The Olduns Shot

Known in the real world as Keith and on Flickr I am skida.
My adventures in shooting with old film cameras, mostly 35mm, with maybe the odd video of riding old motorbikes. I have been shooting as a hobby since about 1973 and have used a wide variety of cameras. I class myself as an enthusiastic amateur photograph taker and I am always happy to learn new stuff.
The program for 2024:
Sell some of my cameras and buy some more.
Live forever - it's working so far.

The latest "untested" ebay purchase - does it work?
Thanks for your video. Previously, I had an Olympus AZ 300 & I’ve currently got an Olympus IZM 300. In both cases they’re great cameras & despite the annoying side strap, are surprisingly easy to use. 👍😀
Thanks Mathew. I agree and I had no problem getting decent results with the camera. Cheers, Keith
I have several of these cameras. They can do long exposures and multiple exposures and almost always accurate exposed images. Love these cameras. I just saw the images after I posted a comment. I was expecting a zombie type vibe with the music you chose.
Thanks voiceman. I find it fascinating that the camera manufacturers were using so much innovation towards the end of the film era, as technology gave us so much variation in ways to put light on to a film emulsion. The music is very much dictated by the length of the piece matching the length of the slide show. I add it in YT's editor and it isn't easy. Cheers, Keith (Zombie Photographer) 😁
Great to see you back Keith. Never even saw this camera in Australia back then. Quite advanced for these cameras at that time. I like the Crap Cameras series. Cheers Marco.
Thanks Marco. It's not the most pleasant to shoot with but the results were much better than expected. The crap camera series is fun but my house is filling with 80s/90s plastic! I may sell some and carry on. Cheers, Keith
I've got the AZ 330 variant, excellent lens but not a great minimum focus distance, struggles with close ups of flowers and if I remember the 'half press' focus is far too sensitive so I ended up with some blurry shots as I was re-composing (bugger, I've just wasted 50p). I have to say I much prefer the Chinon's in this 'Z' camera format, just better designed for holding. I think the hand strap on the Olympus is just there to compensate for the likelihood of dropping it.
Thanks Iain. Of course I haven't tried the Chinon variant but I was pleasantly surprised with the quality from the Chinon Auto 3501 I bought in Moffat. Cheers, Keith
Ha, jus got one those last week, film window light seal needed replacing, just running a test roll at the mo
Thanks vin. I think you will like the image quality. Cheers, Keith
It packs a punch!
Thanks. I agree. Cheers Keith
A very unusual design. Are you able to control precisely how far the lens zooms?
Thanks Kevin. To tell the truth I didn't notice anything untoward so I don't think it has definite stops like the Konica. Cheers, Keith
The short answer is No, not precisely. It really depends on how quickly you take you finger off the zoom buttons. But don't let that dissuade you. These 'Z' cameras, as they're collectively known, give you a different shooting experience with excellent lenses. There's just a bit of a learning curve.
Nice images. I suspect the camera's bulk told against that style, Chinon made a couple that were similar.
Thanks grahvis. It is definitely bulky and the side strap makes it feel unbalanced, but it shoots nice. Cheers, Keith
Taking photo's of graves a bit morbid.
Hi James. I have my own set of rules about shooting in graveyards and I like to think they offer valid photographic subjects. I tend to stick to old memorials where there is no chance of upsetting recently bereaved relatives. Cheers, Keith
How are you scanning your shots?
Thanks for visiting. I use a plustek OpticFilm 8100 which I really like although it only does 35mm. The software is Silverfast 8. Cheers, Keith
Interesting video as always Keith. No feline photo bombing this time eh? 😁. It's usually "socks"
Thanks Iain. I normally film myself in the middle of the settee but Sox was asleep and I didn't have the heart to disturb him. Cheers, Keith
I've looked at those Olympus models, I think every manufacturer seemed to have had one of these wierd looking 'bridge' cameras in their line-ups during that era. My personal favourite and one I want to pick up if I find a reasonably priced working one is the FujiFilm FZ-3000 ZoomDate which looks like a pair of binoculars out of Star Wars. You can't knock the images you got out of it though, Keith. It might not be pretty but it takes some good shots.
Thanks Andrew. When I got the first scan up on the screen I knew it was a good'n. It is an ergonomic disaster but the image quality makes up for it. I have been having problems with my 10 years old PC and it crashed twice while I was uploading the video. I have hoovered the heat sinks and fans and I am hoping this helps. Cheers, Keith
@theoldunsshot1005 I ended up biting the bullet a month or so ago and buying a new PC. Mine would routinely crash or quit the app. The old PC I had was designed for word docs and spreadsheets, not photoshop and video editing.
Subscribed. Hope to see many more videos on your channel in 2024 and beyond.

Chris Sherlock channel...New Zealand for EVERYTHING Kodak Retina...ette ‼️ He is THEE MASTER AND AUTHORITY
Thanks. I agree Chris Sherlock is the master when it comes to Kodaks from this era. I watch his videos in awe. Cheers, Keith
Get well soon Keith!
I had one. East German camera. Good sharp lens.
Thanks Alastair. I suspect the lens performs better than my shots show, but that shutter release man! Cheers, Keith
I thought crap camera 5, the minolta? It had a sharper lens.
Thanks Steve. I don't know if Konica and Minolta had merged when the Konica Z-Up was released, but I know what you mean. The Pentax and Konica both may suffer from a bit of camera shake because the slow lenses can force slow shutter speeds in challenging light. The latest shoot was very challenging at times with tall broadleaf trees close together. I think both cameras are better suited to beaches and open spaces, but I was happy with both. Cheers, Keith
These little cameras used to bang in the day especially as travel cameras. Nice shots Keith.
Thanks Marco. I think you are right in that they are just about perfect for travel cameras (though maybe not passing through airports with their security). Big open spaces in bright sunlight or in the bar using flash. Cheers, Keith
It’s amazing to see how many decent crap compact cameras there still are out there Keith. It’s great to see you unearth one after another. And that expired and also crap expired ColorPlus 200 also did a decent job in the circumstances. I’m really enjoying your videos and the photographs are always interesting to see. Keep up the good (not at all crap) work! All the best, Paul
Thanks Paul. These "crap" cameras are the last bastion of cheap film cameras these days and it is great fun trying them out. I have never loved ColorPlus, so it was really refreshing to get these results, especially as the film wasn't refrigerated - I found it in a bag on top of my wardrobe, totally forgotten about. Cheers, Keith
Keith, you'll have to change the title of this group of cameras! Crap cameras that take good photos doesn't sound right, maybe "reasonable oldies" may be an alterative. As ever, an entertaining video with good results from out dated film and "reasonable budget compact camera". keep your videos coming - love them - keep me entertained. Cheers, Ray
Thanks Ray. These cameras are a bit of fun. With their limited apertures they need to be treated gently of course, but the quality can be found sometimes. Cheers, Keith
You seem to have a knack of picking up some half decent 'crap cameras' Keith. The shots looked pretty good.
Thanks Andrew. The series is starting to get a bit "off message" with these damn good crap cameras keep popping up. I am having fun with them, but I think it may be time to shoot with some better made models. Cheers, Keith
- 00:07 🏺 The speaker visits an antiques shop and buys a late 1950s viewfinder camera, intrigued by its appearance. - 00:50 📷 The camera has a 45mm f/2.8 lens, limited shutter speeds (1/30, 1/60, 1/125), and a cold accessory shoe on top. - 01:52 🛠️ The camera's quirks include a unique method for setting the frame counter and operating the rewind function. - 03:00 👁️ The viewfinder is poor, making composition difficult; the shutter release is long and prone to causing camera shake. - 03:45 💡 The speaker believes the lens could be sharp under the right conditions, suggesting use of a cable release for steadier shots. - 04:09 🎞️ They jokingly introduce a new photography genre, "Baretography," likening it to Lomography for its quirky camera output. - 05:41 📸 The speaker finds the resulting photos reminiscent of basic family cameras like the Box Brownie, with slow shutter speeds. - 06:24 😂 The term "Baretography" is a playful nod to the camera's tendency to produce slightly shaky images. - 06:43 📽 The speaker teases two upcoming film projects involving urban photography and a Minolta Maxxum 7000.
Well that summarises it pretty accurately. There goes my average viewing time. 🙂 Cheers, Keith
Very nice review, i see by searching online that it was introduced in 2002 … and was one of the last film cameras that Konica produced.
Thanks Ronny. I forgot to look up the year properly. Konica did so many Z-Ups of different zoom lengths it gets confusing. Cheers, Keith
Some really nice colours there, as you say, natural.
Thanks Andrew. I loved that film when we could get it for a pound. Cheers, Keith
Infinity is efficient through a window lol. Nice Keith brings back memories. Cheers Marco.
Thanks Marco. I am enjoying myself with these "crap" cameras. Cheers, Keith
Sounds like the camera had been well travelled before you got it, Keith. The previous owners obviously took care of it as it still had the box and manual. The photos weren't too bad considering it was an expired film and the camera exposed it as new.
Thanks Andrew. The camera is in super condition, considering I believe it was last used in 2017 when the Thomson Celebration cruise ship was doing Norwegian trips (detective work). I think with fresh film the image quality will be good. Looking forward to seeing what the Pentax can do next. Cheers, Keith
Nice little holiday camera that.
Agree with that. Cheers, Keith
I also got one of these from Boots The Chemist in the 1960s my first 35mm camera it cost 6-95 then and I used it until the 1970 I still have it among my collection and took many photos with it the lens is quite sharp I remember but I agree about the shutter release
Thanks Phil. The next time out I will try a cable release or a monopod to see it the shots get sharper. I'm sure there is some quality trying to get out of that lens. Cheers, Keith
Granted that’s an awful camera to use but the pics looked good. Still though, I’m with you. I wouldn’t huck it in the trash but it’d get forgotten on my drawer- no that’s too good for it. It would go into my bag of crap lenses.
Thanks Steve. I never had one of these or anything similar when they were current, so I don't know if it is something signifying approaching doom. Maybe they just sounded like that new. The pictures were a redeeming factor though. Cheers, Keith
Hello from Oregon state USA! I just found your channel from your post on 35mmc. It’s refreshing to see more gear reviews since most of the new contributors are meandering into the artsy/philosophical shooting experience side. I’m a 64 year old Pentax user. I find digital to be too easy, therefore boring. My ability taking interesting pics is lousy but I still find film cameras fascinating and once in a while I’ll screw up and actually take a good shot. You and Cameron both have the eye for it. Nice work. Keep the reviews coming!
Thanks Steve. I'm just the same as you - I enjoy the experience of shooting and processing film, using the controls on a film camera and generally having to think before pressing the shutter. If the shot is good it is an added bonus. Cheers, Keith
Very well done Cameron.
Thanks Darren. He will be delighted with your comment. Cheers, Keith
Cameron clearly has an eye for composition. The shots he took looked pretty damn good. Both cameras and photographers did well, Keith. Looking forward to seeing what the crap/not so crap cameras can deliver.
Thanks Andrew. I really hope he gets photography bug. All he has previously shot with is his phone and I think he will be delighted with the positive response here. I'm also looking forward to getting out with the new/old cameras. Cheers, Keith
He has a talent ... now he just needs to develop a passion.
Thanks Iain. I think that is going to happen. Cheers, Keith
Welcome back Keith. Family is the most important. Luved the video.
Thanks Marco. It's great when you can share an interest. Cheers, Keith
Your grandson has a good eye for composition. Well done, especially for a first time with a manual focus camera.
Thanks Ray. I hope that with encouragement he will take it further. Cheers, Keith
The first shot of Cameron's is very impressive. Nice Video👍
Thanks. He will be delighted with the response. Cheers, Keith
I actually said "bloody hell" out loud to myself on that first shot of Cameron's. Impressive stuff for a first/second timer!
Thanks Jon. I am pleased as punch that he has a good eye. Cheers, Keith
My dad bought one of these in Boots Sunderland in the 1960's. I used it a lot and believe it or not I still have it. I used to take photos of locomotives on Newcastle Station. My version has a rewind lever and is in a black case. They were made in East Germany by Beier...
Thanks. I can imagine it brought a lot of fun. I used to shoot the occasional loco too. Cheers, Keith
Cool camera and nice shots- sometimes the worst camera is the best!
Thanks Stephen. I'm sure there are some good shots waiting to be captured with this camera. Cheers, Keith
So sorry to hear that Keith . Hoping you make a good recovery and have a great holiday . Take care.
Thanks Trevor. I'm fully recovered, sold the cameras, but the holiday abroad didn't happen, so I've been consoling myself buying more cameras. Cheers, Keith
If I had spotted the acronym at that meeting I would have kept my mouth well and truly shut ... 😐😖😆
Haha! Me too! Thanks Iain. This actually made front page on the Chronic when it happened. Cheers, Keith
My first camera. Dad bought it for me in Munich in 1960. I was so proud. To be honest, it wasn't fabulous and I upgraded to a second-hand Paxette two years later. Thank you for the memories.
Thanks Chris. I,ve never tried a Paxette but they do look interesting. This Beirette is probably better than my first camera, a Halina Paulette, but not by much. Cheers, Keith
I hope you are better
Thanks. I'm fully recovered now. Cheers, Keith
My favourite shot was the little old lady with the Superdrug carrier bag passing by completely unaware of your presence but in the background a man with a guitar in a soft case is watching you. Other shots I liked were the Haymarket bus station and the City Baths building. One of these days I'll probably see you out and about taking pictures as I live in the North East. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks David. That man with the guitar had been watching me closely all the time I was there and I'm sure he knew exactly what I was doing. The Haymarket shot from the "Spiral" is a bit of a local cliche, but that's because it works. Cheers, Keith
I do prefer Kentmere to Fomapan, I tend to stick that in crap cameras where the results don't matter so much. I do enjoy street photography so I don't know why I don't do it more often. Newcastle is a great spot for it too. Great video and some really nice images there, Keith. There is something about the shot at 3.39 that really works for me. I think it's the perspective of both the building and the people. 👍
Thanks Andrew. I suppose I'm just going to have to man-up and start doing this more often. I've had some good results with Foma and I've had some shockers - I don't think it is consistent enough to trust. I'm glad I have finished my stock and can now concentrate on film I can trust. Cheers, Keith
Amazing video❤❤❤
Thank you!!
I'm glad I made the shift to Kentmere film as my budget option. I dunno what went wrong at Foma, but the quality has been very inconsistent over the last couple of years.
Thanks Jim. I have had the same experience. When it works, it's great but I can't trust it anymore, so Kentmere it is. Cheers, Keith
I saved my pocket money and bought one of these from a local pawn shop in the 70s. It got me started with developing and printing 35mm film. I later “upgraded” to a Zenit E (a well trodden path, I’m sure!). Now shoot with a Fujifilm GFX system, but sometimes pull out a Mamiya 645 for film. (Still got the Zenit though, but sadly not the Beirette.)
Thanks. I enjoyed shooting with this camera, even with its faults. That Mamiya sounds like fun. Cheers, Keith
