Contemplating Van Setups and Lighting Small Sets for Clients
Hey all!
Today we're discussing this job that I did a month or so ago. Pretty great shoot with great people. It was a two setup ordeal, with the first one being outside and the second setup being an interview.
Also, I discussed in the first part of the video some modifications I am thinking of making to the van. Let me know if you have any input on that or on the interview setup. Always love hearing other people's experiences and what they've learned!

A quick talk about the DMX Setup I've been using the past few months. This video is a few months old and I'm only now getting around to uploading, but the information is all still pretty accurate! Apologies for the sparse uploads. I've been out of town on a feature the past month or so. Am glad to be back home, though, and am excited to get back in the swing of things with shoots around here. Hello everyone! Excited to share this video and hope that it is helpful. Doing a rig like this can help you achieve looks that you really can't achieve any other way, so it's neat to be able to share a bit about how it's done. solid video. didn't know i needed a video about clamps until i watched!
These interiors are just interviews ?
@@robinprobyn1971 yes, the exteriors were short b roll scenes and the interiors were interviews.
@@cfl4286 wow a lot of gear for one person interviews :)
@ It’s all perspective. We just did an interview setup where we blacked out the entire camera side. Four 12x12 solids next to each other, 6 floppies, two Nova panels ceiling mounted with chimeras, lots of other lights here and there in the backgrounds, etc. Some people would say that’s a small setup. Again, all a matter of perspective!
@@cfl4286 Yes true !
I do think the roof rack is the move... as I say, working out of my Hyundai Elantra lmao
@@Cinegavo I hear ya! Keep grinding my man!! It’ll come.
Thanks for sharing! What C-stand cart is that? How is it going up your ramp?
@@CineInThe6 it’s a hand truck style c stand cart from Modern Studio with only two wheels rather than 4. I usually don’t load it up with all 13 stands. It goes up the ramp pretty easily as long as the tires are aired up lol I don’t let anyone else push it up except me because I don’t want anyone who doesn’t know what they’re doing to get hurt.
I love slim chickens 😋
Very Nice! I like it! BTS
Great video man. Any chance you could please list the items you mention here? I'd love to check them out

For creating the haze, were you using a fogger or was it just from a fire?
Thanks for sharing man! It's great to see how others do things on set.
how did you get get your jobs ?
IATSE 80 has worked with lift manufacturers to put out supplemental manuals for rigging from various kinds of lifts, and its a great resource that is easily searchable/findable
Cool stuff man. What’s that wooden cart for your rags and flags?
It's a homemade flag basket. I keep some scrap gel cuts and and wag flags in there as well as a regular assortment of flags, nets, etc.
Great inspiration, thx!!
To much haze 😅
Bro, these are so dope! I dont get to use as much equipment since im on a ford transit connect. Can you do a van walkthrough?
@@JesusMartinezCreates You can fit a good amount of stuff in a connect! Some of the ACs around here have connects with camera carts they roll out for each job. Pretty awesome. Yes, I’ll probably make a dedicated video of it eventually. I have a brief walkthrough video of in a previous video. I think it’s titled “Loading a grip van” or something like that.
@@cfl4286 Oh I am using it as a G&E got about a 1 ton in there and then my pelicans for production. Its too tight though, I can only fit 3 combos and 10 cstabds plus a couple air stands. I want more room and eventually a 2400 nanlux
@@JesusMartinezCreates you and me both on the 2400b haha! Would love to replace my 4K with one. Yeah, the connects do get a little cramped for G&E stuff. But hey, make that connect work for you! Pay it all off (if you have a loan on anything) and then upgrade to a larger one :)

great stuff!
At 3:00 why not use nova 600c diffusion and grid blasting thru a cloth that’s not as thick as the magic cloth ? Would this control spill ?
@@creativegreatsvisuals you could do it that way an achieve similar results. Magic cloth is a DP favorite so I like going that direction more. About spill, you may have a little less spill that way. We weren’t worried as much about spill in this scenario since there was already a lot of ambient daylight in the room.
What would u say is more important to add to 2 aputure 600s ? 2 nova p600c’s? , 1 aputure 1200d ? or nanlux 1200b?
Is the nova 600c easier to set up than intellytech? What light is softer on the skin ?
@@creativegreatsvisuals yes, any panel is going to be easier and faster to set up than a Mat light. Mat lights usually require some assembly no matter the brand. They’re both the same size so they’d each require diffusion if you were to use them as key lights.
My kind of video
For the fire effect, I try to use 2 or more light fixtures and mix hard and soft light. Also have a soft light that is always on, at 3200-4000k but on low intensity as a fill/wrap. And depend on the scene. I added a cooler kevin at very low intensity on the far side and of course edge light.
My cheap solution for wireless control is a dedicated 7 inch android tablet with sidus link, nanlink, sun seeker, and the Holly view app. And that's it. It's a $100 Lenovo tablet that is not very powerful, but it doesn't need to be just for those few apps.
And since they are so cheap, I'm going to get a second one. So I don't need to switch back between wireless camera feed or control lights.
Pool noodle classic.
Could you do a walk through on CRMX, sACN, and what your DMX package is for newbies?
Would be happy to! It can be rather confusing and expensive, but is totally worth it in my opinion. I’ll put out a video about CRMX/DMX in the next couple weeks.
Hi did the half scrim for the HMI produce a hard or soft/feathered cut between the border of the two halves? If you looked closely could you see it as an obvious effect on the subject/scene? Also wondering if they could be repurposed for use with LEDs? Or do the COB+reflector mess with the effectiveness of the half scrim? (Since on the HMI it sits much closer to the bulb) Thank you!
Hi do you know what the overall budget looked like for the commercial? Also the shoot was only just for one deliverable? Or were multiple TikTok videos shot? Thank you!
@@108u9 no idea the total budget! As far as I know it was for one spot. It also wasn’t a very long day, so that leads me to believe it was only one.
Great Video BRO!
Thank you my friend
Nicely done! I'll have to check out those last two clamps. I haven't used them before. And as far as coining Kupo as ripping off Cartellini clamps, US patents (and patents in most countries) don't last forever, so since the Cartellini clamp was invented in 1992, its patent likely expired in 2009-ish.
Hadn’t thought about that! I know there’s several copycats out there. Impact, BHs brand, has their version. Not sure if they’re based in the US. As far as I can see, the kupo version is an improvement on the cardellini design. Time will tell how it holds up long term. Something that I forgot to mention in the video, it also doesn’t seize up or bind near as much, which is a huge plus. Cheers!
Not boring at all! Thanks for taking the time to explain!
Glad you enjoyed!
too many light fixtures. How many people have the budget?
Short films and self funded stuff probably not often. Producers pay for this without blinking an eye for commercials and movies though :)
amazing and free lesson
Thanks you!
1200b ftw
New subscriber! Love this content.
Love the p600 on a rolling stand and the double net.
Thanks for the great video! I do think the better comparison would be your C boom vs. a steel boom arm. What does your C boom give you that say an Impact 86 inch boom arm doesn't? A menace arm would still be used in place of either if there's a heavy light involved or if the usable extension is much beyond 8 feet, no?
Absolutely! For one, the C Boom goes out longer than an impact arm (Not that I recommend going full extension all the time LOL but it can do it with a lightweight unit). But the biggest benefit for me is that if I don't use the C stand as a boom, then it's still useful to me as a c stand. Whereas a boom arm is mainly only useful for that one thing. So it really comes down to a matter of space savings. I have a van, so converting a stand to a boom is very valuable to me. If I had a large box truck then I'd probably carry a couple baby and junior boom arms just for the simplicity and speed :) hope this helps!
@@cfl4286 Good points! Thanks for the explanation

At 3:14 do you remember how far away your Nova was and what was the light level?
It was a little over a meter away. I don’t remember the output level, but can tell by looking it was probably about half brightness give or take maybe 10%. Those novas are bright.
@@cfl4286 Thanks, yes they are. I have 2 p300c's. I also have a Forza 720B and 2 Forza 300B's along with older Forza 500. I was thinking of getting a p600c that is why I was asking. I notice you use it a lot as your key. I just came across your channel the other day and subscribed.
@@RobertJohnPhotography nice kit! IMO the P600c is the best soft panel on the market. It is good as a key with the aputure softbox as long as you can keep it close to the subject. Farther away and it’s best to diffuse it with a 4x4 or something like that. Thanks for the subscription!
@@cfl4286best on market ? No the new Arri sky panels are but very expensive so nova 600c is best quality option for most
or … 🤦🏻♂️ a Menace arm Junior receiver, already has the rings …. sorry to spam your comments - hopefully the Algorithm accepts this offering on your behalf 😅
But otherwise, if you want to get FANCY then the butt end of the C-stand is junior size so any Junior receiver should work. Maybe get just a Junior receiver and weld a ring to hook into? Or if you have a Baby Junior receiver adapter? Junior receiver goes on c-stand column and you could sling through the baby receiver Or, heck even a lollipop - attach the Junior receiver to the C-stand and then sling through the grip head
Any of those options would work! I tend to go with the legs because they're already on there, but yeah a lollipop would work just fine or a menace arm junior receiver would work great too since it has the ring built in. For me it's the speediness and the simplicity of it, so leaving the legs on is a good option provided you're not working in tight spaces with low ceilings. If so, then it's better to go one of the routes you mentioned. Several years ago, when I was just hooking the ratchet to the base of the C Stand, I had it pop off and swing down. Fortunately, no one was underneath, and it was only a small lite mat on it, so it didn't come crashing down with a ton of force. Mostly just freaked me out and made me realize I wasn't being smart. Since then I've been very particular about having a solid mounting point like on an actual menace, sometimes to the annoyance of the guys I work with, haha.
I sometimes do this with the legs hanging down go around the leg assembly column between two of the legs with the ratchet strap. Because you’re tying BACK towards the stand base, there’s enough tension that it won’t slip off the legs when they hang down.
Love your setup bro! I want a high roof for my next setup. Great stuff!
Thanks brother! High roofs are the bomb. I love being able to stand up haha you’re in Arkansas too, right? I’m up in Bentonville. Love your channel!
what are the attachments you used to hook up the lights to speedrail? mega coupler?
Pipe clamps with junior receivers. You can get them at modern studio or matthews SE
Really like this vlog for grip related stuff! I’ve started started getting more into production videography and videos like this are SUPPERR helpful even just for learning terminology!
Always more to learn! Stay tunes and I’ll be coming out with more video vlogs and instruction videos. Menace arms, wall spreaders, large frames, tenting windows, condor rigging. all that kind of stuff I’m planning to get to eventually! Hopefully it’ll be helpful to everyone.
Great vlog! Nice to see another G&E vlogger here on YT! Keep it coming!
Just subbed!
Thank you sir! Love your channel. You’re a huge inspiration!
Great video, how much do you got paid for one job as a gaffer?
It’s project dependent. Usually between $600 and $800 per day for labor. On a feature film or longer form project the rate goes down to $400 or so. The van and equipment prices are all additional and listed on my website!
Great video! One question about the c-stand boom arm. Looks like you have an ear going into a lollipop mounting to the base stand, but how are you connecting the c-stand? Thanks in advance. Looking forward to your video on this.
Thank you! Its a pipe clamp bolted to an ear. This one is from Kupo, but American makes one as well that is welded instead of bolted. Google C Boom clamp and a few options should come up. Video is being edited now.
@@cfl4286 Brilliant. Thanks so much!
@@cfl4286 Feel free to just address this in the video if you prefer, but could you support weight with the c-stand fully extended? approx 10ft? Looking at an impact boom and maxes out around 5 feet and is $60. Will either buy that or the c-boom clamp. Thank you again
@@ericdargan yes, it can go full extension. You would just need to counterweight it properly with a shot bag and ratchet strap, and also make sure not put any light on it that’s heavier than a couple pounds (LIte mat, 60 watt LED, etc.). Any heavier you’ll bend it. Are you talking about an aluminum impact boom? I would steer clear of that. For dedicated boom arms you need steel to safely arm a light out over talent. A Menace arm is the only exception, but is made with Schedule 40 speedrail w/ a menace arm hardware, and is supported by ratchet straps to keep it from bending. Also, for any boom you need a combo stand for the base. Definitely not something you want to do off of a C Stand or Baby Stand. Hope this helps!
Canon and Sony can suck it. 😂😂 booo...
