CN Rescues VIA! 23h late Ocean in Bedford NS with CN 2337 leading 3 F40s
VIA 14 (the Ocean) that departed Montreal on the evening of December 15, 2023, had an absolutely disastrous run. The train was initially delayed leaving Montreal due to late connecting trains from Ottawa and Toronto (due to trespasser fatalities). They left around 3h behind schedule, but the train would only reach just shy McMasterville (before Mont St-Hilaire) when the lead locomotive failed. After some time stopped, they backed the train to Montreal to add a new lead locomotive. They re-departed from Montreal just after 3am, now around 8h behind schedule.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the next morning the train collided with farm equipment (tractor hauling a trailer) at a farm crossing ...

Drummondville trains - CN 305 and VIA LRC and Venture

On December 13, 2023, I took an early morning train (VIA 20) from Montreal to Drummondville QC and returned on VIA 35, as a little excursion to try out the new Siemens Venture trains. While in Drummondville, I had a chance to catch CN 305 (Moncton-Montreal) crossing the Rivière Saint-François, with CN 8880 leading and 3887 as DPU. Next, we see VIA 22, running a bit behind schedule, making its s...
VIA Rail Ocean at Springhill Jct “station”

On December 8, 2023, VIA's westbound Ocean is right on time as it rolls by the "station" at Springhill Junction, Nova Scotia. Springhill Jct. is one of the flag stops on the route; the train will stop if passengers are booked to board or alight the train here, but they will also stop if a passenger is seen by the train crew. Just before I started filming, the engineer gave a few quick blasts on...
VIA’s Ocean races by Shubenacadie NS - summer 2023

At this point they're just under an hour having left Halifax, and about half an hour away from their next stop at Truro. Elephant-style F40s on the Ocean - first time since 2020!

December 9, 2022 delivered a now-rare sight on VIA #15.     • @timberley512
      @timberley512 11 месяцев назад

      When I was last around, they were running 3 trains to the plant a day, Monday-Friday (so three trips to the loader in Sydney; first one very early morning, next mid-morning, and third mid-day/early afternoon). The exact number of trains can vary through the year with demand at the power plant, and if there’s a plant shutdown (for maintenance) they won’t run at all.

      Indeed, NBSR acquired several and there were a few others that went to the Louisville and Indiana Railroad (which also adopted basically the Devco paint scheme). The SCR kept a total of 5 units, and at any given time they usually have 4 running, with a pair on each of the two trains. The other unit is in the shop for work, and they cycle that through on a regular basis. The hopper fleet is all ex-Devco of course, with a lot of cars stored at their shop at Victoria Jct. The shop facility continues maintaining that fleet as well, and you can see many of the cars have a patchwork of replaced panels on their sides.

    The second locomotive might be dead in tow but the HEP must be working since I don't think a single locomotive can pull that train and provide HEP.

    • @timberley512
      @timberley512 Год назад

      The single unit technically can power and provide HEP (at least these days with the separate CAT units in the rebuilds), but it's not ideal and they can't maintain full track speed. They were pretty slow going through the rest of the day because of this, and as I noted in the description, VIA sent an extra locomotive east on that night's train 14 so they could swap it over to this 15 at the meet overnight. From what I could tell when they passed, nothing was running on the second unit.

My friend and I have chosen to go in style, one double compartment each, full meal service, etc. Too bad those Park cars aren't used now, as far as I can see. But it will still be lovely. I used to travel this route to Amherst from Kingston in the 70s when I was at university there, en route from PEI. I was stuck once in the northern Matapedia valley in a blizzard and completed the trip, after many hours stuck, by buses around the Gaspe into Moncton. Via arranged for 2-3 closed restaurants to open to feed us on the winter bus trip. But then it was "sit up all the way" for this student.
