Dürer Prints at the Met: Finding Inspiration for Printmaking #woodcut #printmaking #mokuhanga
In this video a make a visit to the Met to see some Dürer woodcuts up close at the Drawings and Print Library. I compare my print with the original "Adoration of the Kings". I then head back to my studio to print the final batch of prints using oil based pigment and compare the final prints to the traditional Mokuhanga printmaking style.
All of these prints are available to view on the Met's website. I encourage you to view these prints more closely to really appreciate their beauty.

    Stephen: Thank you for another interesting video is this series about your Durer print. Very informative. Going to the Met with an appointing to see some particular work is a very intriguing idea. I'd love to have the two versions (water based vs ink based) you mention. when do you expect them to be available on your website for purchase? All the best, Matthew

    Nicely done, as always! Tks for sharing it. About the lines from each technique, one possibility is (just an observation) that the water seems to “soften” the edges of the wood while brushing it, in contrast to the roller and the oil (heavier) flattening the top of the block

    The scale of the original is a bit had to imagine. There was an exhibit at the Morgan in 2022 where they exhibited extremely small wood block prints made from Holbein designs. Those German carvers must have had super vision. Wondering if you happened to see that show? "Holbein: Capturing Character" Feb 11 thru May 15, 2022.

    I believe that "blob in the sky" is actually a chunk of plaster fallen off the back wall revealing the stones in the wall. There are a couple of cracks in the plaster below that. The scene appears to be in a falling down barn with a hole in the thatch roof and a bunch of plaster already having fallen off the walls. the "blob" was possibly included to break up the large white space.

    How did the top area of blue not ink over the top of the tallest building since it had already been printed?

    • @stephenwiniecki
      @stephenwiniecki 15 дней назад

      Not exactly clear about what you're asking? There is a carved wood block for every separate color. The reason the tallest building didn't get any of the blue in this impression is because there is a carved out relief area. The paper cannot dip down inside the carved areas and pick up ink.

    • @gdk5324
      @gdk5324 15 дней назад

      He has lots of works that are engravings, but also woodcuts. This print in particular is puzzling because it's listed as a woodcut on the Met's website. it was able to be so small and detailed because Durer did not carve it into woodblock. this was one of his copper plate engravings, and that method of engraving allows for much finer details to be achieved in the print.

      That's interesting. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has this listed as a woodcut. @orion7741 Where are you getting this information from? There is not much information on the web about this print that I can find. If I had to guess, I'd say it's an etching or a wood engraving. If it were an engraving on a copper plate, the lines and hatching would be much smoother and clean. I plan to visit this print soon at the Met.

You and others have inspired me to try to do mokuhanga printmaking, but between: 1) not knowing where to find gampi paper for a good transfer 2) not knowing where to source those types of cherry woodblocks 3) getting very poor results using water-based ink/brushes to print, I've been sticking with my monotoned "western style" printmaking, heavily inspired by Durer. It's always been my ultimate goal to combine these two styles, but haven't figured out how. I'm very excited to see what your end result will be with this project.
