Slate by Tim Miller with TAB
Could you imagine being able to write & improvise something like this as a student? I guess Tim can because this was recorded in 1997 when he was a student at the University of North Texas (UNT). The album "With the Distance" was a huge influence on me and I still really enjoy the album, particularly this track and Vehicle. Slate has incredible lines and Tim's playing & tone are so unique. I made a number of mistakes in this performance, but this is also like take ~20 and I need to move on with life. I find this pretty difficult to play and I'm really glad I spent this time transcribing it. I used the Amazing Slow Downer (ASD) to grab the notes. I'll link to the PDF if you want to learn i...

The Ending solo by Jay Graydon

I recorded this in November 2024. At the time I was just practicing it, and told myself I was going to make a higher quality video w/ my Les Paul strung up with 9s to make the bends easier. @BenBreard 25 дней назад

      @flywithoutwingss congrats. You should be able to check that just from looking at the pickup pole alignment with your strings. If the bridge pickup is the wider "trembucker" spacing, you're good to go. I bet they got yours right.

      @@flywithoutwingss I don't know if I have the ears to pinpoint it exactly. Overall the guitar just wasn't "right" and I wasn't happy with the sound compared to everything else I have. The stock ones are great pickups that many people love. I don't know if it's my OCD, or the wood on my particular guitar, but it just wasn't working for me. Note that gotoh has a bunch of options for these, including some with adjustable posts. So I don't know what you have specifically. I would try to thread a low E string through them all before installing. It will probably either not fit in 3 of them or be really tight. Put those on the high strings and you'll be good to go!

    11:00 That "falling out" was because Kyle and Joe Naylor wanted Danny Russell to work Sunday's making amps. Danny had modified some amps for me as well as making one based on the Super Drive 60 from an amp that was pathetic to put it gently turning it into a giant killer. The Naylor brand amps Danny made personally sounded good to me but me being a tight wad just couldn't pluck down the money for one. Danny told me that after he was separated from them that the amps began to sound brighter and brighter and that was due to Joe's tastes in tone which Danny was not a fanboy.

    oddly enough im having the opposite issue that youre having here lol. I have a strandberg that i dont like the low end of in the bridge pickup and was considering finding a pickup more similar to the full shred in the charvel. I have another charvel with the full shred sh-10, the mahogany has the TB-10 and to me they sound different. Which i found odd considering they're supposed to be the same, just with a tad difference in pole spacing. The super distortion was a pickup that i considered for the strandberg and it landed me here. Like you mentioned about the mids, there is a difference in the mid character that the full shred pushes that ive noticed my other pickups dont push as much. With high gain its not as noticable but low to mid gain its super noticeable, like in an amp with a plexi circuit. I don't use a boost or OD with the full shred where i would with other pickups. Anywho, I'll have to give the Dimarzio Transitions a shot and compare them with some other pickups i like. I dont think ive heard them or ever tried them. And if i had, i had no clue! lol

      Honestly I don't remember the specifics, that was a couple years ago. What I'm looking for 1) all notes ring true (no high frets or neck warp) 2) I prefer guitars that are louder and sound good unplugged - bonus if they feel resonate in my hands. 3) that needs to translate to sounding good through one of my rigs. The *one* Epiphone I tried (I'm sure most of them are great BTW) did not come anywhere close to passing 1 & 2. I could tell it was a bad instrument in just a few seconds. I use 9.5 on the high E on Fenders (rest of set is 10's). Makes high E much more bend-able. On shorter (Gibson) scale high E 10 works fine for me.

      That's *exactly* where I'm at. 10s on the 24.75 scale; 9.5s on the 25.5s. ....of course I still haven't moved my #1, but I moved my tele last night and love it.

    Hey great playing! Forget the fluffed note...I may give 9.5s a try on my strat...🤔 Tell me about the nut on your strat!?

    • @BenBreard
      @BenBreard 6 месяцев назад

      thanks! It's the LSR roller nut. It's a super cool idea/design. It works pretty well for me, but a lot of people don't really care for them. I will tell you that I modded an American standard in high school to add one of these. .....not worth the time, energy, money for the mod. It's fine if it comes on the guitar, but ...yeah that's my $0.02

    I love the ernie ball 9.5 slinky strings. Been using them for about 10 years. I feel they are easier to play and to bend with.

    there was a time everyone played 9-46, up until the late 90s. Heavier strings won’t make you sound more like SRV and do nothing for your tone. Mostly novice players play heavy strings 😂 why make it harder to play?

    • @BenBreard
      @BenBreard 6 месяцев назад

      Part of my struggle is loving heavy picks. You have to loosen your grip or change how hard you hit the strings. Anyway, there are still SRV-type guys out there who make it work. Phil Collen still uses 13s I think. ......I ..... just ...... can't. :)

    I wouldn't pay too much attention to that Beato video, IMO it was very flawed and manipulative in excecution (A Les Paul into a 100 watt amp and 4x12 cab miked with a dark ribbon mic into a dark Neve preamp). 9.5 is a great gauge though, D'addarios are stiffer than most strings so try the Primo slinkys if you want a little less tension but don't want to use 9s.

      Good tip thinks. I used EB strings for a long time but it's been years since I've used them. I should try again.

    Hated Gibson for 30+ years. Ordered a USA Greeny off Reverb 10/2023 intending to trash talk it & return it. Joke was on me, I absolutely fell in love with it. I’ll never part with it.

    That Studio is a Nice one I had a 25/50 Anniversary that you would want to sleep with But , DEAD AS A DOORNAIL I bet that body has a nice response when knocked on Regular LPs , with all the pieves glued up Could be magic? but MOSTLY NOT ,just pretty to look at , and well made perhaps

      Bummer that a nice limited run guitar was a bummer. It's ironic though, that even being a dud it will still have a great resale. It's a crazy world! I try to be substance over style guitar-wise, but I don't always live up to my ideals. :)
