    I was working for American at their Cary, NC call center on this day. When Flt. 11 was hijacked, flight attendant Betty Ong used the skyphone and ended up getting our call center. An agent a month out of training took the call. The call was quickly taken over by out OPS department who sent the call to Dallas to the security office. My colleague Nydia Gonzalez was the person in our OPS who took over the call before sending it to Dallas. She ended up testifying before congress. I remember fielding very few calls that day when on a normal day I'd take at least half a dozen in an hour. Surreal doesn't describe it. These ATC's are amazing to maintain professionalism in the face of this. I tip my hat to all of them.

    Listening to what ATC and the Airlines were all doing that day, no matter what airport they're at, is still surreal to this day. It takes me back to where I was that day; I was a Ramp Agent for Delta Airlines in TUS and I was brake riding in the cockpit of a B727 as it was under tow to the gate. 09/11/01 was the ONLY time ATC had ever talked to us and it was when they ordered the ground stop and then for everyone to return to their gates. We got the plane to the gate as planned, did a security sweep of the airplane (not knowing why), and then closed up the airplane. My coworker and I got into Operations just in time to see the footage of what was going on in NYC. We then had to scramble to get one of our gates cleared since one of the planes that we'd just pushed off was now coming back along with other airlines all landing all at once. When all of the airliners were down in TUS, then the Arizona Air National Guard at the end of the runway scrambled all of their F-16s. Never seen anything like it before or since. The rest of the day we were all huddled in Operations as we got the news in from both the TV and from Delta in Atlanta.

    Extremely proud of all the aviation professionals! I love all of them keeping calm and flexible thinking on their feet! I love this country so much and our people! We have a lot of problems and crappy people that do horrible things but then we have people like this! Who take pride in their jobs and do their best everyday! People be good, raise good kids, treat the working class with respect and by setting a good example you inspire others to follow! I wish I could thank all of them and give them a hug!

I grew up close to DC and every family in the area was Government Employees, Military, DOD it was a sad chaotic day. When we left school I remember seeing cops on the bus ramp that looked sad I didn’t fully understand why for many years.

    2024 It has been discovered that Tri-data had developed a system to insert False Radar Tracking - so confusing all Pilots in the area - giving time to fly the scheduled flights to Westover base - and substitute converted empty Tanker Aircraft - which also had Flight Termination systems installed - allowing control from " the ground " in the event of a Real Hi-jacking..... They then were sent into the Towers.. an evil plan costing the lives of thousands of innocent victims.. No A - rabs anywhere near....... just human greed...

    I live in California. Around 6 Am, I wandered into the kitchen and made coffee. The kitchen TV was on with the sound turned off and I remember getting involved in feeding our cats while barely noticing the footage of the first plane hitting the tower. I assumed the Today show was promoting an upcoming Bruce Willis movie. It took playing with the remote and another couple of minutes for me to grasp the situation.

      I was stationed in Washington state, on a submarine. We were in a shipyard, in a drydock, completely out of the water. I had duty the day before, so I stood watch that night and slept on the boat. The next morning, we all got up early (as usual) and did the morning clean up. One of the guys told me a plane had flown into the World Trade City. Didn't think anything of it at the time. After cleanup I walked up onto the pier and ran into another guy who told me a second airliner had flown into the other tower. It took me two seconds to realize that nothing was going to be the same. No work got done that day. Both crews were watching at least until noon. Then they started sending people home to make plans with family because they knew that life was going to change ... and it certainly did.

    It's so eerie to hear this in 2024. I lived in Southern California and once we watched the news I told my 14 year old son to stay home from school. He refused. There was a test that he didn't want to miss so I reluctantly took him but he did fine and came home safe. I know someone who was on the highway across from the Pentagon and watched that flight hit. People stopped and abandoned their cars and started running away as fast as they could. I lost contact with family there for hours.

    I’m very curious as to why JetBlue 17 was allowed to depart even after they stopped all the departures for everyone else after the second attack? Very interesting. I was 16 years old today this happened and I witnessed this from my kitchen window in Elizabeth New Jersey with my own eyes. It was hard to tell what was happening From that distance, but we had the TV on so we were getting more specific details from News coverage. Give me chills remembering that day. I remember later that night we had a candlelight vigil at the north Elizabeth train station where people were waiting for their family members to come home on the commuter trains. Many commuters were trapped in upper Manhattan or stuck in Brooklyn or Queens because the path train was not bringing anyone back to New Jersey and the bridges and tunnels were closed

    I remember that day well, and the nearly impossible task of getting a hotel room that evening. Most hotels were 'block booked' by airlines to accommodate passengers that would have been flying. The next day, cities were empty of people as no-one wanted to venture out. Hence we had attractions to ourselves.

    I remember that day well. Holding my youngest, a baby, to my chest and watching it all as it happened. I was thinking…thank God my sons are too young to go to war. We were called to the school to pick up our children. My oldest, Neil, was tearful and scared when I picked him up. Little did I know…that he would be killed in Afghanistan at the age of 21. Pfc Neil Isaac Turner. I miss him horribly.

    So confusing initially tower was contacted and asked if any plane missing. Without a survey the controller said no none of our planes down there. I'm at 12 minutes and it has been stated a plane was in the towers but I'm left to wonder if controllers are asking pilots to identify and did they know at that point it was a plane from there?

    I was in my car on my way to the airport starting a 3 day trip as a airline captain when I heard about the first tower strike on my car radio. Just as I was was walking into our pilot ops the second one hit. Pilots, flight attendants and customer service agents were all glued to the TVs. My first leg was to JFK.

    Even 23 years later, this is just chilling. The most chilling, of course, is hearing United 93 readback their clearances, knowing not only that they'd never land, but that as we hear these voices, there were 4 terrorists sitting a few rows behind the cockpit. Ugh. I revisit these recordings and the "real time" tv coverage every year to stay connected. When these events (even knowing how they played out) stop moving us emotionally when we see/hear them, then we're in trouble.

  • @327Erich
    @327Erich Месяц назад

    Interesting that at 27:35, she asks AA flight 587 to move up to clear space on the taxiway. AA 587 is the flight (an A300 that lost its vertical stabilizer due to wake turbulence on climb-out) that went down over Queens a couple months later, creating speculation of another attack (obviously, it wasn't).

    I know the controller for a majority of this recording is Stephen Roebuck, but what’s the name of the controller who takes over near the end? Think it’s Charlie something. He also played a key role with diverting some plane to alternate destinations, sent MAINE 85 over to New York, and was on duty when the US airspace was shut down. The key takeaway, as with all other recordings, is how much praise and respect ATC should always get for the job they do, even in the most unprecedented circumstances.
