Am I Ready for the 1st Padel Tournament of 2025?
Просмотров 6 тыс.14 дней назад
After not personally performing in the championship tiebreak in the last video, I wanted to come back with intensity. Thing is, an injury could hold me back from doing so, and put my 1st Padel Tournament of 2025 in serious jeopardy. Will I even be able to compete? And if I do, can it be at the level I need to perform at? Note: You will see a few clips with my PT in this video. If you are in the...

Awesome self-reflection James 👏 something all athletes should make a regular habit of!
Thanks Sam, appreciate that a lot! Sometimes I think my self reflection can be too harsh, but all I really want to do is highlight where I’m going wrong so I can improve upon it - thanks for the comment 😎
Best video yet! However, you are far too hard on yourself! I know it’s hard I’m exactly the same as you when I’m playing. Lose my head all the time. One wrong smash I’m livid😂 Anyway, your partner… did he give you any encouragement? I have a feeling if I was playing with you, I’d try and boost your morale as often as possible. One lad I play with, I only have to put my arms round him and he’s much more relaxed. Looking forward to the next one! 🎾
Ah legend thank you ☺️….good to know I’m not the only one either 😂 Yeah building up my morale would certainly be a positive thing, as sometimes the tentativeness can come from not wanting to let my partner down. I reckon it’s all deep rooted stuff, and I’m taking some serious steps to try and sort it! Thanks so much for the comment, much appreciated!!
Excellent storytelling! I’m invested in your journey at this point and look forward to your videos dropping. Proper rooting for you lad! Keep going!
Ah amazing man! Thanks so much - massively appreciate this message ☺️
That racket is beautiful! Cheers from Portugal!
Yeah…perhaps the only bit about my game I wouldn’t change 😂
Great video. Whats the shoes youre using?
Thank you and awesome of you to notice the shoes, they are New Balance Padel ones ☺️
Start playing Australian
Ah yeah, 99% of the time I do, only reason I didn’t in this one was because my partner was more comfortable this way as he predominately plays tennis. I’ll be sure to be more assertive on that decision moving forward - thanks for the comment and insight, appreciate it 😎
I’m very surprised you aren’t playing Aussie so on half the serves you’ve got you as a lefty on the left and the right handed on the right, makes you weaker down the middle
Yeah it’s a fair point for sure! I don’t normally play like that but my partner was more comfortable playing the other way due to his experience in tennis. I should have been more assertive with the decision to not do that - definitely won’t make that mistake in future! Thanks so much for the comment and insight 😎
really enjoyed the commentary, and a good angle of the match, love to see more videos
Ah thank you, appreciate that a lot! 😊
Great video mate. Appreciate you and your content as I’m of a similar age and desire to compete so it’s great to see someone else’s journey! If you don’t mind me asking, with graded tournaments, did you play in 5s and 4s first? If so, what sort of Playtomic level would you see in them, or even in this tournament? It would be good to get an idea before jumping into tournaments myself. All the best Fes
That's awesome, great to know! Yeah good question, so I don't believe i've done a grade 5 (yet), but I wouldn't be against it at all. I mainly went in and played grade 3's - in all honesty though, I think the best thing someone can do is actually to do a 5, and see how you get on. From that point, you will know whether you could sit higher than that, or not. Regarding levels, it can fluctuate. Most people wouldn't expect top players in the lower grade tournaments, but it 100% happens for a variety of reasons. Maybe they just want to play more, they are playing with a partner where their level is lower etc. Overall though, it would be fair to anticipate a lower level, the higher the number of the grade, but it's all good experience regardless! My advice - just go for it! Thanks for the comment and question!
Hey mate, I have posted this before, but don't be too hard on yourself. If that lob at 4:27 is 'decent' (basically a centimeter away from the back glass), your perception of perfection must be hard to beat ;). That being said. It looks as if your nerves have an effect on your movement: being more active at the net and bending your knees will probably help you massively. Keep it up!
Hey Mark - YES! You are bang on with the active/knee bend insight, literally had the same thought a few days back. Also bang on with the hard on yourself bit too. I think what I tell myself in my mind really impacts me, reinforces an expectation of performance that is silly to think I can reach at this current point. Thanks so much man, appreciate it!
Most of their points are easy to return if you just use the back glass this is padel not tennis your not a goal keeper take advantage of their high over head shots and use the back glass to counter keep up the good work u still got alot of learning to do
Yeah I agree for sure, think I even reference that very point you made in the video too. Only speaking for myself here, but normally I use the glass a lot, for some reason on this day, my decision making was all over the place. Completely agree with you - thanks for the comment and your observation, much appreciated!
Great video! But u guys flip flop so often between the 2 players and not putting all the pressure of a rally on one. U put 1 under pressure and boom the other gets the ball
Totally agree, and I appreciate your insight! I get told to do that (focus on one) a lot, it just hasn’t sunk in yet - thanks for bringing it up!
Brother you can not play on the left side if you are a lefty, it is a very disavantage for you couple.
Thanks for the comment Alessio! You guys are great for telling me this, I appreciate it…I never normally switch sides at all, but on this occasion I did as my partner was more comfortable with it since he plays tennis more than Padel. But I’m gonna be more assertive with it next time - thanks again 😎
Great realistic stuff, keep up the good work!
Thank you, appreciate that a lot! 😊
Lovely to meet you mate, keep on pushing, sky is the limit 🔥🔥
Legend! Thanks man - right back at you, great to meet you 😎 P.S - Come on you gunners!
Great video, could you share what camera and stand are you using?
Hey Alex - literally just my iPhone, a standard smart phone tripod, and some editing chops (work in progress on that one)
Please, never ever ever ever switch sides with your right handed partner, even if it was his idea (i assume). Be adamant about that being a bad idea, even moreso than maybe him being slightly unaware of where to stand on the odd serve. Rather that than have NO dominant hand in the middle for aggresive viboras or smashes :D
Yeah that’s completely fair and good advice! Totally agree, will be more assertive on this moving forward, thank you! ☺️
Keep going mate!
1000% man! Thanks for your support dude 😎
Captured the game really well, definitely too harsh on yourself. Was a competitive match and sorry again for the stray shot!
Aha I can acknowledge that shot now, no apology needed 😂…you guys played real well! A deserved win for sure! Definitely gonna work on being too hard on myself
nice vid again mate, so hard in the moment to keep your cool. when you find the answer, bottle it and you'll be a millionaire! good luck at the next tournament.
Aha thanks so much!! Hopefully I do find the answer🤞
Really good story-telling James! And yeah the hardest part about padel really is the mental game. We have all been there and continue to be there during some games :D I had a game like that today myself, where padel just didn't click as it usually does. And tournaments really can be strange as it's hard to finding the balance on being aggressive in the right moments, while not making too many mistakes and being relaxed... it seems like you haven't done too many tournaments yet, so don't worry, I think at this point it's just down to getting a few more under your belt!
Ah thank you for taking the time to write this. It’s cool to know you have had similar experiences! Yeah you are right, in the grand scheme of things, I haven’t done loads of tournaments, so the “tournament day” nerves are still somewhat new to me. Appreciate you sharing, thanks ☺️
@@MyPadelJourneyYour experience is very relatable. I played a tournament last week with my regular partner. We were up 4-0 in no time, all thanks to him (they played much to him, for no reason, but he handled it well). Then I remember saying that this score means nothing as our opponents made many unforced errors. We went from 4-0 to 5-2 to 5-9… Next game we were up 8-4. And narrowly won 9-7. Once your mind thinks you are winning, or that “this point is pivotal”, it’s very hard to get out of that mindset. Keep playing and enjoying tournaments, even though they can be heart-wrenching sometimes. Nice vlog also btw.
Thanks for the comment, and you are very right on what you've said! The mind is powerful isn't it - not just in matches. I could be at the shop buying some milk and my mind will tell my that I will mess up my viboras in my next match 😂, it's never-ending with me! Thanks again, appreciate the support!
Great video once again, James! I know it's easier said than done but you've just got to have that mindset that every point is a game within itself! Looking forward to your next tournament vlog brother! 💪Don't be too hard on yourself and remember to enjoy the game above all 🤝
Thanks very much!! Hmm that is an awesome way to look at it, never thought of it from that perspective. I find it hard to not be critical on myself, sometimes I think it’s a positive and a detrimental thing 😂. Appreciate your thoughts and thanks for the kind words too!
Great video, love your comments and editing! Keep it up
Ah thanks so much! Means a lot, thank you! ☺️
Another great video. Dont dwell on the bad, look for the positives. Easy to say i know. When ever i ve played in a tournament, and let the demons creep in things go as expected. But go in with a oh well, sh@# happens lets injoy the day. Things seem to go better. But I am sure you know that already. Great work looking forward to the next installment.
Yeah great advice David, really appreciate it! I just seem to put way too much pressure on myself… I would genuinely love to have the attitude you have mentioned above, and hopefully I can work towards feeling confident and relaxed over time. Thanks so much for the support 😊
A bit of pressure is good. you can't make diamonds without pressure,
Again, great ruddy advice David! Thank you 😎
Hello mate! Do never switch sides again, you give your opponents the opportunity to play i the middle every time. Doesn’t matter if your teammate plays tennis from the start. All good
Yeah fair point, you are right! I should just be more assertive on that moving forward…Thanks for the comment, appreciate it!
Yeah not having a forehand in the middle is going to cost a lot
You don’t have to be Galan to be smart. A lefty NEVER plays on the backhand side. Never.
love it
Thank you ☺️
thanks for another great video, I think you are too tensed to execute the shots you would normally do in training withut hesitation. I think you need to relax ( I know its hard) .. I am in the same boat buddy😂 Keep going, thanks for videos much appreciated! Waiting on new one! Maybe you could do a training session video or so😅
Ah thank you and YES, completely agree, it’s so hard!! We will both get there!! Appreciate the comment on the video and we are on the same page, next video is going to feature a training session with Jake 😎
Hi mate, ive come to padel from tennis and in the ten or so matches ive played executing what you know you can do seems really tricky. It will happen! Enjoying the vids keep up good work👍
Hey Daniel, thanks for the comment…yeah that’s it isn’t it?! I know what I want to do, just can’t execute it when it matters 😂…I’ll get there (hopefully 😬), thanks again!
I noticed that you guys switch side when you serve(australian formation I think) For me it’s just confusing maybe that you help so you know what to do in each situation About the going in your head part breathing is the way to go for me Just breathing slower can get you back in the game Great video!
Thanks for the comment Niko, appreciate it! I don't normally switch sides, however, Marshall predominately plays a lot more tennis than he does Padel so we added the switch in for this match, but yeah otherwise, I totally agree! I like that advice about the breathing, I guess by doing that you are bringing yourself back into the present moment rather than thinking ahead, really cool - thanks again!
@ yes the idea about breathing is right, for me doesn’t really work Sometimes maybe this combined with eating a bite during switching sides slowly could do the trick also Even reading the numbers on your racket You have to think you are not the only one getting stressed so use your one time on the court wisely Most of all enjoy the game Cheers
Awesome advice, thanks for sharing! It definitely is a big thing for me to work on, think I've had a very similar mentality in sports since when I was younger
Love this, my favourite one yet, not just because I was in it ahem ahem. Thanks for the shoutout James and for letting me be a part of the video and your journey, love working with you at the gym, excited to see how far you can go. Some great padel in the video, you played really well mate, some beautiful clean shots in there I was in awe 👏
Ah thanks so much man! 😊 What we do at the gym is absolutely integral to this, so I really appreciate your guidance and support dude, as always 😎
A little bit too stiff. Unlucky
My brother and I also rocking the NB padel shoe 🤩
Awesome! Yes! I'm really big fan of white padel shoes, but there isn't really any out there, then I saw these NB ones, which are practically fully white - thanks for the comment 😎
Great Video! :) I am also 40+ and lefty, training in spain. Please tell your lefty opponent that he never should switch sides. It is a big mistake if a lefty plays left and the righty plays right. I think they switched because of the serve but as you can see there is no forehand in the center then :D big mistake. leftys play always right/forehand except you play just for fun with another lefty of course :D
Awesome! Thanks for the comment and that’s great that you are training in Spain! So many people I know have such positive experiences out there, really cool to hear/see. I shall pass on the feedback to the guys, I believe they switched just so Charles didn’t have to cover more of the court. Hope your training goes well 😎
David's the best to look after those knees. Let me know when you hit the magic age to play in 40+ comps, I'm ready and waiting for a partner!
He is indeed man! Get it in the diary man, next march (2026), I’ll be ready! Let’s do it 😎
Breakers are always tough! Great match 👏🏼 Looking forward to seeing that vibora develop!
Ah so tough! My record with them overall? Not good 😂…thanks dude, I’m looking forward to seeing it develop too!
Fantastic 👏🏼🎬 Look forward to seeing more, hopefully get on court with you soon!
Thanks so much man! 100% let’s get something booked up 😎
Great video and content! how can you play with running shoes? do you have stability? isnt it too dangerous?
Ah thank you! ☺️ Yeah well observed and fair comment on the shoes… I’ve recently got some new ones actually, Padel ones, which are definitely a lot better for sure. For a while, even before the running shoes I was wearing just white standard pair of trainers 😮
@@MyPadelJourney Great! keep the hard work! you have natural talent for padel and very clean strokes!
Really appreciate that, thanks so much!
Amazing chiquitas and volleys! Bellísima!!!
Ah thank you very much 😊

Aha is this a cryptic code? 🙂
that backhand return is something special
Thank you! Would love to hit it consistently 😂
Just found this. I remember you from the padel school clinic! Great video James!
Yes man!! I remember you too dude, thank you and hope you are well 😎
nice chuiqitas! been adding those to my game recently, particularly after feigning a lob. nice vid again!
That’s awesome, yeah they are such an important shot aren’t they…great to know you are adding them into your game! Thank you 😎
What level do you play at described in playtomic or Stratford terms?
I actually haven’t been officially been rated - only possibly played through playtomic 1 or 2 times! Definitely on the agenda to get a rating/level sorted
My hero ❤
A legend is what you are ❤️
💪💪💪 Love the videos mate
Thanks so much man! Appreciate it 😎
Your return at around 2:57 was superb! Love watching the channel and hearing more noise from the game was class. Looking forward to the next one!
Legend!! Thank you! Appreciate the comment a lot 🙂
Greetings from South Africa! Great video. Keep it up! Nice and entertaining!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the comment 🙂

Thanks 🙂
Hi, Which camera did you use, please?
Hey! Thanks for the comment - just my iPhone 😊
Epic content! Keep it up my man.
