I use the topbar on the dials so I can see what’s going on while testing (and they are not visible at the SD Plus). I also wish topbar is switched off by default when importing a full export
Top-bar off by default is a GitHub request for sure!
Is there any way to add a pause between presets on the trace or loop? - would like to hold position for a while before moving to next position. I've done it on trace by doubling up the presets but that limits you to only two positions instead of 5
@@rohandadswell8687 I would add multiple 2-step custom trace Actions (that don’t loop/repeat) to the one button and add delays between the actions. If you want the circuit to loop, add a force-pressed button press at the end of the sequence to repeat
@@davidjoshuaford Cheers, thanks for that
this was easy to follow. finally the puzzle came together in my head
Thanks for the feedback and glad you found it helpful!
Hey David, thanks for all your work on this and sharing the updates in such detail. I bought 3.1 and would like to consider upgrading but can't find a way to 'UPGRADE' on your site - including when I'm logged in to my account. These updates would fix a few things for us so keen to explore it - can you provide some guidance?
Hey Jason! Shoot me an email and I'll get your account upgrade sorted out!
Love it, I now have a lamp at my desk that lets my colleagues know I am in a Teams meeting, I went a bit crazy and it changes colours when I am muted or raising my hand Love your content keep it up 😃
Thanks! A good use for it!
I was planning to do the same. What bulb did you use that allows companion control of the colors?
Can the remote multiview be switched only by using a wireless device like the Teradek? Also, can the ATEM Extreme be remotely controlled from anywhere in the world rather than in a local area network?
Recent BMD firmware updates enable multiview over the USBC webcam input which is useful for viewing multicam on a laptop rather than an additional monitor. You can control your ATEM anywhere in the world via VPN - so you'd need to set up that first. I like Ubiquiti Unifi because the Teleport VPN is very easy to set up.
@@davidjoshuaford the following has been sent via discord DM but not sure if ur active there much or prefer email as RUclips replies can crash after so many replies. Anyhow My follow-up question was whether the likes of a VPN such as Ubiquiti Unifi is just the same as Chrome Remote Desktop, TeamViewer or AnyDesk? I've heard of Unifi before but just thought they were to do with routers and networking but not VPN. When I think of VPN I think of Nord or SurfShark VPN and never thought they had any connection with something like TeamViewer...
Hello! What about the fan noise? Is it acceptable in an open studio environment?
Yes - mine is only a few feet from the microphone in this video
15 minutes in i learned im not the only one who struggles with production complexities
I hope that they will come out with optical zoom cameras.
That would be a great achievement for a camera this size
Incredible profiles. priced high, but I mean, you deserve it. Did they ever go on sale Like Black Friday? in a production environment, the cost is absolutely warranted, but for personal home users who just want to mess around a little less would help I just have a 1 me 4k As well as a dji Ronan controlled by. apcr
Hey there, glad you found them useful! Don't have exact plans for Black Friday sales yet but I have run them in previous years. Also you can get 10% off as a newsletter subscriber at any time davidjoshuaford.com/join
Do you know- will the camera recall manual settings for white balance and exposure between uses?
yes, i power down my studio and the settings remain when powered up again. the App/OSC recaall presets are different to the VISCA recall presets though.
I cant believe i got this while is still free! I guess this is whats called being a subscriber :D Thank you ALOT! Great timing btw!
Enjoy!
Would love to see a DJI gimbal control video
Thanks for the feedback - I'll consider if I can do something with my RS2 Pro
Have you ever worked with a Sony FR7?
I haven't, but it looks amazing! Wish Canon would make something like that, especially with the new lower cost zoom lenses like the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z
Very good comments. Still would like to know if it will track focus through a teleprompter?
exactly the reasons i dismissed this one could be interesting to go the "smartphone-route" and just give us 3 Sensor-Lens-Combos + some digital zoom to keep the aperture fast
I assume you're talking about the lack of optical zoom? Good point about the fast aputure given that's always a trade off with zoom. The low light on the Tail Air is pretty good.
@@davidjoshuaford exactly. I've got "the 2nd gen webcam verison" (is it called tiny?) To me the sharpening, saturation and colors are borderline acceptable/useable - until you zoom in to much. But looking back, these guys are developing fast. Got no doubt they will listen and resolve the last few issues for the next gen. Was very close to order the three cam set... you exactly pointed out the relevant "optimization points" imo and the awesome pros it has as well. Thank you for keeping us informed
Did you find a VISCA command that would start/stop recording to the Tail Air’s onboard SD?
It's a good question - I didn't look for it as I use these cameras for streaming rather than ISO recording but I can imagine that would be useful to people. It's not on their VISCA spreadsheet (www.obsbot.com/explore/obsbot-tail-air/visca-over-ip) but you could email their tech support and request it to be added. You could however use OSC commands direct to the camera or via the Center App as that is supported: www.obsbot.com/explore/obsbot-center/osc
Really helpful section on Visca commands - thank you
Thanks for the feedback, glad you found it useful!
I didn't know Tom Brady was so interested in cameras!
I have observed that the fan runs constantly on the CR-N300 when in standby mode with POE. Do you think this will cause and early failure of the fan? I wish it would go off after it has cooled down.
I’ll take a guess that the fan remaining on long term will be ok, but it would be good to have the option for auto off when on standby. Perhaps something you could request as a firmware update
Isn't USB C symmetrical, so one may plug it in either way up?
It's meant to be, but some cables only work one way, so if it's not working, try flipping it 180
Hi David, I'm sure I'll be buying your config package for N700 cams at some point for a couple clients. Until then, I'm trying to play with the available controls thru the native companion app. If you can help me out, I'm curious how to set up buttons to choose which camera I can control. I can only seem to add another instance of Canon and have a totally seperate page with similar buttons for each camera, not 'now i'm controlling camera 1, now 2' buttons. Any tips you can share? Thank you!! Good stuff sir.
You'll need one module per camera so that you can connect with separate IP addresses, and then once you've built your first page you can mostly copy it to the new modules.
@@davidjoshuaford So you basically need a different page for each camera, buttons for up/down/left/right/etc can't be shared among multiple cams by selecting a camera button... gotcha. Thank you!!
I watched the video well. I hope Canon N500/300/ZOOM in/out will be faster. I have a question. A question about the audio player If you only use the Streamdeck program without using Companion, Streamdeck's soundboard is the best for audio playback. Companion is a bit complicated to use. So, other than the VLC player used in Companion, Is there no simpler player? VLC has the disadvantage of only playing one MP3. (Yes, it is impossible to add applause and depth while using BGM) Qlab is the Mac version, Thank you.
Fade in USK, or alternative: use Flying Key. Set A with a macro in atem software control - position X, Y and Size as desired. Run USK to infinity. Action Run to A in Companion will bring USK on screen with an animation (could be from large to small for example)
Thx David - realy helpful...
Glad it was helpful!

Hello I am using CANON CR-N300 / CR-N500 as a Companion. I recently upgraded the firmware and the speed control for ZOOM In / ZOOM OUT in Companion is not working. It zooms in/out very slowly. I would appreciate it if you could improve it. For reference, when I asked CANON, they said that the CR-N300 & N500 firmware cannot be updated to the previous version. I tried to update the firmware to the previous version, but it didn't work. ㅠㅠ Latest version V150 / Previous version V140 For reference, the latest version only has the basic function of autotracking, which is inconvenient. ㅎㅎ (Full version is $1,200) Presets and other functions work normally. Thank you. Companion 3.3.1 /canon v1.5.0 /CR-N300/ CR-N500

What kind of procedures and documentation do you use for OS and Software updates? Are certain software dependencies like Elgato Stream Deck and Bit Focus Companion upgrade procedures different than mere updates? Any Back up procedures? Or can you point me to somebody who does this?
For the Stream Deck hardware, I just update via Elgato's native software. Then for Companion, export a back up of your configuration, then just boot up the new version. There's not usually a stream deck hardware update that makes it incompatible with Companion, but if there is then it's usually updated by the Companion team within two weeks.
Downloading your stream now for offline viewing later. Thanks

Have you looked at Canon XF605? It's basically the CR-N700 in a camcorder body so it has lots of function buttons/switches when you operate manually and network control when you operate remotely. Bonus is that it also works with the Canon Multi Camera iPhone app, which does not support Canon's PTZs. The c400's visuals will blow the XF605 out of the water, but I personally think the XF605 is better for live b/c it's a lot more flexible. Cheaper, too--I've seen them used for less than $4000 on B&H. I love mine.
I had a Sony TRV900 back in 02, and used a Z1 in 08 on some productions, but I've always been in the "detachable-lens" realm for production work since the 5DmkII days... These days it's a mix of C300's/C200s for live. You're right that camcorders are certainly a lot cheaper/ more for your money for live production, particularly given the inbuilt zoom range. But I've just personally invested a lot more in cinema cameras/lenses for production work that I carry over into live settings, and the PTZs are an incredible return on investment with reduced labor/crew. If I get the c400 I'll probably need to add a 24-105 2.8 for live/event work... (or 17-120 😅) and even then it won't have the full zoom range of a camcorder.
@@davidjoshuaford Definitely tradeoffs with camcorders vs. cine cameras! Looking forward to you getting a c400 + expensive glass (or REALLY expensive glass 😂) one of these days. BTW, thanks for your videos and streams! Your chennel's awesome.
im really enjoying the network attached storage option that the update added. it just seems to work except some computers ask for login info when I go to open the drive
I’ll have to experiment when I’m next in the studio
You were using the modify custom variable function on this video. I don’t see that action in companion 3. Any solutions?
Good question - they've changed it now to "internal: Custom Variable: set with expression". Choose the variable you want to change, and then if you want to modify that same variable, add that same variable back into the "Expression" field and then modify it.. i.e. "$(internal:custom_value) + 1" would add 1 to the a variable called "value"
Any concerns with reliability? All the reviews I read on this are mixed and many people say it suddenly stops working unpredictably? Thanks!
I wouldn't buy it again... cost me an additional $180 to have it repaired. Tech said there's a design flaw that makes it easy to blow a circuit if unplugging a phantom powered mic. Since the repair it has been working ok.
@@davidjoshuaford thanks for the answer. It’s good to know that at least they have pinpointed the flaw.
In that case do they suggest turning phantom power off on that line before unplugging to avoid that issue?
I thinkso, but in a fast paced production environment, and a hybrid photo/video workflow it’s easy to miss that
@@davidjoshuaford Thank you!
@Orbital, please check your Hyperdeck settings
In the conditional button with Trigger Rotate Right, I set Relative Delays to ON - perhaps the delay of 2 ms is sufficient even with Relative Delays OFF. Thanks for referring to me 😀, Nico Wasmus
I really enjoyed your video and have purchased your Bitfocus Companion ATEM Mini Pro ISO switcher Controls. I’m building a version of this RIG and have a question. I don’t know if you’re still responding to this old video but when you talk about the travel router at 6:21, you set up your travel router so it does not reassign IP addresses of your devices when using clients internet WiFi on your laptop. Maybe you, or someone who sees this question can point me to video are link that explains how this is done?
Hey! Glad you found it helpful. I have a livestream about that router in my feed, and I’ll do some more livestreams on the GL.iNet routers in the upcoming weeks/months. It’s essentially the same as any other router, and you’re connecting internet via the WAN port, just that these travel ones are very portable and have great features.
@@davidjoshuaford Wow that was fast! Thank you so much for your response. I’m watching your GL.iNet Slate AX Wifi6 Stream and I think I can set the travel router up. It looks like I will need to give each device a Static IP address with same subnet mask. I will let you know if I get everything configured. Thanks again
@@Casuallz You're welcome - the GL.iNet routers by default run on 192.168.8.1, so you'd set your ATEM and other devices to static addresses within that range 192.168.8.xxx
