I always paint from farback to nearfront, as in real life, makes more sense to me and omits filling in all the block,
Don't fret you didn't mean it.
Thank you so much it’s true, I only have good intentions!❤
Thanks Lydia
So happy to share as always, thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed watching your tutorials! Plus your plain desert painting. Keep up your excellent work.
@@albertogarza6252 thank you so much!
Good job, great location, I'm doing many of the area now too, from photos I took when plein airing there a few years ago, near bell rock etc.. Nice you held back on the saturation of the sun light on rock. it's a "rookie mistake" to overdo stuff in the background of a painting since it is a painting and not a photograph, so you need to have some depth in it. Stuff in the distance that is too bright messes up the depth and makes the entire painting look too "flat", you avoided that, good one! One thing, nice to have a small break in the foreground trees to provide a lead in through the scene.
Very nice. I especially lie how you approached the sky.
Beautiful!!Thanks for sharing!
@@ruthannlocke14 thank you for watching!! 💖
you really captured the feeling .....nice job thank you
@@karenpiukkula thank you!!
😮❤ dang I wanna paint like you
@@chompers11 that’s very sweet. I’m always trying to improve!
Can you tell me what colors of paint that you use to achieve these colors? I am really struggling with color mixing to get the colors that I want, especially to hilite where the sun hits the rocks.
@@reneekroyer5104 my palette is pretty much warms and cools of the primary colors! Titanium white, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium lemon yellow, yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, cadmium red light, cadmium red medium, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue hue. For the highlights of the rocks I basically add a bit of yellow and white into my red rock mixture, which is typically red with a bit of yellow and ultramarine blue + white. The reds and yellows I choose depend on if I’m pushing a warmer temperature or cooler temperate which shifts a lot depending on what’s closer or farther away, whether its in light or shadow! Does this help? Let me know if you’d like me to clarify anything further! I think I will try to film more color mixing in future videos ☺️
@@lydiagatzowart Yes, that is VERY helpful, thank you. I would LOVE to see more videos with color mixing. I am a visual learner -- especially as I'm getting older. lol Seeing it done before my eyes is a huge help.
Looks great!
@@CedricWilliamsFineArt thank you!!!
@@lydiagatzowart you're welcome 🎨🎨
Values were really well done, same with saturations showing atmosphere. Why didnt you push the bright orange on the very background hill, just curious, it works great the way it is. And the foreground grasses are beautiful and I like them how you did it. A lot of folks would overemphasize the light as being the only important component of the composition and would have maybe taken the grasses a shade darker, maybe two shades darker, just to keep the lights and darks totally separate. But the greens to mix are gorgeous, and I like the more realistic portrayal, speaks to the energy of Sedona -John
Hi John! Thank you so much for this feedback! I held back from the saturation on the background hill because I didn’t want it to take away from the light hitting castle rock. I actually ended up pushing the saturation on castle rock a little more even when I got home, which is a good lesson for me to be a little more bold next time in the field! I could have taken the value of the grasses down a notch, I may play with that a little in the next sunrise scene. Thanks for pointing that out! I do feel that the shadow area here was a little more mid value to dark range, morning light feels a little less contrasting than sunset, so I wanted to maintain that softness. The foreground shadow seems to get darker as the light drops further down….if that makes sense😂 thanks for watching and pointing these things out!!!❤🎉
I’ve been watching your channel for years but never commented much and although I would be tempted to watch any artist painting in Sedona, you seem to have a more natural approach that comes through in your work. Love your style.
@@vincentterracciano8214 wow thank you so much! I’m definitely always learning and growing. I think living here has really helped me to understand the landscape in a more intimate way.
Good comment, yes, it's a special place, Sedona, and not just for "channeling the energy of the universe" through your body to reach some higher state of existence. I often thought I could make a lot of money there setting up an "institution" for the channeling of dark energy and matter. No one else is doing it and since astrophysicists say it apparently holds the whole universe together from flying apart, people could use that in their own lives, so they don't fly apart, occasionally, just saying!! Just Kiddddding!! Actually, they could just go out and paint, and that will help a bit in their lives too!! LOL ;D
heart, love the sky explanation
Thank you!!!
Thanks Lydia...really impressive 🤗
Thanks so much, happy you’re here! ❤
The light as it hits is beautiful
I know! I never feel like I do it justice! But I keep trying 😂 such a magical moment
This looks great. I learned a lot from watching it (painting the intensity of the rocks was super hard for me when I was in Sedona in April). Couple quick questions to help me please... 1) Can you show how you like to mix your greens sometime? 2) Can you push the top layer of the teapot to be more cad yellow-ish (maybe just desaturating with a warm white, pushing the value, and pushing towards yellow more that way?). I dunno, just brainstorming on things I might try in my own version of this place. 3) I think the temperature shift here of the light is perfect. The light on the clouds is not too yellow, so suggests a midday sun that's cooler, and the same cool light is obvious on how the highlights on the red portions of the cliffs is mostly lightened with a cool ivory white and only a little cad yellow too. Awesome. 4) Would you show a slowed down video of how you paint just a single tower from start to finish, including all the last hightlights added? I want to learn how to make them so voluminous (great use of color mods to create form) -john.on.the.road
Hi John!! Thank you SO MUCH for your amazing comments and questions here! I really appreciate it. I will absolutely create a video focusing on the modeling of a single red rock feature or spire, as well as mixing greens! Those are great ideas for future videos. And the key to painting Sedona for sure! You can totally push the yellow of the top sandstone layer, but because those cliffs are pretty far away and atmospheric, I wanted to grey them down more using a violet mixture even though the light is hitting them. Keeping things in key and pushing the atmosphere, but I’d be curious to see the result of that! It may mean adjusting the surrounding colors a little to make it work! Hope this helps…happy painting!!!❤❤❤
Gorgeous. Makes me want to go paint it! Was it super hot??
Thank you! Yes it was! I was drenched in sweat by the end 😅but worth it every time!
I'm learning by example. Plein air pushes you to paint fast. Its getting used to how to use my materials on site that slows me down. (noob). You have an appealing style of painting.
Stunning
Thank you! 😊
Great composition, well done capturing a stunning landscape, even without a few necessities!
Thank you! We do our best!!😅
Excellent!!!!!!!!!🦝
Thanks!!😊

Thank you!! Hoping to keep creating and sharing!
I'm a watercolor artist but really loved your approach, mindset and the stages of this painting. Really turned out nice, not to mention that you didn't have the brushes and rags you needed. Painting is stunning.
Thank you so much 😀
This is so cool! You guys are like modern day hippies! The only thing missing are the flower-power paintings on the side of the van. What you have done with your ‘home’ is super amazing! I wish you a very happy life in your very special abode!
Beautiful painting! Love Arizona landscape 😍
Thank you!! Me too!

Aww thank you Kristi. It feels really good, thanks for inspiring me to play with this again!
Beautiful painting! The landscapes in Arizona are amazing, I painted there last year and really enjoyed it. You've captured it really well here!
Thank you so much! Living here is a total dream!
Backlit vegetation is so difficult to create depth in. I like your description of tone and temperature to creat it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks so much! It is a real challenge, I’m still learning every day!
It was very interesting to see 'three dimensional' shapes appear with two dimensional brushstrokes. I like how you what you are doing and why - it is clear and infomative. Great painting! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!

@@lydiagatzowart yes! I enjoyed it very much. I liked watching you paint. It's very relaxing.
The switch to your palette knife was absolutely brilliant, it gave a subtle but essential dimension to this wonderful rendition of Coffee Pot Rock. I think this is one of your best paintings, I’ve visited Sedona numerous times over the years and gave serious thought to moving there. Planning another trip there later this summer. Love what you do.

I’ve watched many of your videos over the last year and this one of your best. My wife and I love Sedona, we spent some of our honeymoon there and have been back numerous times. We even thought of moving there. You are lucky to have an unending amount of beautiful and amazing inspirational places in that part of Arizona. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! The best artist of course, is Nature. It is just a university out here. Very fortunate to paint the sacred land of Sedona and also so grateful that you enjoy my painting! Next time your back here you can view my work in person at The Wyatt Gallery in town :) Best wishes
