1970s Things That Kids Today Will Never Understand!
A few years back, I bought a Casio G Shock and hated it almost immediately. It would do everything except consistently give the time. I used to joke that it took 3 hands and an engineering degree to change functions. My current watch is a self winding Timex Expedition that does nothing but keep time.
Hmm, don’t think anyone ever put a brownie on a tripod. Pretty sure my brownie didn’t have have the tripod mount on the bottom. Was indeed a nice little simple camera, pictures nowhere near as good as a 35mm reflex, but not bad.
No, I don't think you can mount it on a tripod like cameras today, which makes it all the more impressive to hand-hold it and not have blurry photos.
Spock was awesome.
I liked the way women dressed in the 50s. They looked very sexy.
Did your parents or grand-parents remember driving a classic car to get a burger at a drive-in diner? Go on a date to see a movie at a drive-in theater? Or dance at a sock hop? The 1950s American Dream We STILL Love! ruclips.net/video/H_nMZjEli84/видео.html
Super video ! Subscribed.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. ❤️
I've never heard of over half of these stores.
It's a mix of national, major cities, and regional stores. Next time, I'll do one focused on nationally recognized stores.
Yeah, I personally remember and miss stores like Deb, PacSun, Wick's and Sticks. Just Basic old school mall stores. But, I grew up in the 90's in South East TN. I didn't see a whole lot.@@wonderyears_nostalgia
I remember the Incredible Universe in Garland/Dallas It became that Fry's with the cows. Now they are both gone.
Thanks for the comment! That is so interesting!
The founder of Toys R Us had died in 2018 when they bankrupt. A private equity firm put Toys R Us in too much debt that they could not overcome
Yeah, pretty unbelievable to screw up an iconic business like that.
The Tandy TRS-80 color computer shown at 1:11 was my first computer
Nice! Must have felt amazing to own a computer back then.
Toys R Us is still around in Canada
At least it's around in some form. Toy R Us is still here in the States, but inside a Macy's.
10:01 this is an 8 mm movie camera! 🙄
Thanks for your comment. Someone had already pointed it out. Yes, the Kodak Brownie 8mm Movie Camera came out in 1951. Great for making home movies in the 50s!
tower records! A great place to hang and find new music.
That's right! You go to the one on Sunset Blvd?

A little lower in the village. You are thinking of the Virgin Megastore. I loved that one. ❤️
Did you used to shop at these stores? Did you work in retail? Did you work at any of these? Things Rich Families Had in the 90s…That You Wanted! ruclips.net/video/1KhnyprpH-8/видео.html
I pine for the days of vcrs. The number of times I have to reset my phone and TV to cast streaming services drives me round the bend. 10 minutes of stuffing around to watch a movie. I used to enjoy the trips to the video library. And there was no stuffing around when you wanted to record something at short notice. I swear it took less time to turn on the tv and put in a cassette than it does now to boot stuff up via menus.
Oh yeah, the number of times I have to unplug and plug the cable box every time I leave for a vacation drives me crazy. Now I just unplug it so at least it's a routine I have to do.
Bought a used one two weeks ago, refurbished. Now busy sorting thru my 100+ old vhs tapes. 😊
@@wesleyrodgers886Hope your tapes still work well. I mean, it's the stories that are important, not the resolution, and it always seemed more social. You know, have a few friends around to watch a movie! Have fun!
My first time was in 72 right before turning 22. Got carded for the first time. Stayed at the Westward Ho many times and even got room comped. Could walk anywhere and made the mistake of walking from the Ho to downtown on a 100 degree day. Took a taxi back. Been there 41 times and last was in 2019 and could be the last.
Amazing! Yeah gotta becareful walking there. It's still the desert. I hope you have many other journeys!
My parents had a Brownie camera.
Bold lamps wasn't knew to the 1950s they had them in the 1930s.
Thank you for the comment! Right, just saying bold lamps were a prominent feature in 50s living rooms, but not limited to the 50s as with most of these things.
"Not only was the G-Shock rugged, Geico's cave men were thrilled to have a watch of their own!"
"AS TIME MOVES ALONG SOME OF US GO WITH IT" before internet, myspace, or chatrooms were incorporated across the many of today's tech milestones, we had the b.b.s. (bulletins) and sent a varied set of messages, internal commands & programs.. the b.b.s. did the job, was full of bugs, and had no real security - it also possessed no transit decoders nor would different protocols translate, at all.. but, the means were competent and resources used much less space to function - the automated parts of modern c-class cut reps & though an average script is relatively short, the backwall of a program comes with an avalanche of necessities (and bloat).. so, the newer tech requires an applicable need for the exponentially high amount of capacity, where 32k was once considered larger than any program would need to run, individually - they would take a long time for batches to meet updates, but, instead of mail worms we had grid bugs.. when mega-ram turned into giga-ram, then tens & hundreds of gigabyte drives, on to terabytes, the micronization of components allowed for tiny circuits, alloys & accellerated the processor to expand potential use.. the internet's design is really an extreme version of the original b.b.s. put to some tests to transcend through many broken boundaries, of its own...
I know a couple that met on a bbs chat room in the 90s. They are still together today!
stayed at El Rancho, worst bed I was ever in
Sorry to hear that. A trip to Vegas should always be amazing.
My dad's brother (my Uncle) lived across the driveway from us. Was the first to purchase a color TV with remote control in the late 1950's. My sisters and I used to watch with ENVY from our living room window when he turned it on in his living room. We had an old B&W RCA for at least 10 years till it finally gave up the ghost. For me as a child, it was an eternity.
That's a great memory! Color TV with remote in the 50s...that's quite the luxury. Having to wait 10 years for a new TV, that's too long 😩
@@wonderyears_nostalgia I'm absolutely sure it was too long. My dad would get a friend (and drinking buddy) of his in the TV bizz to fix it when it broke. He would install new "firecrackers" (burned out caps, resistors and tubes I later learned). The TV guy had a BEAUTIFUL daughter though.
for us in the 70s it was cool to get a hand me down t.v. for your own bedroom - it would be a big while before one of them was in color..
I love reading these comments 😁
Great videos y so little followers 🤷♂️😎
Thank you! I don't know 🤷♂️ I'll just do the best I can and hope for the best. 😎
nobody likes pepsi
I would only drink it if Coke wasn't available.
the palm pilot is basically what we all have now , a mobile smartphone with a touch screen , it was and still is awsome
Yeah, pretty amazing to have a touch screen without a keyboard. Pre-iPhone days!
the g shock is timeless
Yes, great for those Xtreme sports.
I am the Blue Gringo. I’ve answers to some of your questions.
I saw a Ricky Ricardo show at the El Rancho. I was the only person in attendance.
Ricardo played bass under his wife’s dress.
Wow! This is Desi Arnaz? It was called the Ricky Ricado Show?
Altair is the name of a real star - star trek didn't make it up.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, the name is debatable, but I'll go with Star Trek. More exciting! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altair_8800
One of the Brownie models shown is a movie camera, not a still camera, as is being discussed in the narrative. ~
Thanks for pointing that out! Yes, you are referring to 10:02 the Kodak Brownie 8mm Movie Camera. There are many versions of this camera.
My mom's famous words...I come alive in Vegas! 2004
That's a good memory! Lol!
I have a color photo of my mom and dad on those camels at the Sahara 6:03
Thanks great! I would love to see it!
Only thing I like about Vegas is the building s old or new I design of them they are neat to look at
Yes, old or new Las Vegas has unique architecture that's interesting to look at.
The Golden Gate was there downtown from 1906
Sounds like another idea for another video!
I thought it was the oldest. Had a great shrimp cocktail for .75 cents.
I knew it in 1972 but still I miss this version. I was saying to a friend today that the hotels from the front deck/concierges/ bellmen/ taxi driver...it did not matter every one could not have been nicer to you. Having spent most of the my years in 3 different shows I learned a great deal about the inside of the town in the 70's. Luckily, I left with only good memories.
Must be amazing to have experienced Vegas during the 70s! Attitudes about service and how they saw their jobs is different vs today.
Worked for several years as a showgirl at the Riviera Hotel during the late 80s. Got to become friends with Liza, Leslie Gore ,Pia Zadore and a few other headliners. So cool.. There was a real sense of community among the entertainers at that time . Jubilee at Ballys, Lido @ Stardust, Follies at the Tropicana. Mirage was just getting ready to open featuring Sigfried and Roy. The Silver Slipper......Glamour and glitzy good times ✨️💃✨️
That's amazing! It's an honor to have you comment on the video! I bet you have tons of stories to tell.
Congratulations , you got into one of the best parties in time this planet has ever seen . I used to work in a hotel disco back then . No other time in history has ever even come close .
My dad's best Vegas pal (they were in real estate) was married to a showgirl who worked well into her forties and never lost that 'show girl walk'!
Shame these are US dominated. We in the UK had the Sinclair C5 as one of our biggest failures. Powered by either pedals or a small battery, the tricycle that was meant to go on roads, but was too small & frightening to try out for fear of getting run over! Check out its history here: ruclips.net/video/lL_0QGvPz7M/видео.html
Thank you for your comment! This is an American nostalgia channel. Hopefully, one day with some help I can branch out to UK nostalgia. Wow! That Sinclair C5 personal vehicle would definitely not work here. It kinda of looks like an old motorcycle side car.
@@wonderyears_nostalgia LOL. Awful isn't it! Sadly, Sinclair never recovered & sold his business to a rival UK electronics company called AMSTRAD. 😢
I live in Vegas. There is no respect for history. There is no sense of roots. The whole city looks about as permanent as a soap bubble.
Great to have a local here! That's why we need museums and the arts to preserve this history. Glad to see The Flamingo, El Cortez, Golden Nugget, and at least by name, Sahara are still around.
I agree I’ve been to Vegas 50-60 times. My favorite time was in the late 70s. I used to walk all over the place then with no fear of crime. And I was in my early 20s.
I still want a laserdisc player but one from 90s. I see a lot of disc's at yard sales and thrift store
I do miss physical media and looking at art work 🥲
A really bad history lesson
Left out the link
Try doing some homework. You're conflating two completely different El Rancho properties.
Thanks for pointing that out! Yes, El Racho Vegas (1941-1960) and El Rancho (1982-1992) formerly the Thunderbird and Silverbird.
@@wonderyears_nostalgia I would point out that you state that the Sahara was rebuilt and rebranded as the Sahara in 2014. It actually rebranded to SLS Las Vegas for several years before another remodel and rebrand back to the Sahara in 2019. But everyone seems to want to forget that SLS ever happened so I guess no biggie.. just pointing it out.
Thanks for pointing that out. I decided to talk about the original hotel vs what it is now.
@ no worries just pointing it out in case you were worried about missing it. Great video 👍🏼
Grand Hilton Resorts is where the first El Rancho stood. Not Fontainebleau
Nice video! Thank you. I hope you don'r mind a correction... El Rancho burned down, yes, but the El Rancho was on the West side of LVBD where the Hilton Timeshare and Festival Grounds is. The newer El Rancho which you showed a photo of the newer sign is the former location of the Thunderbird and Silverbird, now the lot the Fountaine Bleu is on. Additionally, the Dunes Sultan did not survive until the end. It was only on the stip from 1955 to 1964, the Sultan was then relocated to the golf course and was on I-15. It caught fire late 1980s.
Thanks for pointing that out! Yes, El Racho Vegas (1941-1960) and El Rancho (1982-1992) formerly the Thunderbird and Silverbird. Gotta do better next time!
NES and SNES pronounced as how? "Ess En EE Ess" and "En Ee Ess"? Coming from someone who remembers those things at the time they were out we used to pronounce them as acronyms such as "Nez" and "Snez"!
Thank you for your comment. I addressed it in an earlier comment.
@@wonderyears_nostalgia Thanks for your reply, yes, I noticed right after I left this comment.
Nice Vid! I've been staying in Vegas every year since 1970!🙂
Thank you! Wow! You've seen the changes every year!
My first year was a1972. Been there a total of 41 times. Us Oldgoat's have to agree Vegas is nothing like in the old days. $.75cent 🍤 at the Golden gate.
Never saw the El Rancho. The Frontier Hotel got to go to. It was nice. Played at the Flamingo Hilton Hotel. The Dessert Inn was a very nice hotel. The Sahara Hotel was somewhat out of the way. Played in the casino here and ate at the restaurant. The Rivera had a good casino. The Royal Nevada closed by the time I got there. The Dunes Hotel had a nice casino. Got sick after eating there once. Never got to go to the Hacienda. My wife liked the Tropicana Hotel. The Stardust was a very nice hotel. My first contact with The Boyd Group. The Golden Nugget is considered the best hotel downtown.
Thank you for your comment and for sharing your experience! Must have been some amazing times!
@@wonderyears_nostalgia They were. There were a few times my wife and I played at the Silver City Casino. Across the street from the Stardust. About 12 or 1230 my wife was hanging out near the craps table. She asked if I was hungry. So I cashed out and we went across the street to The Stardust Hotel and ate at Toucan Charlies. One of her favorite coffee shops. It was open 24/7.
@@harlanabraham7772 Amazing! I love stories about what people did and where they went. My first visit to the strip was back in '96 at Treasure Island. Thanks again for sharing! It's a privilege to have you comment on the video. Although I haven't personally experienced this era myself, I had a fun time making this video. It was like unraveling a treasure. I hope I did it some justice.
How can you forget Commodore 64 with the Guinness Book of Sales Records? 🤦🤦
Thanks for your comment! We'll get there!
