The Duke is an acquired taste for sure. If you look at some of the pro QBs you’ll see they don’t even use the laces, which tells me that with a professional break-in process your fingers will sink into the ball enough that the laces aren’t even necessary to throw the ball. Which ball are you going to go with instead/next?

@ yeah I just found out about high school / college size vs pro size and that even tho they’re both official size, the duke is definitely bigger than a gst. I ordered a gst omega and I’m gonna try that out. Of course Im gonna do the shaving cream and mud and all the good stuff

It’s definitely a good ball. I’d say, for me and my needs, my faves are the Dime, the Omega, or the Dual Threat. The GST gets honorable mention.

Haha, man the break in process is a long one. And it involves playing with the ball too! My Vapor Elite was/is a little tough to break in but give it time. Assuming you are brushing it a little every day with the Wilson brush (or equivalent) just keep playing with it and it’ll break in. Leather balls take time, but they’re definitely worth it. And tell your buddies to quit whining!

You’re right on all counts. All very good balls, though the Dime is my fave Big Game ball for sure.

It’s not dye they’re taking out. I spoke with Wilson directly about that break in process, and the stuff that’s actually being taken out is dye and tack. It might make the leather look “broken in”, but it’s just cosmetic and - even though it’s faster - you’ll end up adding back the tack and stickiness, and drying the leather out along the way.

Tack spray is pretty wild honestly, it’s incredibly sticky. Problem is, at least I find sometimes, that it doesn’t cooperate with sweaty hands. Your mileage may vary!

Habitually 😂. I’d say I grab a ball or two most days while I’m doing something else and give it a light brush for 10-15 minutes.

I actually bought and returned one from Amazon a few months ago, I think it was the second version. Leather felt nice, laces were terrible.

@CBPJoey thank you! I was wondering because I saw some reviews that said the leather felt really nice. So I was curious how it stacks up with other top balls. I hadn't heard about the rough laces, so I appreciate that thank you!

I do t own the Championship ball but I’ve held it a few times - I don’t love the laces, they’re pretty high.

I had a look at the website but they don’t really look like they’re game-quality balls like the ones I’ve been looking at. If they send one over though, I’d give it an honest look for sure!

Na they are made for playing. Highest quality leather hand made and shows up soft and broken in. I dont have any affiliation but its a ball you pass down to your kid.​@CBPJoey

Everything I’ve bought from Wilson, except that one Omega, has been great. BG USA definitely has a quality product though, I went through a game with the Dime over the weekend and it was outstanding

They’re not only game legal but actually used in some NCAA and high school programs in the US already! Hope that helps!

Also I will say its better to condition when the ball is at a lower PSI, it might seem a bit counter intuitive but leather absorbs better at around 7-8PSI, thats what a lot of pro EQ managers do

Definitely agree. The balls I’ve done way less with have always tuned out to feel better both throwing and catching.

Appreciate the kind words! I really should get a CFL ball and maybe also one of those Nike tournament balls to look at. FYI too, the Duke I’m breaking in feels pretty good after a few brushing sessions and some conditioner, even for the #smallhandsgang.

I’ve never tried the Big Game stuff (Mojo I think, right?) but the Wilson stuff is very good. I’m not 100% sure but if you told me they put something in the conditioner to add to the tack/stickiness of the ball, I’d believe it. It’s really solid.

Chips are aight. Hard to really do much about that. If you have a bladder break maybe they’ll replace or refund it for ya! Worth a try!

Yo! Are you using the whole wet rag/shaving cream technique? If so, try just brushing instead and see how you do - it keeps the wax/tack of the leather and gives it a nice feel once it’s softened up.

I should grab a CFL ball, definitely will eventually!

I don’t think so, only because on their website’s comment section there are others who also received a very high quality ball. Who knows, could have just been some leather treating issues or something.
