Driftwood Didge back on Lossiemouth Beach
I harvested this stick 2 months ago from an amazing twisted driftwood branch on a beach in the North of Scotland. After going to buy a saw, removing a length, driving it back to Derbyshire, and working on it for weeks, we're now back. The bit of wood on the right of shot is where I cut the stick from two months ago.
Material is obviously unknown, but sweet chestnut is one candidate, as it can grow in a twisted pattern. Key F/F#. The reverberation is quite spectacular, it's a very big sound and remarkably bassy for a high pitch. I don't know how well that comes across via this small lavalier mic.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery which I'll probably keep for ever.

Christian Testimonial (Lovely Long B made October 2022)
Просмотров 69Год назад
Christian came up at the end of October 2022 for a one-day didgeridoo making workshop. We started with a walk early in the morning and found a lovely fallen branch from a beech tree, identified and cut a good section, brought it back to base, shaped, cut, and spent most of the day carving out the two halves with gouges. Although Christian originally had a more traditional, slightly higher pitch...

How to Play Deep Didgeridoos
Просмотров 1074 года назад
In this short lesson, I explain what I discovered while learning to play long, deep didgeridoos (from low B-flat to low G). It is important to warm up the interior of the didge, learn to catch the drone (even if only briefly), then use a much gentler "squeezing" circular breathing motion so that you don't expel too much air too quickly, particularly when catching the pressure again with lung air.
#2016: A long, deep didgeridoo in low G/G#

The deepest didgeridoo I have made to date, and a very satisfying instrument to play, although its very low tone presents a challenge. Not recommended for beginners!

This is a gorgeous, long, deep didgeridoo, with a long straight taper for most of its length going into a generous bell for extra backpressure and volume. This is a delight to play, but challenging so not recommended for beginners!

A quick introduction to some of the main ways you can make the didgeridoo produce different sounds, including breathing pattern, tongue position, and vocalisation.
How to Play the Didgeridoo: Lesson #2 - Circular Breathing
Просмотров 2344 года назад
Circular breathing is the term that describes the way a didgeridoo player can play without stopping, keeping the didge vibrating constantly. It is not, as the same might suggest, a magical way of breathing in and out at the same time, but a technique that uses air stored in the cheeks to keep the buzz going while the player takes a sharp in-breath through the nose.
How to Play the Didgeridoo: Lesson #1 - The basic Drone
Просмотров 4764 года назад
The drone is the natural, fundamental low sound that comes through the didgeridoo and should be the first sound that a beginner tries to get out of the instrument. This short video gives you the basic tips you need to know to play a drone on your didge.

This didgeridoo came from a tree in our garden that died after its bark was stripped by goats! I noticed the large bell and decided to cut the tree for a didgeridoo. The result is a very easy playing and versatile D#.

Hi, this is Ben (other account). Yes, I'm sure it would get at least one, but I think I may have cut this one down to a shorter length now, to make it more playable.

Heyo! I liked your teaching method. I forgot to relax & breathe. Had gotten so worked up, trying to practice :D So I got to a place where I can fill my cheeks & spit the air out, while inhaling. But I can't seem to get a drone sound.. It is like a sharper exhalation, like I'm imitating a fart. How do I get the drone sound going while I circular breathe? Do I not have enough pressure in mouth cavity (vs. Lungs)?

If your didge has any cracks or holes that might make it difficult to produce a good drone sound. Check by running your palm down the sides as you try to play and see if you can detect any air escaping. If you find any cracks, you might fill with wood glue or beeswas.
