Sheep Show Tip to Switching Sides
Switching sides in sheep showmanship is a show process that is only done in some areas. Before you go to deep into switching sides or manuevering around your animal, know if that is a show process done in your area. In California switching sides and manuevering around your animal is a big part of showmanship and demonstrates your ability to move around and handle your animal perfectly.
To switch sides well and smooth, you need to begin your move once the judge switches sides on your animal and move smooth, calm, and swiftly to the other side. In order to get to the other side quickly you want to take your very first step with your inside leg, which will be the leg closest to your animal. ...

      I could. I am considering making a sheep show course. I am actually looking for people to interview for market research on the topic. Would you be interested in being interviewed (20 minutes) with questions on what would be needed to be included in 'everything you need to start showing sheep'?

      It all depends on where you are. Usually, Yes, as long as they have some wool growth. If not they need blankets, and if they look cold maybe they need to be paired up with another lamb to keep each other warm. Watch for humped backs and shivering. Lambs can usually handle the cold well if they have wool or blankets on.

      I clip them with a 'surgical' blade for show. If I'm just cutting them short you can use a 'fine' blade or 'cover coat'

    Do the goats even jump the fencing? Or is that not really a problem for you? I’m trying to figure out how high fencing should be. Also do you ever worry about predators or is that not a problem?

    • @taraschnetz2652
      @taraschnetz2652 11 месяцев назад

      Yes, goats will jump. We have that problem wherever things are too low. The 5 foot fence is a really good height for them. Predators are also a problem but all depends on where you are. Find neighbors with animals and ask them. We have bears and mountain lions. We have a guardian dog for any livestock that are not close to the house. We have also done lots of electric fencing. Our sheep and goats are in an inner part of our property where our dogs run free outside their area so we don't have issues with our show animals. Our breeding animals we need much more procosion. All depends on your area.

    • @taraschnetz2652
      @taraschnetz2652 2 года назад

      You will want to go back a few steps. Spend a week, once or twice a day or more, 5 minutes each. Spend that time doing nothing but being in the pen, brushing, scratching and merging friends. When he is comfortable with you, start turning him around and testing your cues in that tight small area. When he is ready, you can bring him out into a slightly larger contained area, testing your cues and lots of breaks, scratching and brushing. You need trust, patience, you need a small space, and you need to spend tons of time.

    How old are your goats when you like to halter break them?

    • @taraschnetz2652
      @taraschnetz2652 3 года назад

      We like to begin halter training early. So weaning or a little before is a good time to begin. Before that, as long as they are on the mother, the best training is holding their head with your hands and stroking them. Physical touch feels much safer to your lambs than a halter does. Always try to begin with your hands on their face and holding them that way rather then going directly to pulling on a halter. You will discover when a lamb is going crazy at a sale or pick up date, (usually the first time many lambs have had on a halter), all you have to do is to change your hold to hands on the face, for them to calm down sigificantly.
