A housemate of mine told me the Stoker novel explores the psychosexual aspects more, so the ending probably makes more sense in terms of the relationship between Ellen and Orloc. To me the ending seemed like a cautionary tale on abusive relationships and the de factos that struggle to escape from the pain and fear of their abusers. And that Ellen overcame her abuser by exploiting his weakness. Can't say i've read it either, but by the end, i def felt your similar frustrations on it's contrasting themes, yet this to me is a good enough reason to dig into a good publication of the original source material. Either way Eggers still has a good eye for historical research, and whilst I'm not much of an historian, I had a gut feeling that Orloc's moustache had to have been something of a nod to Vlad the Impaler since Stoker was on another level of personal research much like Eggers or even Scorsese that's super aspiring.

Where can I find the film?

This guy is SO underrated

The imperfections in the film's animation remind me of old Aardman films like Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers and Chicken Run. The smudges and finger prints on the models make those movies more lively and personal, and it enhances the narrative connection they offer beyond being material it looks like we can reach through the screen and feel. Memoir of a Snail is no different in that since the animators make their mark on the film, literally and figuratively, which I like a lot. Spoilers: As for the rest of the film, it was darker than I anticipated. They go all out with the despair Grace and co feel and endure. The bigger she spirals into anguish, pardon the pun, the more I'm wondering how she was going to escape her depressive state. The snail poison bit almost answered that question, but thank god she had Pinky in her life, and her giving Grace advice on how to move forward in times of great stress was nice. Her retreating into herself after her hardships made things worse for her health, but I liked how that is remedied with learning to taking in the little moments as much as she can in order to keep moving forward, and break out of the shell she made for herself. The twist with Gilbert being alive in the end caught me off guard, but I'm glad he made it back to Grace. It was a big relief for both of them after the hellish lives they've lived. The humor was pretty bonkers too; some of the violence and sex jokes came out of left field and gave me a good chuckle here and there, and uplifted me from its bleaker parts. The soundtrack is wonderful as well. Orchestral melancholic songs are always a plus for me as it always puts me in a serene mood for some reason I can't describe. Whenever I hear something like it, I have a compulsion to reflect and ponder on things in a somber mood, similar to what Grace and Gilbert do with their letters to each other. I personally like Flow more, but I agree Memoir of a Snail is a magnificent movie. I hope films like these get more attention in the future; the animation scene would benefit from some variety. it really isnt though? i feel like the discussion around this movie people make it out to be on the same level as Madame Web or the Star Wars sequels. its painfully average more than anything

The Wild Robot was the first film in seven years to make me cry. I thought it was truly excellent, and might just be my favorite movie of 2024.

7:35 i really liked the lie/secret reveal in this too the fact that there was no buildup, just bullies dropping it like vicious gossip, fit into the movie's themes of nature's brutality perfectly. and i just love how it makes their reconciliation more natural and more impactful

Personally I'm not a big fan of 2, and that's why I haven''t seen 3... I feel like in the 2nd film they babied the protagonists... Almost like the protagonists was playing a video game on easy mode, while everyone else was playing on nightmare mode. It felt like just another traditional final girl movie... While the original redefined the final girl concept.

yeah, i didn't expect to enjoy it as much as i did. i went in being like, "okay, this'll just be some gore porn," but it was really fun. the opening scene was brilliant, but i can see why some people would think it was too much. dead kids are always hard to deal with lol.

I heard this was way more gore than the previous ones, but I honestly didn't find it too much more than the ones before. I expected more gore tbh, but the movie is still amazing
