scratch, practice at least an hour a day, you can be playing songs in a few weeks to a couple of a months. Honestly, everyone is different and learns at a different pace. Personally, I started out as a young teenager playing an acoustic guitar. Heavy strings. Learned all the basic chords - A, C, D, E, G. I can say - for sure - that had I kept up a regular practice schedule, I would be a more solid player today!

    It's too bad that the guitar doesn't come in a white color with a black pickguard and a laurel fretboard (I call it cheapo rosewood!!! LOL😅)!!!😮 If Squier did make one!!! I'd buy it in a heartbeat!!!! It would be my cheap skate Jake E. Lee "Whitey" guitar!!!! I would spray paint the headstock white to match the body and buy Schaller tuning pegs and a Seymour Duncan JB and a 500k volume pot!!! To modify the guitar!!!! 😅😄😃😄😃😁
