    Thanks so much AJ, for all of these this season...including the very amusing "there's no snow kids" videos, and the ones which took the opportunity to teach outdoor adventure techniques, and the especially the meteorology analysis video. A great weekly resource.

    Really, such small windows of great conditions and low risk this year. I've maybe had 4 good safe days in the backcountry this year, whereas this time last year I had close to 30. Oh well, here's to next season.

  • @misterfunnybones
    @misterfunnybones 6 месяцев назад

    Honestly, it's just unbelievable the number of people that venture into the back country with nothing. No experience, no trip plan, no ten essentials, no shovel, no probe, no transceiver, not even a backpack. When I see people in the back or slack country with no backpack, then I know they are absolutely ignorant. SAR volunteers are generally prepared to deal with legitimate back country accidents, but this level of stupidity is frustrating because an unprepared visit to the back country is a choice, not an accident.

    • @northshoresnowpack
      @northshoresnowpack 7 месяцев назад

      Most of the footage is from an area closed to public access but the snowpack is fairly uniform across the North Shore. As for the terrain, identical features can be found on Hollyburn, DePencier Lake, Suicide Gully or Black Mountain.

    I've always used the Canadian models since I assumed they're more accurate in Canada. Is this not the case?

    • @northshoresnowpack
      @northshoresnowpack 7 месяцев назад

      Not necessarily. (Some would say definitely not...) Models don't take borders into account. In fact the european ECMWF (available on windy.com) is often the most accurate model for winds around here. The NAM is often the starting point for many avalanche professionals. I usually look at a whole bunch of models but that can be time consuming. Comparing the American NAM and Canadian RDPS is a good approach if a little frustrating as they are often at odds.

    I appreciate your dedication to these videos, but I think barely mentioning variation was a mistake in this one. Most people don't fully understand the difference between magnetic and true direction, and that their compass and map are going to show different directions.

    • @northshoresnowpack
      @northshoresnowpack 7 месяцев назад

      I agree. I was trying to find a balance between the basics and a few tricks that are useful for skiing but more emphasis on magnetic declination would have been important. Like I said, I hope people who may not be familiar with the basics will seek proper instruction rather than watching a youtube video and running with it. Thanks for the feedback.

    Why would a GPS watch interfere with a transceiver? Isn't GPS just receiving signals, not sending any out? (Or is it the Bluetooth connection of the watch to your phone that can interfere)
