Old to New Restorations
Великобритания
Добавлен 21 фев 2019
I love to take beaten, worn out, rusty antique and vintage tools and equipment and make them like new again. Where possible, I try to be sympathetic and use tools and techniques that fit the era of what I'm restoring. Rather than creating perfect museum pieces, I try and make things functional again so they can once again be used as they were meant to be.
Generally, I'm interested in restoring things that are really on the brink of being junk - things that are seized up, broken, unusable and too ugly to be decorative - I actually like old things to have some patina and a visible history, so I look for things that are beyond that!

Vintage Brass Blowtorch Restored and Tested - A Slightly Imperfect Restoration!
I picked up this unwanted and unloved vintage brass blowtorch (Monitor no 26) at an auction some time back and decided it needed some love!
It seemed complete and intact and mainly in need of some good cleaning and replacing of any seals. The pressure pump wasn't working, no doubt because the leather cup washer had dried out (almost inevitable at this age) but I was confident that this little blowlamp could be brought back to life easily enough.
I took the torch apart first of all, then cleaned all the brass parts - firstly with white spirits and then with ketchup! Ketchup is actually a great brass cleaner and really cuts through the worst of the dirt and patina. With the worst of the dirt ...

Old Cracked Wood Plane Brought Back To Life - Sympathetic Restoration
Просмотров 4 тыс.2 года назад
I'm expanding my vintage hand tool collection - and the latest restoration is this old Marples wooden jack plane. Unlike my past restorations, I'm not going to do a 'perfect' restoration on this plane - I want to keep the patina and let it wear its age with pride! Instead, I'll be cleaning it up and getting the worst of the grime off the body, removing the rust from the metal parts and resharpe...
Rusty Knife Restoration - Vintage 'Fame' Butcher Knife Brought Back to Life
Просмотров 7602 года назад
I got this random knife as part of an auction lot last year. Looking at it more closely, I found a makers stamp on it; 'Fame' by S & J Kitchen. It's hard to tell the age exactly - the company traded for around a hundred years - but I'd guess it was made somewhere in the middle of last century. While in reasonable shape, it definitely needed some work; the blade was rusty and the edge chipped, a...
Restoration of Battered Antique Railway Oil Lamp
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.3 года назад
This oil (paraffin) lamp was once used as a locomotive cabin lantern - according to the stamp, belonging to North Eastern Railway. That railway existed until 1922, making this lamp around a hundred years old, or possibly even older. It looks like it's had a hard life in the intervening years! The tank had come apart at some point and the resulting leak had gummed everything together. So my firs...
Antique Brass Postage Scales Restoration & Repair
Просмотров 25 тыс.3 года назад
A lovely old set of antique (Edwardian, as far as I can make out) brass and wood postage scales, sadly neglected. It was time to give them the care they need! After stripping everything down, I stripped off the old finish from the base before sanding, staining and applying shellac to recreate the original coating. I had to learn how to do french polishing as I went, but I'm fairly happy with th...
Whitmore Carpenter's Vice Restoration - Rusty, Seized & Neglected!
Просмотров 29 тыс.3 года назад
I'd been looking for a small vice for some of my projects for a while now, when I came across this at an auction. I think I paid £2 for it! It was severely neglected and seized up from rust. So after soaking it with some oil for a while, I managed to get it apart, then cleaned everything up. Aside from the rust, there wasn't much functionally wrong with it, so I got it repainted and all the bar...
Restoration of Vintage Engineers Desk Lamp - Saved from the Scrap Pile!
Просмотров 31 тыс.3 года назад
I got this old engineer's desk lamp as part of an auction lot. It was so rusty and in such poor shape I nearly tossed it - but thought it would make a decent restoration project! It was badly seized, so taking the thing apart took a fair amount of time and effort and left a big pile of rust flakes - but I was victorious! Once apart, I removed all the rust and old paint, filled in the rust pits ...
Rusty Vintage 'Bon Clou' Can Opener Restoration
Просмотров 23 тыс.3 года назад
I found this 'Bon Clou' can opener in the bottom of a box of auction tools I bought a few months back. It was in a pretty sorry state, and I nearly threw it out! But I decided it was worth a second chance, so I went ahead and started the restoration. My original plan was to polish all the rust pits out of the sides, but once I cleaned it all up, I realised that wasn't going to be possible - it ...
Rusty Carpenter's Try Square Restoration
Просмотров 17 тыс.3 года назад
For this restoration, I found this old carpenter's try square. It was in a fairly sorry state, but still intact and functional - so a great little restoration project! I took the square apart - destroying the pins in the process - and then cleaned up, derusted and zinc plated the metal blade. Then I sanded down and repaired the wooden handle. Unfortunately sanding it down made it a little thinn...
Battered and Bent Vintage Screwdriver Restoration - Mirror Finish!
Просмотров 11 тыс.3 года назад
I got this battered and bent old cabinet screwdriver at an auction a while ago. I figured it was worth saving! I have no idea how old it is, but clearly it's had a hard life in recent years. The shaft had a nasty bend in it, it was covered in paint and the tip was rounded off. I pulled it apart, then spent some time heating it up and bending the shaft straight again. Then I annealed it, sanded ...
Restoring a 1950s Vintage Tilley Lamp
Просмотров 18 тыс.3 года назад
I got this old 1950s Tilley X246A paraffin (kerosene) pressure lamp at an auction a while back, and thought it would make a decent restoration project. I was tempted to go all in on it and strip off the paint etc, but the lamp wasn't in bad shape. I like things to have a bit of wear and history to them, so I decided to just polish it up, replace the seals and get it cleaned up and working again...
Can These Household Goods Polish Brass? Let's Find Out!
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 года назад
When I published my first video on here - the brass bell restoration - I got a few comments about different ways to polish brass. Some I'd heard of - lime juice, for example - and others were completely new to me, such as tamarind paste. So, I thought I'd give all these a try and see how well they all worked! So I got together a few things to try: lime juice, tamarind paste, WD-40, tomato ketch...
Restoration of Rusty Vintage Oil/Paraffin Lamp
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.3 года назад
I got this pair of lamps on eBay a little while back. I don't know much about them, beyond that they were in a pretty sorry state! I would guess they're around 100-150 years old, but that's just a guess. The design is curious, too; what were they used for? I'd have thought some sort of bicycle lamp, but those are usually coloured. Railway lamps are usually bigger and have glass on multiple side...
Vintage Rusty Flame Thrower Restoration (okay, it's a weed burner...)
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
I picked up this rusty old vintage weed burner at an auction last summer. Nobody else wanted it and I wasn't even totally sure what it was, but the price was right! It was rusty and looked fit only for the scrap pile, but after looking it over I figured it was good enough to at least try to save it. So I stripped it all down, removed all the rust using electrolysis and got to work restoring it....
Antique Brass Bell Restoration
Просмотров 109 тыс.5 лет назад
Restoring an antique brass bell I picked up on eBay. I don't know what it was coated with, but it took some serious polishing to bring it back to life! Not the most complicated restoration ever I know, the idea here was for me to get the hang of doing videos - camera angles etc. This is my first RUclips video, hopefully of many more to come. I hope you enjoy it regardless! I don't claim to be a...
