I wish they would bring it back
I replaced my 71 1.7 rusty heat exchangers with SS back in the early 90s. Should have saved to money for the hell hole repair instead. ;) Any thoughts on rust mitigation and treatment for a decent set on my 74 2.0? Just can’t convince myself the cost for the SS upgrade is worth it.
Great video Thomas! I think the bodywork alignment at the front is not worse than it came from the factory. My car has its gaps too… Are you going to paint the car yourself?
@@rikkoenen2997 yes I do my own paint work. The gap tolerance from the factory was not as tight as say a 911. That being said, if you have noticeable difference side to side, it may be due to an accident, and often can be tweaked.
Nice video! Thanks for your expertise. But Fuchs wheels are soooooo boring… IMHO. Baby Fuchs fit the /4 better, or Mahles, or Pedrinis, or BBS
Großartiges Thema für Porsche - Liebhaber!
Nice paint work on the 914.
With the longer intake manifolds. You may need to turn up the idle. That is if you like performance take off. Try 1700 rpm. But that does not make it a daily driver. More for racing the motor instead. That was my experience with these manifolds.
Damn that motor sounds beautiful!!!
Spends 20mins noting Porsche never really sold a car with a badge, proceeds to add badge to car. Fill the holes, and put some rocker panels on the car…

Vielen Dank für diese tiefen Einblicke in die rostigen Seiten des 914. Wie sagt man in Deutschland so treffend: Alte Liebe rostet nicht!
Check the date on that QR badge article. April fool’s day :)
@@krisdecreton4243 Thank goodness!
Looks to me that you make a line from the top right of the left headlight to the bottom left of the right headlight line where it meets the bumper, and vice versa, creating an x shape, which will give you the centre point for the badge placement. That looks like what they did to me.
Ein seht guter und spannender Beitrag!
Nice topic that you investigated 👍🏻 😅
Love your videos. Nice research on badge placement. I apparently didn’t go far enough. When I found the 80mm notion I went and measured 911’s of that era (non long hoods) circa ‘74 - ‘80s all were 80mm so I put mine on that way. Either way, it’s a customization choice and the car deserves it. Btw I love your yard signage, too.
@@vwfanatic2390 thanks man!
I plugged one in on my 240z and it made the car come alive! by far the best upgrade I’ve made to the vehicle.

Like your calm and gentle approach and the rabbit. Thanks Andy (France)
You probably already know this, but there are only 2 914’s that came from the factory which the Porsche crest. The only 914-8, and Ferdinand Piech’s 914-6. Theirs were installed using the same measurements of the G body 911’s, 80mm from the edge of the hood to the tip of the crest. It’s nice to see your restoration progression. I will have to restrain myself from mission creep, when I go to add the bracing for the conversion to a 2.2L 911t engine I’m rebuilding for my ‘75 914. I don’t have the budget or the time to do a full restoration no matter how much I will want to. There is fortunately no structural rust, so ospho and paint is all she’s going to get for now. Getting her on the road with that flat 6 orchestra blaring in my ears as soon as possible, is the mission.
I've just the same problem and elusion, haha.
I have restored 3 Porsche 914s, love those cars!!! If you have questions let me know!
Is this blue a factory colour?
No, it’s a special mix.
I have always liked the stock 914 exhaust.
Great, calming video ~ despite the imagined drain on my poor savings account .Some other things to add to a shopping list are a few ( NOT inexpensive ) specialized assembly tools and an engine stand. Also the use of a test-stand is crucial ( rental ?) or you have build one yourself. Ah, the list grows...
Music too loud compared to your commentary

When I was doing this on a Porsche 356 restoration I felt like a cancer surgeon searching for a cancer free margin of the tumor.
That is a really interesting video, thanks for taking so much trouble. I have been trying everywhere to find the dimensions of the original and up grade batteries. All my questions solved with one video. I like the idea of the camera and light inside the engine bay to check the height, very clever.

Hello Thomas Otten, First let me introduce myself, I am Rolf M.Mol. Also a member of the Otten family, haha. You encourage me to pick up my old love again. I've had a 914 on the bridge for years (33) and every now and then I look at it. The body isn't in that bad shape, fortunately. If we keep in touch, that will encourage me to roll up my sleeves. Kind regards, Rolf M.Mol The Netherlands.
Hallo Rolf, Vielen Dank. Keep in touch!
I have one to do in a month or so. These two videos have helped me greatly. I really appreciate you taking the time and not leaving anything out, even if it meant you had to go rework something to make it right. A+ for you sir!
Need to include the cost of the oil pump inspection, oil coolers being professionally cleaned and pressure checked and oil lines cleaned or replaced replaced. Would not want to get any old contaminated oil into a new engine. Nice video.
