As someone who grew up terminally online, that was the first thing I noticed about Tumblr and Tumblr-influenced social media. This is an early version of "le media literacy" meme. Tumblr in the early 2010s was filled with teenagers who thought they were smart for treating text as subtext. Andnnow the people who grew up in that environment are writing shows and movies where everyone does exactly that.

Speaking on the use of child soldiers in European wars: The last major western war to have a noticeable amount of youth soldiers was WW2. Brutish and American youths of 16-19 could enlist if their guardians signed off for them (that’s how my grandpa joined the marines in 42), German youths were impressed more and more into the service as the war demanded more and more soldiers, by the end of the war there were thousands of youths as young as 13 enlisted to defend Berlin as the red army invaded. On the Soviet side essentially anyone who was old enough to pick up a gun and fight was encouraged to, which is understandable being that for the Soviets this was an eschatological war, the cost of which would be the annihilation of EVERYONE, children included. Most youth soldiers on the eastern front belonged to volunteer and partisan groups and not the official red army, but regardless there were thousands of child soldiers fighting in the eastern front. Every major combatant that lasted throughout the entire war resulted to using child soldiers to SOME extent in WWII. It’s grim but when the stakes are that high it’s kinda hard to say “WTF not cool guys”. I mean some of these armies were fighting an enemy that was actively killing its civilians and children as official policy. They needed as many boots and guns on the ground as realistically possible otherwise EVERYONE would’ve been dead.

I think Matt does a great job of cutting to the fundamental truth is that the degree of conspiratorial intent does not matter in the larger context. The core contradiction, at least from my limited perspective, has always been that empire begets social unrest that begets further outright control of economic, political, and public life. The rapid growth foreign investment (directed towards the economic gain of comprador bourgeoisie) into West Asia in the middle 19th century started a perpetual pattern that persists today because even in the face of increasing domestic unrest, capital has no reason to leave. 9/11, even if you ignore the very real likelihood that US interests allowed and abetted it, is still just a small portion of the price international finance capital is willing to pay for that everflowing stream of wealth. The very violence they have sewn into existence only becoming a further source of enrichment.

My _entire_ question was predicated on the supposition that there is always a black ancillary character and that they have to have some physical or cultural characteristic that is viewed as inherently black.
