Sinking or Sailing on the notorious Columbia River. Learning new skills to sail around the world.
Seven months ago, I walked away from the corporate grind. I quit my career of 11 years, liquidated my 401k, and stepped into the unknown. It took three years of battling fear and facing the reality that, as a result of my cervical spine condition, I’m at risk of paralysis. That truth pushed me to finally choose a life worth living. I hated my job. I despised the corporate machine.
But I have always harbored a wild, impossible dream: to sail around the world. So I quit, bought a sailboat, and threw myself into a life I knew nothing about. No sailing experience. No roadmap. Just blind faith in a better future.

Hey, I’m Oliver. I’m outfitting my 33ft sailboat to sail around the world, but for now, I’m figuring it out one step at a time. This is part 1 of a solo weekend trip up the Columbia River. Let’s see how it goes.
Episode 1. Follow my journey as I gear up to sail around the world. Starting with an oil change.

Hello RUclips, my name is Oliver. My cat Phoenix and I are outfitting my boat Phoenix to sail around the world follow my journey and I can assure you it will be a journey.
I’m in Vancouver and would love for sailing time if you would like someone to join you.
Add If you want to really accelerate your sailing skill, find the local racing scene and get on one of the crews. I sailed for years (self taught) and thought I was good, then I joined a race crew and realized I had a lot to learn. Stay curious. There is always more to learn, even old salts are still learning new tricks. Practice sailing without all the fancy electronics. My first boat only had running lights and a cabin light. I give thanks that I learned to sail without reliance on instruments when I see people who fall apart when their equipment fails. I now have instruments and greatly appreciate their convenience, but they should be another tool. Your brain and senses are primary. Watch West Marine for sales on foul weather gear. The West Marine brand has some good discounts. I spent years trying to “save” money with normal rain gear and I can tell you, foulies are a game changer. And no jeans in the wet winter! I learned that one the hard way during my first winter race! Oh yeah, check the weather before you go out! Haha I am up in Gig Harbor, WA. Not too far away. It would be cool to connect IRL sometime.
Great intro bro 😎
Thanks dude 😂
Out on deck without LJ. Or harnes is just foolish , bad habbit to get on a boat. Only takes a split sec , sail was up , cough of wind your in the drink , goodbye boat .
Go S huging coastbline with out proper navigation youll end uo on the rocks 30 miles min .
Wow, so you open your video with motor boaters as losers? mmmmm. Your Disrespect on the waterways is disgusting. What is your deal dude? We all know the ocean will set you straight. Hope there will be a mariner left that will risk their lives to rescue your entitled ass. Learn some respect. Unsubscribing.
I would suggest a full set of filters, belts, and lubricants along with the tools necessary. The engine is the 'get out of a 💩pile for free card. When everything has gone wrong, that engine can get you to someplace secure. Have enough to be able to replace a couple lengths of rigging. A spare pulley, or, cheaper and smaller, say couple frictionless rings. An assortment of quality hoseclamps and zip ties, and stainless screws and bolts. Or even cheap regular hardware. It's for an emergency, so you can always get back and then worry about the expensive stuff.
Took a screen shot of your comment and a saving it in my notes 😂 thanks man!
Theirs a saying in the military 🪖 when u face ur fears they will disappear. Enjoy ur life brother one days at a time 🫡 ✌️ from the 503
BTW in the diesel world always check ur egt (exhaust temps) get cheap sensor and gauge find the sweet spot and u will never burn any internals
“Losers” ….😂
Got plans to head south brother?
Hawaii first!
@@Sailing_With_Phoenix oh, you're on the west coast? We'll, I look forward to seeing your journey. Starting mine out of panama city here soon.
make your gear redundant if you're going offshore, things will break!
Inspiring as always. Interested to see where your journey will take you. Best of luck!
Thank you!
A good tip for peeing over the side of a boat is to attach yourself to that boat. When peeing, blood pressure can monateraly drop causing lightheadedness. As a result peeing over the side of a boat is one of, if not the main cause, of falling overboard. Do it often enough and, well swimming is in your future.
Nice video! Do you have a lot of pain in your cervical area of spine? From watching other sailing channels, they seem to always carry spare electronics etc.
I have a constant level of low pain. But it fluctuates with stress and cold. I appreciate the advice!
FFS get a lifevest on! Always. One thing that can 'go wrong' is that you stand on deck by the boom and the wind catches it and it knocks you into the water. What model is your boat anyway (she's impressive)?
If I get hit by the boom I’m done anyways. I have a compromised cervical spine. But when I go off shore I will have jack lines and a harness
Bro keep the dream up life is a lesson 💯. Best sailors start with no knowledge 👌. Are u base in pdx area?
Subscribe 4 the ride 4 sure I'm located in beaverton. Since I got out of the military my goal is exactly what ur doing be safe out there brother ✌️ ☮️
Yeah dude just on the Columbia river on Hayden island!
@Sailing_With_Phoenix not far from here .if u ever need help doing what ever sanding ,wrenching cleaning I'm down to help a extra hand is hard to come by this days .
I wanna hear your story, how you got the boat, what your plans are, who your inspiration was etc etc! Do some awesome content and people will come! im already subscribed!
Unfortunately many are radical and violet but it must also be said some are kind and modest people too, but in saying that hundreds of millions hate Europe and its people the attacks and invasion of Christian, Jewish, Sikh, Hindhu Buddhist and European countries have been going on for over a thousand years history does not lie..
Great stuff! Excited to follow along!
Awesome, thank you!
One time the motor failed on my 28' sloop while I was out. I sailed it back single hand, through the marina, and into my slip. The harbor master met me on the dock and told me it was the most amazing thing he had ever seen... and to NEVER do that again lol. Keep living the dream, man!
Congrats on living the dream! You’re smart to sail as much as possible to learn the boat. I just sold my starter boat after 7 years and I’m about done replacing the engine on my “last” boat, the one I’m taking around the world. See you out there.
Yes man congrats to you as well!! Fair winds!
In my experience, circa 5K miles offshore (yes I’m a noob too), the ocean is like being in an abusive dysfunctional relationship. One second she is showing you beautiful sunsets, and the next she is beating the living Sh@# out of you. The ocean exposes all of your shortcuts, ignorances, and shortcomings. Your survival odds are littered determined before you depart from your gear decisions and knowledge. Be humble. Check out Kevin Boothby “How to sail oceans”. Please be serious, don’t put other sailors lives at risk coming to rescue you. Your enthusiasm will take you far. Oneday, after a whole bunch of “ask me how i know” you will be a great sailor and mentor. I will subscribe to watch your progress. And like other sailors commented, RULE #1 Stay on the Boat. USE A HARNESS, YESTERDAY! Fair winds and tip my hat.
Nice fix
Thank you!
There are a large variety of different antifreeze now on the market. They all do not play nice together. Bring a sample (mostly for color) to the parts store to be as certain as possible you get the right stuff. Also, there should be a paper manual for that engine somewhere in a drawer. Check the coolant specs. If you are to switch coolant types, be certain to fully flush all residue of the previous coolant type. There are claims, I haven't heard anything I would call facts, that the mixing of some coolants can do damage to internal cast iron and aluminum parts. My guess, and just a guess, is some sort of galvanic reaction occurs when some coolants mix with another coolant. Hope this makes at least some sense to you.
Probably a good idea to start with a boat tour and add your boat info to your profile 👍🏼
Like new sailing channels and their journeys. Happy sailing
I appreciate that!
hi, i follow you on instagram.. i like very much your story and your boat: which model/shipyard is? thank you very much from italy Dario
🤣🤣🤣 hey man! Thanks for following my RUclips! Just incase someone else reads this since you already know 😂 it’s a compac 33
Thanks for video. Can you please tell what is your boat model amd size?

@@alexparkison4593❤ idk why but that made me so happy haha
😂 well, feel free to subscribe and find out how long I last.
Important tip for your fuel shut off cable... Put the inner wire completely out of the sheathe. Then, using a chainsaw bar tip grease gun (cheap and handy for hundreds of things), pump 3 pumps from that grease gun per foot of cable length. Thread the center wire back in, you will have some grease pushed all the way through, and hook it all back up. That 1 time grease will last years. First time it starts to move feeling restricted, repeat with about 1½ pumps/foot of cable. 👍🏻
Oh dude that’s a great idea haha thank you! I swear I have been learning everything sailors that comment 😂
@Sailing_With_Phoenix nope. Farmer here. A cheap backup is a cheap choke cable (basically the same thing) avaliable at any Autoparts store. They are less durable, but super easy to route around all the nooks and crannies. Just beginning my sailing adventures too.
what kind of boat is it or did I miss it in the video?
Com-Pac 33.
He wont last long , goes out on deck solo no harnes , life jacket , nor a lag line w swim ladder. Saftey 1st . Wont last 2 mins in Columbia rvr in winter.
28 ft Triton in cali $2 grand one owner . You wont last long , nvr go on deck without a harnes lag line w life vest. Solo sailing not a vacation . # 1 rule
Need a lag line with swim ladder nvr make it back on board .
Yeah I’m planning on getting all of the things before I leave.
Rule # 1 nvr go out on deck without a harness , life jacket , saftey line w/swimlater . Solo sail is not a vacation
I agree. I need to get one and start getting into the habit of using it too for when I cross to Hawaii.
Hose on a boat
Ah, such a relaxing video.
Awesome haha I’m glad you liked it!
You might be able to swap the knobs but who cares it works. I just fixed mine it's so nice to not have to go to the engine room and cut the fuel to get the engine to shut down. Alot safer too.
I tried the other knob. It was just a cheep knob that was like built into the system lol but I know I'll be checking the garbage from time to time for smaller knobs. Oddly enough one of my phone mounts has the same size threads so l might just put that on😂
You need to protect your thumbs when using the winch. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😂😂😂
Thank you! ⛵️🏴☠️
Good Winds my friend 🙏⛵⚓🤿🧭
Yo!! Hey thank you!!! 🙏
Can't wait to watch your channel grow! Your friend from @happysailingpec 😎
Yes, you must oil the seal on the filter or it will be stuck the next time you try to take it off. You don't want to over fill the engine or else the oil, that is setting in the oil pan at the bottom of the engine, will reach the crankshaft as the engine is running and as the crank is spinning it will cause the oil to foam. Then it will not provide good lubrication as the oil is being pumped around the engine. A tiny bit of overfull will not hurt. Oil Filter, tighten until tight and then 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. Just so you know, NEVER Ever, Ever ! try to remove the coolant ( radiator) cap when the engine is hot ! The coolant circulates under pressure to raise it's boiling point and if you try to remove the cap under pressure it will spray hot coolant on you and burn you badly. Have good luck, I'll follow a long and add a thing or two here or there only when I can help. Have a nice Day.
I love that man thank you!!!!! Literally everything I’ve been learning is from people on social media critiquing what I do haha so I appreciate the advice man and will take any I can get!
All excellent info, except that boat engines are often cooled with the external water the boat is sitting in. Some have a water to water heat exchanger which will have pressurized coolant system, others just pump water straight from the hull into the engine, then back out through the hull.
@@goatman3828 That is true and I hadn't thought of that. I do think I see a pressure cap on his radiator a couple of times in the video though. Once around the 3:17 mark and again at 8:23-8:39 so it has a pressure system of some kind he will not want to open when hot.
At 2:16 you turn your face away from the engine and reach over the top and behind engine with baggy clothing on, the fully exposed alternator belt merrily spinning away at over 800-1000rpm. You are asking for a nasty accident doing that. Look forward to your adventures.
I appreciate that man 😂 I was aware of the belt but should probably have simply not worn the baggy clothes lol
He wont last long , goes on deck , no harnes life jacket no lag lines w swim ladder , Columbia rvr 2 mins tops , can't just hop back on board . Nvr leave copit of sailer with a riggen harbes n saftey ladder if no swim deck
I look forward to your videos and adventure!
Thank you man! Strap in!
That"s quite the leap of faith you took. Good luck,
You think so? I think it’s a leap of faith to work 50 years in hopes that one day (maybe) I can do something like this.
It's cool to see what trying to get into cruising can look like from a more realistic perspective of not knowing anything about it in advance. I look forward to more videos and good luck with the project.
🙏 thank you! Strap in it should be a wild ride 😂
Hey man, good to see you back on youtube. God be with you on your journey
Dude that’s awesome of you to say man!!! Thank you! ❤
I wish you good fortune.
