Exploring Texas - Big Bend Ranch State Park: West Contrabando Fresno Divide Trail
This is part 4 of a multi-video series showing some of the wonders of the Big Bend area of Texas. Big Bend Ranch State Park is massive and remote, located west of Big Bend National Park, with many backcountry trails and few paved roads. From our base camp at Big Bend NP Rio Grande Village Campground, we drove west through Terlingua on Rt 170 to the West Contrabando Trailhead, and hiked out-and-back on the Fresno Divide Trail. (This is an enormous park; we barely scratched the surface.) Pleasant hiking in early February, with multi-colored rocks, cacti, and crystals along the trail.

    The landscape is so barren compared to the east coast. Still, there is beauty in the barrens.

    Been there. Texas has some of the most beautiful country that few have seen. I've hiked Alaska, Mexico, and most states in between, but the deserts of American are by far my favorite.

      In the Winds this year, we stored food in an Usack with OPSak (heavy ziploc), tied to a sturdy tree away from camp. We carry bear spray while hiking. When hiking thru dense cover, make noise, bang hiking poles, etc. Frankly, this summer in the central Winds, in 3 hikes we only saw one pile of bear scat (on Ice Lakes Trail), and no prints.

    Hi David could I get your advice on selecting a Titcomb basin loop route for our Boy Scout troop for august 2025? Trying to figure out the best 4 or 5 night route starting from a trailhead in the pinedale area. We would be flying into Jackson from San Diego and then driving to the trailhead. We are experienced Sierra mountains backpackers but our first time in Wyoming

    • @GrandDayOutside
      @GrandDayOutside 3 месяца назад

      Titcomb and Island Lake ares very popular, so try to avoid weekends. Definitely beautiful! Assuming you all can hike 10-12 miles a day, you could start at Elkhart TH near Pinedale and hike in to Island Lake on Day 1, day hike up Titcomb basin and return to Island on Day 2, hike over Lester Pass to Bald Mountain Basin on Day 3, hike south to Timico Lake, then west on Bell Lakes trail to Chain Lakes on Day 4, then back to the trailhead on Pole Creek Trail. Extend an extra day for side trips up Indian Basin or Cook Lakes. In 2 weeks I'll be releasing a video of a 3-day shorter variation of this loop we did this summer, from Lester Pass to Timico, then out past Chain Lakes to the trailhead, with the last day being 15 miles. Great views, great campsites, and very few people south of Lester Pass.
