    I’d say the most efficient way to use your mono mics is to pan them far left and far right on the superior drummer mixer, and then you can double up on output channels. This ensures you don’t run out of output channels on superior drummers mixer when you have all your mono mics on their own mono channels and the stereo mics on stereo channels, when the maximum amount of drums is being used. It also cuts out the need for any mono summing plugins being used in your ableton channel strips.

      Not sure if you’re referring to superior Drummer mixer cause that you have to press the tab Mixer in the program. I dig your approach. However almost all of what you speak of is subjective. And realistically in a mix, cymbals don't need to be very loud. Thanks for doing this, dude. Do you know of any way to route to your daw whilst preserving any bus processing? For example, say the master bus on SD3 has a compressor affecting everything sent to it. If you route your kick to output 1 in your DAW as shown here, all the compressor on the master bus be bypassed? If there a way to send the kick signal *post* bus processing, without also sending everything else going through the master bus?

    • @willytonezone
      @willytonezone 5 месяцев назад

      @@samsonlovesyou Thanks for watching and commenting!! So on sd3 whenever you route them out it creates output channels for each separate output you make. So what you can do is copy over the processing to those output channels that are created. OR You can make a bus for the kick or whatever part of the drum kit and set the output to that bus and process that way and then send it out its own output. Hope this makes sense!

    • @samsonlovesyou
      @samsonlovesyou 5 месяцев назад

      @willytonezone Thanks man, I'll give this a shot. It's a same you can't keep the compression on the master bus to keep the cohesion off all the drums. Suppose that can be done in the DAW, but I love some of the preset kits and didn't want to mess with them too much!

But it’s all good I’ve been working with other people on things. As for it sounding, it honestly sounded kind of decent. The drums were punchy and had a vibe that glued with the rest of the song. I did use some slate trigger samples specifically like a black beauty snare sample to beef up the snare. One more thing you can do , is send from the superior drummer multi , independent pans for the overheads for example , to make it more realistic and have two faders because you might wanna mix for example a more “snare weight channel” in a different way , or even just lower it . Another way to do this is the plugin ISOL8 , it’s free , but that’s putting another plugin to your chain and you need also to duplicate the channel (one instance of the plugin in each stereo track, choose left in one track on ISOL8 choose right on the other one ). It’s so easier to send independent pans though for the OH or anything :)

    Man this is awesome, pretty sure this is the only vid explaining this... because I was wondering how I'm going to mix the drums with the rest of the tracks (guitar, bass, vox etc.), and if I was going to have to mix them separately (somehow) directly in SD3. But now I don't have to! However, I do have one question for ya... what if I built the entire drum track right in SD3? I have all the "grooves" lined up exactly for the song I wrote at the bottom of SD3... should I just consolidate all the the grooves into one single "take" then drag it into Ableton? or will it be automatically routed into each individual drum/cymbal tracks I created once I hit record?

    • @willytonezone
      @willytonezone 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for commenting! Glad I can help you out. As for your question I believe it will work either way. I personally like to have the midi file (groove consolidated) out in an Ableton MIDI track instead of in SD3 just because I prefer to work that way. I like having all the data out of the plug in if that makes sense. Let me know if that works for you.

      @@willytonezone I totally agree man. I commented while I was still at work, and now I’m at home and JUST opened Ableton, rewatched your vid and 100% it’s much better to have the audio file right in Ableton. I think though, that I/whoever should have the song structure 100% before doing this otherwise making changes to the drum parts will become a PAIN. I agree. Like a few months ago I had no idea how to do it just by looking at it. So GGD should consider us people who don’t just immediately know how to work it. It’s a very good kit so technically you won’t need anything else but the superior Drummer 3 and ezx packs are really fun different sounds if you want something a little more traditional and or creative.

    Great video . One thing . The buses are not required :) just create the same audio tracks record enabled and route the SD output buses to each corresponding channel . Bonus tip : any type of analog summing or compression etc you wanna do and get it printed, you do it in the SD3 multitrack busses in Logic Pro x so they are printed to the tracks you’re recording at ! Happy mixing !

      @@willytonezone Also if you want to print mono tracks like for example kick, sd, toms seperately etc, pan them to the left on the SD Plugin. Then, on the triggered audio channels make them mono to the ones you want and voila ! Make sure you adjust the printing volume from the SD faders IN your daw. So , gain stage in 2 stages, One is on the SD busses hitting -18dbfs (if using analog emulations especially), in order to get that tone , and then add a level meter on each of the recording enabled audio tracks and compensate from the SD Busses faders on your daw! Aiming normally at around -12dp peak. Happy mixing bro!

      I'm having trouble understanding the first part. Where do I go to specifically route the SD output bus? In the SD3 mixer it only gives the outputs as shown in the video (output 1-2, 3-4, etc) and I can't seem to find where to route the individual track from within Logic to a normal audio track. What am I missing?

    The need to route every drum mic as stereo is extremely wasteful of resources and quickly exhausts the 16 stereo outputs of a standard sized kit with 3 rack toms and 2 floor toms. I really wish there was an easy button in the SD3 mixer to route all mics as mono before being bussed to the multi-channel stereo pairs to the driver so that I can easily just bus them as individual mics in Logic. I haven't found a video yet that describes how to do this. Yes, this compromises the ability to use bleed, pans, and presets within SD3, but for those of us who solely purchased SD3 for the samples and perhaps eKit tracking and want to do ALL our production work within Logic, it seems a reasonable ask of Toontrack. If anyone has a link that can show me how to do this, please let me know.

    • @willytonezone
      @willytonezone 7 месяцев назад

      It’s a little bit brutal yes but what you can do is if you use all the outputs. You can copy the same drum kit over to another track and get the rest of the outputs out of the second drum kit. If that makes sense? Unfortunately only protools and cubase have the functionality where you can mono the signals and everything makes sense. But logic and Ableton you have to do it the stereo way.

  • @hammincheese1310
    @hammincheese1310 7 месяцев назад

    I don't think it's necessary to first route all the SD3 multi-channel inputs to busses before sending those to audio tracks. You can simply set the audio track inputs to the multichannel inputs directly, no? I have my setup the same as you do here now, but I'm thinking of stripping out the bus layer. Thoughts?

    • @willytonezone
      @willytonezone 7 месяцев назад

      If you figure out that way I would love to know but unfortunately to get it printed to audio, this is the only way I know.

    • @hammincheese1310

      @willytonezone OK, I could have swore I saw an option to directly connect the SD3 inputs to audio tracks the other day, but I'm not seeing them now. You're right. You need the bus layer. Just doesn't make sense. If I can route a physical input from my Scarlett directly to an audio track, why not a virtual SD3 one?

    Great video! Many thanks! Can one group one of these audio tracks with a subgroup track from drum rack? e.g Group Superior Drummer Kick - (Audio Multi Out) with C1 (Kick Sample) from Drum Rack and make both of them one group? I don't want to add the sample to Superior Drummer and process/route it from there but be able to use SD3 and Drum Rack and combine the instruments, SD Kick and Drum Rack Kick Sample, SD Snare and Drum Rack Snare Sample...so on... and have all of them be grouped as Kick, Snare, Toms......I hope this makes sense. Thank you! :)

    • @willytonezone

      Yes most definitely this is possible. You would simply route out your drum rack and then move that track so it’s under your superior Drummer track and group them together so they can both be processed at the same time within Ableton. If that’s what you were asking?
