Totally agree john was so underrated I started following him with Joni then I tracked him intently got to see l a express live after Tom scot left and John had the leadership smaller venue in. Chicago met his tech and missed chatting with John by moments long story I need to listen to this shortly this guy produced and was on so many hit records actually I followed him so closely to this day when I hear a record from that day I can tell if it's john his feel on a record and he had his patterned licks just so good and he dated Joni Mitchell and was so cool l a cool rip john john his cartage guy in the studios out there chimes in on these posts hope he does here ty
he also played drums on the Hawaii 5 0 tv series they would schedule the sessions around his schedule that just rarely happens out there john john was that good

There is a clip on RUclips where Jeff claims that "he is not a good reader, doesn't do drum solos and is really just a timekeeper". Well it's possible I suppose but I would add that he is/was one of the best drummers on the Planet !!! RIP a Master.

That 70’s fusion tom sound by Ken Scott. I’m gonna try to figure out what makes it tick. I saw some footage of Ken and Billy recording sample for a drum library, and the toms had that same sound. Ken had large diaphragm condenser mics on the toms. I think that’s a big part of the sound. Much more top end close up. Add a good amount of saturation to those puppies so you get more room in the close sounds. That’s at least what I’m thinking.

He’s a great drummer. His drumming on Michael Franks album Sleeping Gypsy is beautiful. Even I would say pretty which not usually a drum description. You either like Michaels voice or you don’t. But the music and drums are great. Great musicians all around.

Even with my eyes closed and no further information I easily could guess that this is BC with Stratus. Pure groove, sound and craftmanship.
Music is basically about ears and skin. Looking at music is more for people on LSD enjoying music.
Pretty easy. One listen. He had a groove.

In some interviews Jeff said 'he admires Steve Gadd". This intro explains why Jeff said.that,
I realized this when I heard Tom Scott - Street Beat (1979). It's Porcaro in all tracks but before reading the credits, I thought it was Gadd! He perfectly emulated all the ''Gaddisms'' in his playing.
Besides the sheer beauty of his synchronization, it's also marvelous to consider that Billy is a lefty playing on a right-hand kit, much like Lenny White does too!
Two of my favorites Billy Cobham and Lenny White. And oh yeah let's not forget the Tom's running right to left. 🤪

Thanks so much for this! It's amazing to hear this isolated version. I've been listening to the track now for fifty years, but this is the first time I've had the pleasure of hearing just the percussion. He is incomparable--I'd figured that out by the time I was thirteen, ha ha. He also has a completely unique and recognizable sound and manner: the dynamics, combined with the dazzling technique. Absolutely go for broke brilliant. I'm such a big fan of his that the other day my girlfriend, listening to me typing on my computer, said: "Yaknow, ya can tell you're a Billy Cobham fan just by listening to you type! Ha ha!" Thanks again--what a treat! The entire architectonics emerge here, also the organic nature of the routine and how it is of a piece with the solo: it all has Billy's peerless percussive signature. Brilliant!
