Sometimes you have to go backwards to fill the sails #motivation #ourladydefiant #yachtracing
We were so close to the finish line you could spit at it! And then the wind shut down, the boat spun 180 degrees in the wrong direction, and so why not finish in reverse!
The Richmond Yacht Club often times rewards creativity in their beercan races, so I figured I'd give it a shot. It went over well, and while we weren't awarded a prize bottle of wine, we received high accolades for our creativity.
I've proposed a change to the racing rules, which is that motoring is not allowed... unless it's in reverse.

I'm trying to get our latest one out some time soon, but we've been busy re-bedding the keel and getting new rigging. I know! It sucked, but the cove is fairly narrow and surrounded by rocks, so I wouldn't have wanted to leave in the dark on our first time exploring it. Also, there's that voice inside your head when you're warm in bed (rocking back and forth) that keeps saying, "I'm sure it'll start to calm down any minute now... the wind died hours ago!" I think if I were to go there again and the mooring balls are still out of order, I'd set an anchor such that we could tie a stern line to a mooring ball and be bow into the swell. Then we wouldn't be dependent on the ball to hold us fully, but it would at least hold us in the right orientation.

      Yep, that's definitely a good idea! Also, at that moment you're likely going down wind, so you'd want a fair bit of slack in the outhaul for performance. If we were racing, that would have been done already out of the competitive spirit 😁 but because we were just cruising, we weren't being as particular about trim.

    Damn nice, laid up with some stomach flu and horrible gusty spring weather here in stockholm. So searching for nice sailing to cheer me up :) I have a boat related question, I noticed that the line from the kick goes directly from the low attach point to cockpit. It was the same on my boat and i noticed it when i mounted the lines one spring. I had no mainsail mounted and anyway i tensioned the line and the boom moved to port. I am not sure so that might be the question, this is then the second raceboat where this is ignored - was I overly cautious to move the final block to the mast collar below the kick? Just curious trying to learn :)

    • @OurLadyDefiant
      @OurLadyDefiant 2 месяца назад

      Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you feel better! If you’re sick, I’m sure you’ve found our other videos too. I hope they’re good sick-time entertainment. Regarding the kicker, you’re making a good point re the tendency to pull to one side if you send the line through an off-center deck organizer. We haven’t noticed any negative effects just because the line exits the kicker so close to the goose neck pivot point, but I’m sure there’s some tension/slack that occurs on one tack versus the other. Like I said, we haven’t noticed enough to make us change it. I have seen other boats run an adjustment line to each side of the cabin-top, and I bet that would alleviate that effect. In the end, I don’t think it’s cost us much… at least not as much as a bad tack or a bad decision.

    The jib would tack easier if she wouldn't tail with the line through the self tailer. It creates much more drag on the sheet. With a small jib like the one you were carrying, pulling the jib tight as possible then putting the sheet in the selftailer would help with keeping the jib off the stancheons and speed up the tacks helping to maintain more boatspeed. Just an observation. Nice race and good patience with maneuvers and tactics.

    • @OurLadyDefiant
      @OurLadyDefiant 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for the input! We’ve tried both ways of doing it, and at least for double-handing we found that the time it takes to wrap the line into the jaws and then do the final trim is a pretty big loss of time out of good trim. With the line in the jaws already you don’t lose any time between pulling and the final little grind in. I’m sure we’ll keep trying both methods to test what’s faster, but that’s the thinking behind starting the tack with the new working sheet in the jaws already.

      @@OurLadyDefiant my guess is that you will have to cut it off. I would bet that after you remove all the keel bolts it will not even move. I saw them try to remove a keel once at Svendsen’s. Getting the bolts off was no problem but after doing that, they pounded on it with a big hammer and then ran into it with a forklift! They then got a sawsall.

    • @OurLadyDefiant
      @OurLadyDefiant 4 месяца назад

      @@danknox9986 lol, yes, this is what I’ve been warned about. If it comes down to sawing through the keel bolts I may think twice about full removal. We’re just trying to fix one or two leaking keel bolts, not any kind of structural issue. We want to prevent crevice corrosion from trapped water next to the keel bolt. If our goal is to protect the keel bolts long term, then cutting them is antithetical to that… but we’ll see!

    I got curious about vang sheeting (keeping leech tension, but easing main to leward in heavy wind) versus traveler-to-windward sheeting (my own made up name, but keeping the traveler to windward and easing the mainsheet in heavy wind, keeping boom at center line but allowing the head of the main to twist open). In particular I looked at a forum post and an article: Forum: www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f90/vang-sheeting-133534-2.html Article: www.sailingbreezes.com/sailing_breezes_current/articles/Aug00/dell0800.htm In the course of reading the two I realized 1) people in forums tend tend to talk past one another...I generally hate forums, and 2) that the distinction between the two styles of sheeting tend to turn on whether you have an adjustable backstay or not. If you DON'T have an adjustable backstay, the primary way of inducing mast bend is through a tight leach on the main. In heavy air you want as much mast bend as you can get to reduce the depth of cord in the mid to upper body of the sail. To maintain that leach tension, the vang can be used to keep the boom low, even as you ease the sheet out to create a small bubble/stall in the front of the main. The best example I can think of is sailing a Laser where mast bend is induced entirely through leach tension. If you DO have an adjustable backstay, that's what you use to control mast bend and the depth of cord in the mid to upper section of the main (as well as forestay tension/sag). Often times as well, if a boat has an adjustable backstay, they usually also have a traveler of some kind. If you have both an adjustable backstay and a traveler, the preferred heavy-weather method of depowering the main in a beat to weather seems to be what I describe in my video: move the traveler to windward, keep the backstay tension on, ease the mainsheet until the boom is at centerline or a little lower, and the result will be that you open up the head with more twist, thereby depowering the head of the main. As I mention in the video, the lower portion of the main (also closer to the fulcrum of the healing... the water line) you can keep the sail more powered up to assist with punching through chop, while not inducing heel. The other thing I like about this is that if you're between gusts you can go bow-down just a bit and power up a larger section of the main, and then when hit by a gust you can allow the boat to come up and as that occurs the main will depower from the top down as you point higher and higher. I hope this helps answer a bit of the question I raised in the video. Both methods seem to be valid methods of controlling a boat in heavy weather, but depending on what functionality the boat has, and how the boat is designed to be sailed. As usual the answer to which method is better is: it depends on your boat. To gripe a little here at the end, the reason I don't like forums is because many people in there believe there's one piece of knowledge that is true for all. It's often an overly-simplistic conclusion you find. At the end of the day (if you're racing at least), the only truth is VMG. If you have a method of trimming that gets you to the mark before other people, congratulations: you found the right answer. The method of reaching that answer is to try everything, be open minded, and test weird stuff. So go get out there, and get weird!

    Lewmar windlass' are definitely not designed to be in wet environment, not sure any are but deck mounted. My Lewmar windlass has been good for many years, but isn't in the anchor chain locker. I'm surprised J Boats would install this windlass in this location. If you can't find a replacement thru deck windlass is designed to withstand wet environment, maybe building a box around it with removable door would be effective. Any other J133 owners have similar experiences?

    • @OurLadyDefiant
      @OurLadyDefiant 4 месяца назад

      It's less a J/Boats issue as opposed to a Lewmar issue. I did the instal myself, and did a good/correct job at it, and the windlass is designed to have the motor in the anchor locker. I think they used an off-the-shelf, non marinized motor, and the result is that it rusted and died quickly. the thumbnail is the original, and as you can see the outer case is rusting, the terminals, the inside, etc. They need to use a motor that's fit for that salty environment, or they need to do what I did, and apply a coating and re-engineer certain things so that the salt environment doesn't destroy the motor.

If you're able and willing, could you let me know what the thought process is behind that method? Was this a non- Spinnaker race or wind too strong for spinnakers? Can non- members of RYC participate in these races?

      Yes anyone can race. Spinnakers can be used but don’t have to be.

      We were technically in the spinnaker class for boats over 30 ft., but we decided not to hoist after a hectic start and beat to windward. We didn't have a full and experienced crew on-board, and with wind in the low to mid 20s, I didn't feel confident in our ability to be successful. Also, it's a beercan, so I tend not to want to do anything too stressful. If you want to read one of the funniest deeds of gift you've ever read, check out the RYC Beercan Deed of Gift here: www.richmondyc.org/files/Beer%20Can%20Deed%20of%20Gift.pdf

      We're back up in the bay now, but thanks for mentioning it. Are you associated with a loft, or are you independent?

      @@OurLadyDefiant Just an old geezer who had good experiences with the Ullman loft just outside Ventura harbor.

      @@petercaras3696 We did end up going to an Ullman loft, but I think it was in further south... maybe in Newport Beach... not sure. Thanks for the tip though. We had a really good experience with the Ullman loft we went to as well. I feel like they're generally a good group wherever you find them.

    I’m fairly proud of our engine warning stickers at 4:20, and no one has mentioned those yet, so I’m calling it out!

    Nice work. great narrative, great crew work. eventually you might benefit from some newer rags but the boat seems to go. keep it up!

      Thank you! We’re hopefully putting out something unique on here. I got kinda tired of what I was seeing from other channels, so we decided to put out what we’d enjoy watching. A new asym and a new main are on our list for the coming year. She still moves along fairly well but I’d love to get a bit better shape out of the sails without as much fuss.

      This is great, peter gustafsson put up an entire race a couple of years ago, entirely raw, not even comments just him and the crew shouting in swedish, been looking for that kind of content ever since :)

      @@osten_petersson That's hilarious! Do you speak Swedish? We had our first beercan of the season just a couple weeks ago with 25-28 true (32-35 on the sails/across the deck), and it was a mess! I'm putting it together at my leisure, but that'll be up eventually.
