A program called Steel Beasts is by far the best and most realistic Amour Simulator. Steel Beasts is many sold to Countries to help train their Armour Crews. It's not cheap, and you have to order it from Sweeden.

Another mecca to visit: Avalon Hill had their HQs and warehouse in the Baltimore area. On Saturdays (in the 70s and early 80s) they hosted large gaming tables in the front area for both board and figure war games. The gaming was free to play for all. During those days, gamers could go back into the warehouse for discount prices on any items and meet with game devs. That really was a great time playing various games! Regards

"Supermarina" is also one of the best naval wargame for me published by "International team"

Squad Leader 1977 took all boards divide up al troops and equipment markers , between German and Russian / American forces ( yes pre dentate ) equaled it out with mines and off board artillery missions . Played 8 hours a day for 8 days then called it a draw . We had to get back to our lives .

I had all of these. Still have most of them (though I don’t think I’ve played Bismarck or Submarine this century). I know it’s a minority opinion but I never cared for Panzer Leader/Blitz. A good companion to Carrier is Tokyo Express, which covers the night actions of the Solomons Campaign. ASL is still my favorite game of all-time.

None of my favourite publishers survive: Avalon Hill, SPI, GDW and Yaquinto are all gone. Some of the best classics continue to be published by GMT, Decision Games, Compass Games, VUCA, Worthington, White Dog Games, NEI, L2 Design Group, Multi Man Publishing, Phalanx (and others), who have done a very good job of modernising the hobby.

Panzer Leader was my very first game. Loved it in 1976, and still love it today! I also loved Victory in the Pacific. It was fun and looked great!

"Richthofen's War" is my favorite vintage title. Not a great flight sim, but boy did it capture the flavor of early air combat.

ASL is the son of Squad Leader. I was fortunate enough to know John Hill, the designer of Squad Leader -he had an amazing mind - RIP John.

Hitler's War by Avalon Hill 1984. Scratched the itch that I wanted Third Reich scratch. It was actually playable.

Air Force and Dauntless my top vintage WW2 game, Battleline version, not the AH version with the funky aircraft Data cards. Gotta love Squad Leader and Submarine as well.

For anyone interested in Tank games, I would suggest getting into What A Tanker by TooFatLardies. Very fun and casual game.

I feel like this would have been better served to discuss the elephant in the room: how difficult it is to learn and play each game. I am, of course, bringing this up because of Advanced Squad Leader. I had a copy, and never played it because of how difficult it was to teach. The rules for machine guns penetrating multiple hexes *during movement* come to mind. Tobruk and Panzer Leader I've played. Tobruk is almost an armor sim, it has hit locations, and you cross-reference the weapon and range vs. target location, and consult a table of armor penetration values to get a result.

"ASL has a rule for everything" that's one way to put it LOL.

Panzer Leader was my very first wargame, way back in 1976. Loved it. Fun and easy to play, and loved the vehicle silhouettes on the counters. Nothing since has really topped it. Also loved Blitzkrieg, Tobruk, and Victory in the Pacific. VITP was really fun to play!

Russian Front, Avalon Hill. Corps/Army level. Step reduction damage/ repair incorporates economics. ZOC/blitz simulates tactical corps level maneuvers. LONG, worth it.

I still have and play the Panzerblitz game I bought from Avalon Hill in the early 1970s. Many others have passed through my games collection over the past 50 years. None better

Great list! I only played pattons best on that list. I liked the game and then lost it when i moved many many years ago.

Tiger leader, Conflict of Heroes and Tide of Iron are NOT tank games. Yes, these games have tanks in them. But they are NOT tank games. COH and TOI are greath games nonetheless.

Great list! I've played most of these with only a few exceptions and agree that they are top tier. Old School Tactical (Flying Pig Games)World at War 85, and Lock 'n Load Tactical are also very good, but those are more combined arms in focus than mostly tanks, although some scenarios are very tank heavy.

Lock and Load's Nations at War series killed and buried Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader for me. I own Conflict of Hereos but haven't gotten it to the table yet.
