How Russia kidnaps Ukrainian children, and why
Просмотров 24714 дней назад
Almost 20,000 Ukrainian children have been kidnapped by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine, according to Kyiv’s official data. Russia’s figures are much bigger: it says it has relocated more than half a million of Ukrainian children - and is not going to give them back. This is a horrible, systematic policy of depriving the Ukrainian nation of its future. The Explaining Ukraine podcast invit...

Foreign Affairs’ Daniel Kurtz-Phelan - on America, China, Ukraine, and geopolitics
Просмотров 364Месяц назад
We tend to look at today’s world as a consequence of World War II. Yet, in the first years after that war, there were several directions which the world could have turned. There was a chance that China would not have become communist. There was also a chance that Europe would have become much more communist. A few years ago, Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, the current editor of Foreign Affairs magazine, w...

    Timothy Garton Ash blames democracy for the European Union's inability to manage itself, to control its citizens desires, all the while using "democracy" as a club to (ironically) beat its populist opponents about the head and neck. He confuses democracy with good government. Democracy is a tool of good government. It isn't good government itself. It isn't something to be worshipped. It is a necessary evil, a counterbalance to the power of the elite.

  • @glennmitchell9107
    @glennmitchell9107 5 дней назад

    What decline of power are they talking about? In absolute terms almost every nation is more powerful now than they were at any point in the past. Their weapons are more powerful, their people are healthier and better educated, their industries are more advanced. Only some of the kleptocratic socialist states have slipped backward or got stuck in neutral.

    Have lefty Europeans been living a fantasy since the end of WWII, under the U.S. defense umbrella? Did they think the illusion of peace was real, that they could indulge their socialist dreams with no consequences? Wakey, wakey.

    Such an intelligent discussion and a delight to listen to. We want to hear truth and freedom must be fought for against those that want to control the narrative. Will Trump rip apart the curtain of lies that governments hide behind. Maybe not, maybe corruption wins again. He must protect his family.

    • @junanougues
      @junanougues 3 дня назад

      Trump is the LIE personified! Mafia politics over the rule of law and human progress in the form of expanding democracy for everybody. Trump does not dig facts or voting or equality under the law. Because he is a gangster. What are you talking about?

  • @alanjones5639
    @alanjones5639 6 дней назад

    This discussion really helped some of my understandings. The will to fight for freedoms is not an unfolding process, nor a natural one. Poland and Ukraine being reborn from being dead, from being colonized by empires. Pessimism of the intellect and optimism of the will. I'm thinking that the resistance to democratic forms by authoritarian populists can only be overcome by significant checks on the absurd monopolization of power by the absurdly rich, and by somehow teaching young authoritarians to question their indoctrination by making them part of collective, optimistic efforts.

    • @karelkieslich6772
      @karelkieslich6772 2 дня назад

      I work with young people and anecdotically I find your last point to be the case. The question is how to bring that about? The age of AI, automatisation, atomisation, “social” media (in fact they should be called lonely media), rising inequality etc go directly against being part of a forward-looking optimistic community decision-making collective…

    • @alanjones5639
      @alanjones5639 День назад

      @@karelkieslich6772 I agree. Only a few parents care, and their efforts are often for naught. The focus of public schools would need changing (something like Aldous Huxley's Pala). Because most of those in power don't want reflective, critical thinkers, if it ever happens, it's unlikely to be soon.

    I understand the perspective of Russia to create an alternative to the western culture, because i think we really need diversity, the problem is that it is doing it the wrong way, using coruption, bribery, abuse, lack of style almost barabaric way. I don't like the gay pride parade, don't like free guns in Us, but Japan, China, Taiwan , India, are doing it far better then Russia wich is using brutal 18 th century style. Those are alternative cultures wich don't use brutal force to rule. The true slavic spirit is a free one, czech, slovaks, Ukrainian or Polish style . Rusia seems the backward, mojic ,wich doesn't understand a thing about the world. Doesn't represent the slavs. Shouldn't

      Ukraine is paying Prof Snyder to rewrite the History of Ukraine by Zalenskyy; he uses word splicing to apply different meanings. For example, “Ukrainians Cossacks helped lift the siege of Vienna in 1863; no, it was the Zaporizhzian Cossacks fighting for the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth.” The Crimean Tatars were on the Ottoman side; would they be Ukrainian Tatars in his mind? Ukraine was founded in 1922 and never existed in 1863; they were Polish and Lithuanian; the Cossacks were a Tukric-speaking tribe living in the Dinipro Delta and neither Polish nor Russian. Snyder is more like Politics Cal Commisar Nikkta Khrushchev than a Historian.

    1. What I think about Ukraine: I am humbled, impressed and changed forever by the country and its people. When I first heard the expression "Все буде Україна", I didn't realize it would apply to my heart too, but here we are. 2. What the public opinion is in my country: In Sweden, we are generally happiest when we can reach a consensus, and that consensus was reached about two days after the full invasion. All parties, left to right, were for sending weapons to Ukraine, as were 93% (!) of the population according to a poll of EU countries. So now we've agreed and decided and that's that. We won't be loud about it, there is no need to fight, this is not a polarizing subject, our course is set. Which means we might still be quitetly supporting Ukraine two generations from now, whether Ukraine still needs it or not, because we once agreed it was the correct thing to do. The kind of conflicts we have about Ukraine is: Our right wing government sends Ukraine a radar/reconnoisance plane and our entire stock of pbv302 armoured vehicles. The left wing opposition critcizes them for not including Gripen jets too. Or, a left wing politician mentions the words "future negotiations with russia" and everyone is scandalized, even her own party tries to stop the broadcast. We will disagree vehemently on many things, but Ukraine - no. On this one issue, the dissent is negligible.

    many people will debate and argue about how and when this war started, but like many have said, no one cares about who started it in the end, they care about who won it. A few will always decide for the many and many western countries societies have been too comfortable with being comfortable while the leadership they elect engage in diplomatic discussions world wide. people severely underestimate the situation we are in....the only differences between western countries and ukraine are a few signatures
