London on my Brompton - Day 3: Lea Valley and Epping Forest
This was the 3rd day of my Brompton tour to London and the Lea Valley. As explained in the first 2 videos, I decided to do this tour while recovering from suspected tendonitis in my knee; I had rested for a week or so and now I wanted to give it some light work without overdoing it and damaging it further. I also wanted to do another bike tour before winter came.
My mileage had to be kept quite low for the sake of my knee and I thought a few short breaks would be helpful too. My route plan contained 2 loops - to the East and then West of the Lea Valley, but prudence, dusk and a long time spent on interesting and restful breaks meant I could only complete the East loop in Epping Forest.

London on my Brompton - Day 2: Greenwich and the Lea Valley

November 5th 2024 This was the second day of my London/Lea Valley tour whose aim was partly to rest my knee. I wanted to visit the Greenwich museums because sailing, boats and navigation has been a lifelong interest, but I also considered riding around more sights in the city; I opted against the latter as I had found the previous day unsatisfactory due to my lack of knowledge of where to go an...

      Thanks for the kind thoughts! The colours really were glorious; although each camera I used rendered them differently, I wouldn't say any version was not a good representation of what I saw. I'm no historian, but I do like to see and understand things - I am glad you like the result. @@johnm-wv6bo Yes, this was a very "chilled" day in which I dawdled and let time fly by! I've always wondered if I could have climbed a mast - I don't think so! I think electric bikes have great potential for good, but I share your concern about their potential speed and acceleration - I was knocked off by a badly ridden privately owned one a couple of months ago! The illegal (on UK roads and rights of way) overpowered ones without speed regulation (which are mopeds in a legal sense) are a big concern, especially when they use bicycle and shared user paths. It does depend on how they are ridden, of course, but one sees many examples where their speed is not compatible with other cyclists and pedestrians. I'm glad you liked it. I must say that I expected riding in London to be much scarier than I found it to actually be, but I used only routes that were selected by the cycle.travel website and did it on a quiet grey Sunday afternoon so it was not really representative of normal conditions. But it was good to see some seriously usable cycle lanes and quite a lot of people using them. I have heard that the Round Pond was used for model yacht racing and I would have been really pleased if I could have seen some of that. It's a big pond for a toy boat! Thanks for the really nice feedback on the videos. As a video producer yourself, you appreciate that the amount of time which goes into editing a video is not inconsiderable; it means a lot when people give positive feedback like that. Thank you for taking the time! I have quite a few more little videos in the pipeline and I hope you will enjoy those too - but I have a lot more editing to do first!

      Those electric bikes had much better acceleration and speed than I had expected. I think they would be more versatile for a tourist in the city rather than having your own precious bike as I did and not knowing where to safely park it. This was certainly not my natural environment: I'm definitely a country bumpkin but, thanks to good cycle lanes and a quiet Sunday afternoon, I found this city experience surprisingly calming!

      Thank you for the nice comment and for your concern about my poor knee which is very kind and wise! Anyway - the injury really happened on this trip to Yorkshire although I had probably done damage over the previous couple of weeks. I gave it a week or two of rest with no cycling at all before the Short Ride video - but that Short Ride persuaded me to rest it for longer. Since then I have been building it back up with more miles and more hills - I think it is ok now but I'm still going slowly and listening for any hint of pain from the tendon, and so far it seems ok. The Neo does have a good combination of price and simplicity - until I came across it, I thought a drone would be too time consuming to use and too expensive - the technology and software is astonishing now, and I guess that DJI must be pricing the Neo keenly for high sales volumes. I have heard that the X1 has its advantages though! One does see a lot of unlit bicycles - often ridden by people in dark clothing. Short and sweet - the trip and the video, showing that adventures don't need to be epic to be worthwhile and rewarding. @@davidwalsh566 Thank you for the nice comment. It would be nice to think that cyclists didn't cause danger on the roads, but of course careless cyclists do - these had no lights and completely disregarded the rules of the road, expecting other traffic to see and keep clear of their unpredictable actions at a junction which has very poor lines of sight and little room to manoeuver. Unfortunately the reputation of all cyclists ends up tarnished by the behaviour of a few and that devalues our requests for more consideration and better facilities. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It really was a great experience even though I lacked both the fitness and skill to ride as much as I'd have liked. The Peak District has some beautiful places hidden away for you to discover. Thanks for the lovely comment. I hope you enjoy your rides!

      @@essextrails That's very nice of you! But I saw what proper mountain bikers can do, and by comparison I'm just a bloke who pushes his bike up hills and sometimes rides it down them if it's not too bumpy. Wow the scenery is fabulous, I must get up to the Peak District, but I think I will stick with the tarmac lanes! I can't imagine a steam train going around those tight corners of the old track either!

      I have really enjoyed my trips around the Peak District this year - I would recommend it to anyone. There are some lovely routes on railway paths - the High Peak, Tissington and Monsal trails which are easily rideable for most people (I have several videos which include sections of them) and there are lots of other road routes as well as footpaths if you fancy a walk. As you say, the scenery is fabulous!

  • @davidwalsh566

    You certainly like a challenge! A lot of hike-a-bike on steep and rugged terrain that would be tricky for a cyclist unencumbered by all the kit you were carrying, plus the added distraction of filming, and without sufficient water! Cycling on routes intended for horses and pedestrians can be a struggle; I know from experience on coastal paths in Scotland. Next time will be easier - you'll pare down the kit and maybe pick a smoother route. The Sandstone Way in Northumberland is said to be a nice trip. Great effort, well done!

    • @RAsadventures-zr1ge
      @RAsadventures-zr1ge 2 месяца назад

      Thank you for that. It certainly was an exhausting ride for me, and it widened my cycling experience disproportionately to its mileage or duration. I do need to cut down the weight carried - but just having a better idea of what to expect will help, as will not having the wrong GPX file! I quite enjoyed the experience of being a bit "out of my depth". I hadn't heard of the Sandstone Way, but I've looked it up and am quite excited about having a go. It's a fabulous area and I'd love to explore it off-road. Thanks for your thoughtful comment once again!

    Lovely production of an amazing adventure, well done. At 17, in August 1968, I cycled solo from the (English) Lakes to Cape Wrath in 11 days. Fascinating to now realize the lighthouse was still manned then and for decades after. A very memorable trip!

      Thank you; I'm glad you liked it. That must have been an epic trip in 1968. There are lots more cycle routes now, but I wonder if, in 1968, the road to the lighthouse at Cape Wrath may have been a little better than it is now?

    • @studebaker4217
      @studebaker4217 3 месяца назад

      @@ra5585I suppose it was epic, but at 17 it was "just a tour" in those days. I think it embedded the "Adventure Gene" into me (for which I'm massively grateful). You may not be aware that in the 1960s, a "Cycling Weekly" writer, Rex Coley, created the Cape Wrath Fellowship. I still have the badge sewn on to my old Carradice saddle bag, and even the Certificate somewhere!

    • @RAsadventures-zr1ge
      @RAsadventures-zr1ge 3 месяца назад

      Thanks. I wonder what adventures that gene took you on? I am aware of the Cape Wrath Fellowship, but I had no idea how or when it started. I should think it was a lot harder even to get to the start of the trail in the 1960s, and so really only for those who were prepared to make an effort. And, of course, you got there the hard way! The ride to Cape Wrath was a big highlight on our trip - much more so than John O'Groats. The first time I went there was just a year before the trip in the video and the mist came down as I rode across the peninsula and made it feel very atmospheric and lonely and bitterly cold! A great place to visit!

    Well done on completing the ride, particularly in view of the disruption caused by the weather. You've shown that it is still possible to plan a long-distance trip around YHA accommodation, despite the closures in recent years, and also that a bike is the perfect machine for exploring the countryside. 'The horse that needs no hay', as someone once referred to the bicycle! Apart from the near head-on with the chap in the blue jacket near the waggonway, I wonder whether you had any other close shaves on the trip? Also, how was the back by the time you got to Newcastle? I find that a bike ride usually irons out such aches and pains.

    • @RAsadventures-zr1ge
      @RAsadventures-zr1ge 7 месяцев назад

      Alas, this time cycling didn't cure my back - but it doesn't seem to make it any worse either and time seems to be the best healer on this occasion. There weren't really any close shaves on the tour - apart from the blue-jacket guy and we just laughed about that. There were one or two ( and probably no more than that) close passes on roads (mainly when I was not riding far enough from the kerb to occupy my lane) but on the whole drivers were very considerate and seemed to be responding to the structures of the latest highway code, and I always try to make it easy for drivers who politely hang back to get past when the opportunity arises. Thanks for watching the series! I'm hoping to produce some more videos before too long, but first I need to go for a bike ride or two!

    38 mph is quite fast on a laden touring bike in the rain - you're not such a sloth after all! I wonder whether you had chance to visit St. Edmund's Church, 12th century apparently- it would be just your thing. Edmundbyers YHA looks very cosy; I must visit some time. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

      I guess even sloths can go fast with gravity - by the bottom of the hill I had forgotten what the pedals were for! No, sorry - no church visit in Edmundbyers; to be honest the thought of a nice hot shower was eclipsing thoughts of anything more adventurous, and the only sign I was looking for was the one that said "Youth Hostel"! It was a very nice hostel - I recommend it highly! Thanks for continuing to watch; I really appreciate your nice, thoughtful comments.
